HCL 10.4.8/Portables
From OSx86
|
[edit] Acer
[edit] Aspire 1692WLMi
Running MacOSX 10.4.8 Installing MacOSX presented no issues whatsoever. What works: A lot of stuff including sound, touchpad, all USBs, DVD+-RW, Ethernet Broadcom 5788 (with AppleBCM5701Ethernet.kext patched), Video drivers (ATI Mobility Radeon x700)(for 1280x800 check [1]), can watch videos perfectly (DivX, Xvid, WMV). It's really nice having Mac OS X almost fully working now, I have Office, Adium, iLife. What doesn't work: Card Reader, Intel Wifi, Conexant Modem.

- CPU: Celeron M 430 / 1.73 GHz (detected by CPU-Z as Yonah core)
- was advertised by Microcenter & on the box as a Celeron M 420, 1.6 GHz - got an extra 133 MHz for free!
- detected as Core Solo in JaS 10.4.6 & Core Duo in JaS 10.4.8
- MoBo chipset: Intel 945GM Express - all the basics like USB, SATA, keyboard, trackpad, etc. work fine

- PCMCIA: Texas Instruments chipset PCIxx12 - working after installing hacked driver + glitchman 10.4.8 kexts {see/search forums}
- 5-in-1 card reader: does not work, Windows device manager shows it as part of the PCMCIA chipset/interface
- PowerManagement: works fine
- Deep Sleep: like most hackintoshes, does not work (though someone claimed it working in 10.4.7 updated version)
- Dual Boot: kinda tricky - work in progress (lots of guides available on this one)
- Overall Impression: Can't beat the deal! Paid $450 and could get $50 back if I get around to mailing in the rebate. Everything either works fine out the box or can be gotten to work, except for built-in ethernet--but that can be gotten around by using a USB-to-ethernet adapter or probably PCMCIA card. Deep sleep is being worked on by others more technical than I. The laptop came with Vista basic, but ran like molasses. After installing Tiger x86, it pounces like a monster feline. Battery life seems to be about 3 hrs, depending on Energy Saver settings.

What works:
Everything except the WiFi. Will check CD burning and update this later to see if that works as well.
In order to get the WiFi to work, I had to follow this guide.
Important:
During the install when you select packages, select ONLY these packages:
- Essential System Software (Required anyways)
- Printer Drivers
- Additional Fonts
- Language Translations
- X11
- JaS Intel 10.4.8 ATA kexts included
- Laptop.Power.Management.Bundle
Don't select ANYTHING else (that means DO NOT SELECT the login window intel patch). Selecting anything else will cause your system to not boot.

- Ethernet: - works - AppleIntel8255x.kext (edit plist)

- WiFi: - Intel 2100 - doesn't work (experimental driver kills kernel). Swapped for a Dell TrueMobile 1450 which works after editing AirPortBrcm43xx plist, and requires tape over pins 11/13 to prevent the radio being turned off (again no hotkey driver)
- Tablet: - works with tabletmagic. Needs Apple16X50ACPI plist editing to match "WACF004" to enable the internal serial port
- Other issues: - clock runs slow, probably due to wrong FSB setting. Will try to fix. . .

Was able to use PCMCIA using parallels to emulate windows. (I Tried to fix for the Texas Instruments PCI-1420 Carbus Manage, but it dodn;t work, so I got Paralles for Mac from a friend, and am using it for wireless internet.
The only things I haven't got to work is the battery information (I don't need it anyway, it is always pugged in..) and the PCMCIA controller.

Working almost perfectly

- Firewire
- Sound
- Bluetooth
- Battery Indicator (though performance SUCKS while on battery so it's always plugged in for me). Used the power management package on Installation. If I disable SpeedStep on the bios, then it doesn't detect the battery. Shucks!
- CI+QE Graphics up to 1400x1050x32, editing com.apple.Boot.plist or Callisto 003.

Not Working
- Sleep Mode (Hangs, disable in system preferences.)
- PCMCIA (Have not tried to hard.)
- SD card reader
My way to 10.4.11. Fresh install JAS 10.4.8. Fix Network above link. Upgrade to 10.4.9 following the guides on forum regarding 10.4.9 update. (Backup certain kexts mach_kernel + network and ATI and then restore them before reboot.). Upgrade kernel to max patched 8.9 for 10.4.9 Repeat procedure with 10.4.11 comboupdate intel.
[edit] nc6120
Copied from 10.4.7, the same things apply here
Using JaS 10.4.8 - You need external monitor attached or use the 1-wire trick: [3]. Also, don't select the GMA950 package during installation, install it later on login and repair user/permissions.
Intel Pentium M @ 2Ghz - 1GB DDR2 533Mhz, Intel GMA915 Couldn't get it working on batteries - the performance is badly degraded. To use it on batteries disable intel speedstep in BIOS.

- Optical Drive
- Touchpad (enable tapping in System Preferences)

Warning: do NOT select JaS's GMA900 package during the instalation!!! Install it after the first reboot.
Working:
- Audio ( including speakers out and microphone in ) - working out of the box.
- LAN - it seems the included IONetworkFamily.kext is broken. Get the same kext from JaS's 10.4.7 release ( or from here ), replace the original one, repair kext's permitions and then reboot.
- Video - this is the solution to enable QE/CI:
1. Install Mac OS X 10.4.8 WITHOUT selecting JaS's GMA900 support package. 2. Reboot. 3. After first boot, install JaS's GMA900 support package from Mac OS X 10.4.8 install DVD. 4. Open Terminal and enter the following commands: sudo -i ( enter your account password, if ask ) cd /system/library/extensions chown R root:wheel AppleIntel915* chmod R 755 AppleIntel915* cd /system/library rm -rf Extensions.mkext Extensions.kextcache
5. Reboot.
Everyday boot is possible only with inserted paperclip or VGA dummy dongle.
- Optical drive - working fine with Toast Titanium 7 & 8.
- Touchpad - working out of the box.
- USB - both USB 1.1 and 2.0 working out of the box.
- Firewire working out of the box, tested on a JVC camcorder
- External USB Bluetooth adapter Belkin F0T013 - working out of the box.
Not working:
- Modem
- Sleep function
Not tested:
- Cardbus controller - not tested, maybe this manual will make it work.
System works pretty fast and stable. QuickTIme 7.1.3 and ITunes 7.0.2 worked flawlessly. The only problem is the slow performance of DVD Player, but I'm using VLC instead.
Another success story:
My NX6110 is like the one described above, the only difference being an Intel 2200 wireless chipset instead of broadcom. I can confirm that the GMA900 support should not be installed during OS install. The solution to get QE/CI as described above did not work for me. I did have success by installing the http://diabolik1605.com/DHF/iNVidia.html GMA900 Patch.
Initially got wireless network working by installing the iwi2200 package. Currently this driver only supports unencrypted networkds. Therefore i purchased a second hand Sitecom WL-113 USB stick for 10 euros and installed the native Osx factory driver which works splendidly. Might try to find a broadcom mini-PCI card which should also work.
Touchpad working, but no scrolling.
Sleep is kind of working. Screen turns black but HD keeps spinning. At least it comes back from sleep normally.
System is very useable and feels even smoother than my Win XP installation. My crappy notebook just got a facelift!

Same computer as above, works very well with trackpad, keyboard...
Not working: wireless (seems that it can't be identified by the system, problem with AppleIOPCIFamily
Won't sleep (freezes the computer)
Sound works with Azalea audio driver found on Insanely Mac Forums
Same trick as above to get the computer to shutdown without error.
Trackpad beahves erratically, fixed by an enhanced ApplePS2 kext from InsanelyMac

1. Installed using this DVD: JaS.Mac.OS.X.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSE2.SSE3.PPF.1.Defiant.diskut
2. Selected the AMD, Nvidia, and Note book power utilities. (to speed things up, uncheck the language, printers, and fonts)
3. Then right after boot from installation select -s and run these commands at the prompt.
/sbin/fsck -fy
/sbin/mount -uw /
cd /System/Library/Extensions
mkdir disabled
mv NV* disabled
kextcache -k ./
reboot
4. After successfully setting up OSX (entering all the account info), run disk utilities and check permissions on your disk, if you are daring enough, open terminal and enter the following commands to help speed things up:
sudo -s
kexcache -e -z -a i386
kextcache -a i386 -z -k /System/Library/Extensions

This is one heck of a laptop for the $399 at Walmart. I was pretty impressed that it would run OSX very well. If we could only get the x200m video card to display QE/CI it would be perfect.

[edit] Inspiron 1100
It is possible to run on this machine.
- System: 2.39GHz Pentium 4 (SSE2) with 1024MB RAM
- Graphics: Intel onboard 845GL
- Ethernet: Untested
- Audio: Needs a kext which I lost :-S, may vary depending on age.
- another Inspiron 1100 -
- 2 GHz Celeron (SSE2) w 512MB RAM
- Intel 845GL - no QE/CI, so mplayer, vlc, google earth doesn't work.
- Ethernet and PCMCIA works well with the following kexts:
IONetworkingFamily.kext IOPCIFamily.kext IOPCCardFamily.kext
all kext are from 10.4.7 installer. Audio out and mic in works well.
Use 8.8.1 semthex kernel with 8.8.1 system.kext for cool cpu!
For 10.4.9, use 10.4.8 install with 10.4.4 loginwindow.app and the modified 10.4.9 system update, and the first version of 2007.4 security update (This two update available on 10.4.9 installer DVD.).
Works with 10.4.10 update too.
After all updates, before restart, copy back the following kexts from backup:
AppleACPIPlatform.kext AppleSMBIOS.kext IOATAFamily.kext IONetworkingFamily.kext IOPCCardFamily.kext IOPCIFamily.kext System.kext
to /System/Library/Extensions,
copy back the kernel mach_kernel to root,
copy back the 10.4.4 loginwindow.app to /System/Library/CoreServices.
Repair permissions and reboot.
You can find a useful cooler fan control app, called i8kfan for Dell laptops: http://potatosaladx.blogspot.com/
My patcher with semthex 8.8.1 kernel for inspiron 1100 available here: http://depositfiles.com/files/1116095

--- Added by PotatoSalad --- Everything works after a lot of tweaking. Installed 10.4.8 from DVD image, updated to 10.4.9 with koolkal's kernel and combo update using this method.
- System: 2.39GHz Pentium 4 (SSE2) with 384MB RAM
- Graphics: QE yes, CI no (Radeon 7500 with 32MB RAM)
- Network
- Audio: works from the start, mic starts working miraculously after installing the Cardbus controller

--- Edit by jdoyle ---- It all works! Using 10.4.8 Semthex kernel. Had to install standard networking.kext file available on this forum and battery indicator also easily found here. CI & QE work, DVD player works, firewire, ethernet ( with kext ) . Wireless internet using ASUS WG167L USB dongle and OS X drivers. Makes a great Hackintosh! .
--- Edit by starfighta ---- Started with JaS 10.4.8 then upgraded to Kalyway 10.4.10. Graphics, CI & QE, USB, FW, ethernet, DVD+R burning, work out-of-box. No dual-display yet with NVinject, titan, or natit. No PCMCIA yet. Wireless works by same method as 5160: <string>pci14e4,4320</string> in IO80211Family.kext\Contents\PlugIns\AppleAirPortBrcm4311.kext\Contents\Info.plist. (that is for Dell Truemobile 1350). Thank you sebus for the heads-up.
Interesting note: Performance was okay but graphics were a little sluggish. After reading about Dell laptops in the Speedboost section I figured that must be the reason. However there is no "compatible" option in the 5150 BIOS. Turns out Dell updated the BIOS at A36 to switch the clock speed during startup as mentioned. In OS X this shows up as 1.6Ghz in the System Profiler meaning that the clock never switches into full speed. Downgrading the BIOS if you are A36 or greater (I was A38) will solve the problem and will significantly boost processor and graphics performance. Be warned tho: Dell put the update out in response to issues of a batch of 5150s melting the case which ruins the motherboard! The Dell has shut itself off once since downgrading due to overheating so I blew air into the vents to dust off the heat-exchanger. Has been running for days without any further issue, although it is not nearly as quiet as my MBPro. .
