HCL 10.4.5/Desktops
|
This is a hardware compatibility list for desktop computers. We want to keep it as accurate as possible, but please, do not entirely rely on this list when buying a desktop. Don't forget to add how you got OSx86 running on your x86 desktop computer, and to use proper English. Please see the discussion page for proper instructions on how to input your system specs. Also, please contribute to the HCL 10.4.5 page, which should list a more granular view of compatibility. If your computer isn't listed, you should try it if you have a SSE2 or higher processor. Kernels are available for most configured machines
- ONLY add hardware that you have TESTED. Don't add hardware just because you think it might work.
- Please add hardware into tables.
- This is for 10.4.5 builds only.
Please list your computers in alphabetical order by manufacturer (Asus, Acer, Dell, HP, etc)
For how to edit the Wiki, please see this thread. Thank you!
See the x86 software page for programs you can run without Rosetta.

Hardware: P4 Northwood (non-SSE3) 2.8GHz, chipset Intel 865, 3Gb RAM, nVidia 6600GT, Ethernet Intel Pro/1000 CT Network Adapter, AC97 on board, _NEC DVD+/-RW ND-4450. Creative Labs SB Live with digital Output non-working for now, dito for the WinTV TV Card (BT8x8).
Comments: Installation process: OK. Ethernet and sound (onboard) from first boot. DVD burner: Burning enabled with patchburn.
I'm testing iTV 0.4 for Intel with my TV Card but couldn't get it running so far. It probably not runs on my machine because there is no nVidia driver and in Vesa mode there is no overlay etc. which i think is needed for iTV to run. And i won't buy a x300 to test :)

Notes: There is a random bug that occurs on only a few occasions: each time you start playing something through the sound card it plays garbage for 3 seconds then all goes well. On those occasions the clock also ticks at half the speed. cold boot is the only solution. apart from that, everything works OK.

Other: Firewire via Sound Blaster Audigy
Notes: 10.4.5 DVD installs flawlessly into beautiful QE/CI enabled environment (1680x1050!) Had to use 10.4.3 AppleHDA.kext to enable audio and add vendor ID for Ethernet to work. Now I can wait for Apple to release their new towers in comfort.
Update: audio seems to boot up into silence unless Extensions.kextcache is removed during the previous boot. I made an rc.d script to remove it after boot or on reboot. Otherwise the box is 100% perfect.

Installed 10.4.3, 10.4.4, 10.4.5 on this machine with no problems. 10.4.5 installed both with pre-patched myz DVD and by update via Maxxuss routine. AC97 Audio has both input and output. Go to the Audio/MIDI setup in Utilities, set the output as 6 channel. To get sound out from green (usual) plug, use the speaker configuration, set speakers to channel 3 and 6. Channel 1 and 2 will come out the black plug. Audio input working. DVD-R and CD-R working fine, works with Titanium. Firewire on Creative Audigy card working. USB working DVD player working. iLife working. All software (lots tried) working so far. Moderate mouse tearing with the ATI 9800 graphics card, fixed somewhat with Mouseposse. -- Also bootable from USB drive. No graphics acceleration but overall still fast.
Audio works if you plug the audio jack into the black slot, you might also want to use the 10.4.3 AppleAC97Audio.kext if your volume control is messed up.
No ethernet.
[edit] Dell Optiplex 170L
10.4.4 Native DVD install upgraded to 10.4.5 from Patch and Maxxuss Instructions.
Chipset: Intel 845
Video: Integrated 845G/GL - Works in Vesa3 1280x1024x32 - Set Video Buffer to 8M in BIOS - No AGP Slot :(
Ethernet: Intel 10/100 LOM Works
Audio: Intel ICH5 (Soundmax) - Works w/ AppleAC97Audio - Switch Speaker Output to 3,4 in Audio MIDI Setup Utility
NO AUDIO .
I GOT THE AUDIO TO WORK
I used appleac97 audio driver. (appleac97audio.kext) I used kext helper b7 to install the kext. This makes it much easier.
Once installed go to midi audio settings and configure left and right channels to be channel 3 and channel 4. Thats all. It took me days to figure this out. Hope it helps others.

Intel Pentium 4 Prescott, 1gb RAM
Patched 10.4.4/5 amd-intel sse2-3 dvd.
All is working except I have an nVidia GX AGP card.
The Macvidia driver solved this
very impressive
[edit] Dell Optiplex GX280
Maxxus Patched 10.4.5 install DVD
Install from scratch, audio and QE worked out of the box.
P4 3GHz is recognised as a 3.6GHz
Network not working because I haven't tried yet.
Using IDE HDD instead of the SATA but the SATA drive still appears on my desktop (Only because I don't want to wipe the SATA).
Update: Can't get Broadcom 1677 working. Installed Realtek 8139 which works out of the box.
Update: SATA works Fine, audio didn't work out of the box for me but I got it working. No onboard network for me either. Installed a 3 euro realtek, works like a charm!
Base Specs
Intel Celeron 2.4gHz
256MB Memory
40GB Maxtor IDE Hard Drive
Intel Integrated Graphics
Realtek Integrated Audio
Broadcom LAN Controller
Changed Specs
Added 512MB Memory = 640MB Total
Added NVidia GeForce2 MX400 PCI Card
Notes
Installed Mac OS X 10.4.5 using Myzar pre-patched DVD
Integrated Graphics did not work (greyscale 1-bit screen)
Installed NVidia GeForce2 MX400 PCI Card - NO Core Image or Quartz Extreme - Viewable but stuck at 1024x768x32@75
Installed MacVidia 1.0.8 Driver - Still NO Core Image or Quartz Extreme but able to switch resolutions - Supports up to 1400x1050 - Prefer using 1152x864 for viewing
EDIT: After rebooting, I was getting "Out of Range" Error on my monitor. Searched MacVidia Forums and downloaded CSCREEN to /usr/sbin. Added the following line to /etc/rc: /usr/sbin/cscreen -x 1152 -y 864 -r 85 -d 32. Reboot and able to view the screen again.

Macosx 10.4.4 with 10.4.5 by Myzar Install DVD
Success upgrade from 10.4.3 and native install... Network still not working ( Broadcom 5751), audio working with kext from 10.4.3.
(USB Ethernet adaptor works fine
Anyone care to note which kext needs replaced?
For onboard Ethernet Adapter(Broadcom 5151) you need to modify/replace the AppleBCM5751Ethernet.kext For onboard Sound you neet to modify/replace the AppleAC97Audio.kext
For wireless I used the Linksys WPC54G pci card and modified IO80211Family.kext with vendor and device ids.

Macosx 10.4.4 with 10.4.5 by Myzar Install DVD
On-board ethernet works out of the box. Sound works after running MIDI Selector utility. AGP Radeon 8500 All-in-Wonder detected as VESA, works at 1280x1024, on the bright side the Firewire port on the Radeon was detected and is working. No SSE3 or QE/CI, though so not a particularly usable system in this configuration.

Pretty much everything works after install from Jas universal install DVD 10.4.5 Just had to fix permissions of applePS2Controller.kext after first reboot. sound don't show up in system profiler but it works nice, and you can adjust volumes.
[edit] HP COMPAQ D530 CMT
Pentium 4 550 @ 3.2GHz (SSE2 only) 1GB Memory Broadcom NetXtreme Ethernet for HP (PCI) (it really is a 57xx type card) (Vendor ID: 14e4, device id: 1696)
Did 10.4.5 install using generic install DVD. All things work except ethernet. Network card is Broadcomm 57xx. After following instructions on http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=8162, the ethernet card started working. Haven't found any other problems yet.
[edit] HP Compaq Evo D500 SFF
Pentium 4 1.8 GHz (SSE2 only) 640 MB RAM Onboard Ethernet works Did install with universal 10.4.4/10.4.5 DVD, installed Intel and SSE2 patches, as well as 10.4.5 upgrade. Included OEM AGP video card (nVidia Vanta) worked at 1024x768. Upgraded to a low-profile AGP video card, nVidia 5200, getting 1600x1200, see macvidia.com (make sure the card is low-profile, it won't fit otherwise!!) You will have to remove the slot cover from the new AGP card; removes easily with common tools. Audio works, but first few seconds are garbled, and audio plays too fast.
[edit] HP Dc7100
Method: Native install in a SATA disk
Kernel: "Macosx 10.4.4 with 10.4.5 by Myzar" DVD
Hardware: P4 3GHz, chipset Intel 915, 2Gb RAM, Intel GMA900, Ethernet Realtek RTL8139, AC97 on board, Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-110D
Comments: Installation process: OK (only if I select the patch "Maxxuss ownage" during the installation process). Ethernet and sound from first boot. The 10.4.5 system seems to be faster and more stable than 10.4.3 / 10.4.4. QuartzExtreme, DVD burner...
HP dc7100 CMT - Used MacOSX_10.4.4DVDPATCHED_Myz.iso which upgrades to 10.4.5 post installing, then turned off auto-updates. Used Kext_Helper_b7 to apply kext files(which did not work anyway).
Hardware: P4 530 Prescott 3.00GHz, chipset Intel 915, 2Gb RAM, Intel GMA900 works fine with 100% sleep/power/screensaver functionality and plays all vids fine. Tried a ASUS EAH ATI Radeon 3450 PCIe DDR2 256MB but that caused sleep issues where the monitor would not turn off, and would not play all vids anymore so a big step down from the onboard GMA900 full functionality which shows up as 256MB vRam, AC97 on board, TSST SH-S202J DVD burner, built-in Broadcom 57XX NetXtreme Gigabit NIC fails so added a Kingston pci NIC:
Base install detected AC97 sound, video, USB flash detection, DVD, USB mouse and keyboard, only the NIC not detected:
Radeon 3450(better to use onboard GMA900) change boot default 1024x768 resolution to 1280x1024 for a usable LCD display. Was working then tried to update to 3450 natit_x2000 kext(10.5 drivers) but could not boot and had to reinstall. The built in Intel GMA900 worked fine but did not try 1280x1024 with this. Followed the guide http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Tips_And_Tricks#Messing_with_the_boot_options. Note, had to do it twice for it to work and the com.apple.Boot.plist file was hidden. Had to copy and paste the commands into the Terminal window as per the guide and it worked eventually.(even though I could not browse to the com.apple.Boot.plist file).
Built in Broadcom 57XX NIC failed, and followed all the guides but it still did not work with either kext(AppleBCM5751Ethernet, AppleBCM5701Ethernet). After fighting for a few days just added an old Kingston pci NIC which worked immediately. Save yourself time and find another NIC if the built-in Broadcom is not detected immediately.

40 GB Samsung (IDE)
DLink 100mbit Adapter (RTL8139)
SIIG ATA133 IDE Adapter
Notes
Installed it through VMWare 5.5--I installed it on a older 40gb because I didn't think it would work on my SATA drives (plus it was mainly full of data anyway). update It did see all my SATA hard drives after all
The other IDE adapter didn't work with it, had to use the onboard IDE; which means no DVD drives ;_;
It did boot with the GMA950 enabled but stalled with a blue screen (oh the irony), but I rebooted with the Nvidia card and all was well. Stuck at the default 1024x768-60 though.
The onboard sound (SigmaTel HDA) is not currently detected.
The onboard Ethernet (Broadcom NetXtreme) is not detected either; hence the need for the DLink adapter to get online.
