Mac OS X 10.5.6
Hardware Compatibility

This is a component level hardware compatibility list. We want to keep it as accurate as possible, but please, do not entirely rely on this list when buying hardware. Add which parts you have working in the categories listed below, or create a new category. Please keep alphabetical order inside the categories. The categories themselves are ordered by popularity. Please list any caveats or problems as well.

  • ONLY add hardware that you have TESTED. Don't add hardware just because you think it might work.
  • Please add hardware into tables.
  • This is for 10.5.6 builds only.

For how to edit the Wiki, please see this thread. Thank you!

Fix for 1 CPU issue: download a modified bios, [6] choose file 4CoreDual-SATA2 v2.10 After you flashed the bios, you can simply install it without the need of the cpus=1 One Core fix, and can use both(or more) cores of your cpu ;)

EFI & Bootloader (out of the box), Voodoo 9.5.0 kernel + nvDarwin OS reports a Mac Pro 3.1: Shutdown, Restart works. Logitech G15 Keyboard fully functional. Still running on one core (will update when DSDT is working). The MOST important thing in the install is to ensure NO device is connected to the JMicron controller. Your installation drive should be connected to port0 of the ICH10R, put your DVD drive wherever as long as it is on the ICH10R. If you have a pre-built RAID, don't be concerned as adding devices will not affect the RAIDs integrity (as long as you leave all member disks attached). You might need to use the Intel RAID control panel from within Windows to mark the "Non-member" disk as a "Non-RAID" disk, otherwise it will be invisible. Thanks to ASUS, for ignoring every question I submited.

  • Was also able to use ACL888 after OS install via HDApatcher app.
  • ACL97 didn't work for me but I may have overlooked something.
  • Mac Pro SMBIOS
  • Use eno's nForceLan driver
  • USB was working and add IOUSBMASSSTORAGE fix when installing plus TIME SYNC FIX as well for my vista install.
  • Used nvinject DEFAULT(other drivers failed at boot) for 8800 GT video card, once booted did manual efi update via guide

Used iPC 10.5.6 FINAL, Install with:

  • Vanilla Kernel (Used iPC default kernel)
  • Installed Chameleon 2.0 after install. Works great.
  • shutdown/restart is NOT functional so far with my install. But small price to pay to have to push a button. Sleep works, but my CPU fan kicked up a notch when i booted up, went back to normal after restart.

Using iDeneb v1.4, Install with:

  • Vanilla Kernel
  • nForceATA
  • AzaliusAudio
  • Mac Pro SMBIOS

Notes:

  • Using nForceEthernet causes kernel panics when downloading >1mb
  • Use eno's nForceLan driver
  • USB doesn't work unless computer is booted with it plugged in
  • Using nVidia 9800 GTX 512mb here, nvinject 512 works.
Yes, for now.
  • haven't tested shutdown/sleep/restart yet.
EVGA 680I SLI LT
  • Works with Ideneb 10.5.6 using Voodoo kernel, and sleep kernel. SATA works out of box and in fact I installed using an sata disk drive and sata hd. I also set up a raid array "not bootable yet". Sound is ALC 885, works perfectly with ALC choice in installer. All ports detected. Nforce ethernet does work using patch however I used a different pci card. 8800gts works perfectly with darwin patch or nvinject. Everything works perfectly but sleep. I could not get it to sleep at all.
  • If you use at least 4gs of ram you will have random crashing. This is due to the applenforceata.kext It cannot address memory in 64 bits so it WILL crash. If you visit code.google.com you can obtain a patch for it to fix the problem. There is a free program called rember and it will test the memory to provoke a crash and test stability so you know it is fixed. Also if you want to boot from a raid array, disable raid in the bios. Install to a single disk. when you boot into os create the array like you would if it were a real mac. When you are finished use the restore utility and use your current disk as source and your array as destination. Then install the chameleon bootloader installer to the array but it still will not boot. When that is done go to your boot.plist file and under kernel flags type
<string>boot-uuid=number here</string>

and then your raid array unique identifier. This can be found in disk utility. Right click on array and then information. Thats it and if you have trouble visit, [19] for answers

EVGA nForce 680i SLI Rev.A0 nForce 680i

Using iPC OSx86 Final 10.5.6 V1.1 (nForce)-(see iPC homepage), Install with:

  • Voodoo 9.5.0 Kernel
  • Seatbelt.kext
  • nForceATA(TEST)-from the V1.1 PPF !
  • Azalia Audio
  • nForceLAN (by Eno)
  • SMBIOS Hardcoded to 667mhz DDR2

Notes:

  • I used nVinject 512mb for my 7900GTO, but QE is not working yet (its because of my card being a GTO)
  • Azalia (HD) Audio works
  • PATA works, SATA Works, USB Works
  • Processor shows accurately as XEON 3060 Dual-Core 2.4 Ghz
  • 4GB Ram works at 667mhz
Voodoo 9.5.0
  • Not yet.

GA-EG31m-s2 Intel G31/ ICH7 Use IPC Universal Final, no kernal selected (9.6 by default), no graphics card selected (i use geforce 9600 gso and used NVdarwin installer 1.2.5). Sound was not working but later fixed with alc888 using osx86 tools by pcwiz. I had issues with shutdowdown and time machine which I think were related to having an on board network card and a pci wireless I used efistudio tomake a string for my pci wireless and this fixed those problems mostly. Shutdow doesnt turn my fans off but time machine is flawless. Other issues were a buggy jumpy mouse which was fixed by downgrading to previous quicktime version using pacifist. Other issues unidentified proccessor I used AboutThisMac to fix it. Yes
GA-EP45-DS3L & -DS3LR rev 1.0 Intel P45 ICH10 sound very hapy5+1 with voodoo hda.kekxt This board is very compatible. It works nicely with 10.5.5, and 10.5.6. With 10.5.6, sleep shuts down the computer, that is the only bug so far. Other than that you can perform a full retail fresh 10.5.6 install with a real retail DVD with this guide. The guide uses a Core2 Quad 2.66, all hardware works fine except there are advantages to using the recommended network card. Yes Yes, with supplied kexts

GA-EP45-UD3P Intel P45 ICH10R Install using retail 10.5.6 and this guide. It is the only guide that has everything working properly. Don't use an older guide for 10.5.6. You can add device ID to install disc if you know how. [20] instructions are in the RTF file. No trial and error necessary. Yes Audio and Lan work perfectly ONLY with this guide. Shutdown, restart, sleep: perfect. Speedstep not working, but there is probably a fix for that. latest Rev 1.6 mobo speedstep works, Time Machine works.

  • LAN: Realtek 8211BL (had problems before), now installed ok with Realtek R1000.kext included in the iPC install DVD.
  • SATA fully working, installed nForce drivers included in the iPC install DVD.
  • Optical Drive: ASUS DVD-RW 1814BLT, works great, no problem whatsoever.
  • Shutdowns, and reboots fine.
After the install, I had problems with the start-up.It was rebooting right after the apple logo appeared. So, I used EasyBCD in Windows 7, and I set the boot at MAC OSX section to be MBR, not EFI, so that now it works ok.I hope this trick will help a lot of AMD users out there.(I'm using an AMD Athlon II X2 240, which is recognised as an Intel Core 2 Duo at 3.2Ghz). Intel DG35EC Intel G35 with ICH8 Install using iDeneb v1.4 10.5.6 with default Vanilla kernel. yes/yes NO: Mic didn't work. (for now: 7 May 2009, waiting for a .kext file that activates the mic. The AppleHDAPatcher v1.20 didn't work).

Also requires Shutdown/Restart Fix.

Intel DG35EC Intel G35 with ICH8 Tried both iPC 10.5.6 Final PPF5 and iDeneb v1.4 10.5.6 with Vanilla and patched kernels. Neither would install a boot loader after multiple attempts and various selections of drivers and BIOS settings. Since the OS would load with the install DVD in the drive, I installed Chameleon 2.0RC1 from OSX and can now can boot perfectly without the DVD in the drive (using iPC and Vanilla kernel). NVinject did not seem to detect my PCI-E Jaton nVidia 7200GS properly (choppy, no hardware acceleration), but NVdarwin did. I did not try the Intel on-board video. I also had issues with every ALC888 driver included with iPC. Used NVdarwin 256MB for video, Intel ICHx SATA for chipset, Intel 82566MM/DC for LAN, and Azalia Audio for sound (without mic support though). I am also using the AppleSMBIOS-27 Rev3 800MHz SMBIOS, which matches my RAM speed. Initial shutdown/reboot problems; now solved using the included Shutdown/Restart Fix during the iPC OS install. Everything is working perfectly now except the mic jack.

  • LAN: PCGen RTL 8139
  • Pick Seatbelt 10.5.5
  • Pick PS/2 Keyboard even when on a laptop. (not mouse, just keyboard)
  • USB Hard disk:
    • Won't recognize when booting from DVD, but will work after installation. This means you should if you use external USB Hard Disk for Time Machine, you can't use it to restore from the DVD boot. You have to install new system, and the restore. So it's better to create a second partition on the internal hard disk and use that for the Time Machine backup.
  • Wireless:
    • The built in Wireless is RaLink 0201. It doesn't work with OS X, so you have to use a wired conection.
      • I'm ordering a "Belkin F5D8053 N Wireless USB Adapter" and when I try it, I'll update this section.
  • iPod / iPhone Connection
    • There's no way to get iTunes to recognize it on this computer.
  • DVD Movies
    • DVD requires "Quartz Extreme" support, which this computer doesn't have. You cannot play DVDs even with VLC. However, other videos work fine.
  • OS X / iPhone SDK works fine. You can even use the built-in iPhone emulator. But you'll need to upgrade to 10.5.7 (see next column)

You can use Apple Software Update to upgrade 10.5.7, but then reboot from original DVD, deselect OS install, and select all the other options again.

No, you have to use Voodoo because SSE3 is used by the vanilla kernel, and it won't work on this computer. If Voodoo doesn't work, you'll have to pick another kernel that doesn't use SSE3 instructions.

GeForce 7300GT 256MB NVIDIA Use Natit.kext QE/CL Supported All resolutions with Natit.kext
GeForce 7300GT 256MB ASUS I couldn't get it to run with NVInject, nor NVDarwin, nor Kush, or whatever. But this works! Download Universal Installer, run it, check install video driver and choose GeForce 7300GT 256RAM. Click install and restart. QE/CL Supported All resolutions Yes

GeForce 7800GT 256MB Asus Leo4Allv3 + NVInject 0.2.1 QE/CL Supported All resolutions Yes (but TVout is not working)
GeForce 7800GTX 256MB MSI First had to remove all Nvidia and GeForce kexts, anything to do with graphics, then had to use the 9f23installer ([48]), then add the EFI string with OSX86Tools, as EFI Studio didn't have the string QE/CL Supported All resolutions It does in 10.5.2, but not in 10.5.6 with 9f23install drivers, and EFI string

Geforce 7900 GT KO 512MB eVGA Was showing VESA (256MB) at boot, so I performed the following steps: 1) reflashed video EEPROM using nvflash and "hacked" ROM file from here. 2) Installed 9f23installer.pkg, then 3) Used EFIStudio to install correct EFI string to com.apple.boot.plist QE/CL Supported All resolutions Yes, with added string
GeForce 7900 GT 512MB Sonic Palit 1) Darwin bootloader detected only 256MB so I had to update ROM as described here (I didn't use the one from ROM repositoty because it differed a lot from the one I dumped from my video card, so I just changed 4 bytes myself according to the instruction).

2) After that OSX successfully booted with any of (and I guess any other) NVdarwin and NVinject (check that IOProbeScore is set to 0 in Info.plist) - had to do this step to be able to do the next one since I couldn't boot even in safe mode without injectors. You may stop here if you like, HW acceleration is already supported, but I like EFI way more, so here is the next step.

3) Used OSx86Tools to add EFI string and removed all injectors.
