Mac OS X 10.5.8 Hardware Compatibility

This is a component level hardware compatibility list. We want to keep it as accurate as possible, but please, do not entirely rely on this list when buying hardware. Add which parts you have working in the categories listed below, or create a new category. Please keep alphabetical order inside the categories. The categories themselves are ordered by popularity. Please list any caveats or problems as well.

  • ONLY add hardware that you have TESTED. Don't add hardware just because you think it might work.
  • Please add hardware into tables.
  • This is for 10.5.8 builds only.

For how to edit the Wiki, please see this thread. Thank you!

  • LGA 775 / Intel Core2 Quad Q8200 2.2 Ghz recognized Intel Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8200
  • 4 Giga Ram 2x2G Team line 800mhz dual channel
  • MSI NX8400GS 512MB working with nvinject 0.2.1
  • TP-Link TL-WN651G PCI 108 MBPS PCI Wireless card /
  • Install metod iDeneb 10.5.8 Lite Edition : Very compatible motherboard / Everithing work out of the box, just selected nvinject for video, Atheros Wireless for TP-LINK WN651G and audio ALC 1200 , Installation runned smooth, the system is stable, before I've used many different distro on this motherboard (Leo4All iPC XxX iDeneb) but with this 10.5.8 I really see change about system stability
Audio need patch, Video and Wireless also
Asus P5Q Turbo P45+ICH10
  • LGA775 / Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz 12MB L2 Cache (very quiet)
  • 8MB RAM Kingston KHX8500D2K2/4G Kit / ICH10R South / JMicron JMB361 SATA&PATA UDMA133 & Esata
  • MSI Nvidia N9500GT-MD1G-OC/D2 1024 Mem DDR2 HDMI/VGA/DVI ($109)
  • built-in LAN Atheros L1E Gigabit (Attansic)
  • Bluray SATA HL-DT-ST BD-RE BH08LS20 . Do not bluray: It becomes a very expensive AHCI Osx dvd burner. You can get a SATA dvd writer for a few bucks
  • WirelessN TP-Link TL-WN851N (Atheros) $30 = AirPort Extreme 0x168C, 0x3079 /built in Hardware RAID Silicon Image Sil5723 "Drive Expert" / built in HD Audio VIA VT1708S/ built in IE1394 = Via VT6315N / 2 X Samsung 500GB 2.5 SATA "green drives" plus an Old Tivo drive on IDE0 (Sil5723 BIOS setup will erase all your data, so backup) / Except for Nvidia, P5Q Turbo+Q9550 combo = quiet/green.

Install Method: iAtkos 10.5.7 + Chameleon 2.0 RC2 r 640, then Apple registration, do not reboot yet, then repair permissions, then reboot, then 10.5.8 update from HAL. First 20 tries: I could not make it work. Secret=Fully read Iatkos welcome screen. Secret=if unsure, leave the install package unselected, fail, read the logs & try again. Tried Netkass latest cutie booty, and funny "bag of hurt" says I have to upgrade my firmware. (Netkas is the best). Note: For some reason, If during registration the user creates no password, everything fails. I could not find any InsanelyMac references to this issue. If you transfer settings it fails. Do not Time Machine or fails.

  • Insanely advised I flashed BIOS (someone else's patched ROM) and my mobo died. Had Clear CMOS twice & remove batery. I re-flashed original version 0402. So DO NOT flash with someone's ROM . (if you are going to flash an edited bios , edit it yourself. Read Evosx86)
  • ICH10R working select Iatkos kext / WLAN no kext needed=Installs native as Airport Extreme (chipset is Atheros) / LAN L1E Gigabit=After you are 10.5.7.good install Attansic (kexts.com/backup/index.php?controller=Motherboard&mID=224) / MSI Nvidia: select Iatkos top Nvidia kext & VGA/DVI or DVI/VGA string. This will give you DVI/VGA 1920x1080@60Hz with Core Image Software & Quartz Extreme Not Supported. After 10.5.7.good, then Install Pcwiz OSx86 Tools Utility and enable Quartz GL. Sound select Voodoo HDA iatkos kext. SPDIF connected to Nvidia works but with faint pops/cracks now here and then, so rather use back/front sound outputs, and disconnect SPDIF from Nvidia. Asus noise filter works in Windoze but not in OSX (Does the "bag of hurt" fully supports HDMI with High Def. sound?).

After 10.5.8 upgrade MSI Nvidia N9500GT-MD1G-OC will be: Chipset Model:nVidia GeForce 9500 GT/Bus:PCIe /PCIe Lane Width:x16/VRAM (Total):1024 MB/Vendor:NVIDIA (0x10de)/Device ID:0x0640/Revision ID:0x00a1/ROM Revision:0x/Resolution: 1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz/Depth:32-Bit Color/Core Image:Hardware Accelerated/Quartz Extreme:Supported/HDMI=1280X720 0r 1080i (the three outputs are simultaneously active, nvidia no green). HDMI:1280X720 looks soft. HDMI:1080i looks like crap (looks good in Windoze though)/DVI and VGA look awesome.

  • Hardware RAID, the good: No need to worry, it works from BIOS, invisible to os. OSX thinks 2x500GB Samsung 2.5 inch drives = 1 hard drive (DriveXpert HDD0 Capacity 931.52 GB Model: DriveXpert HDD0Revision:1.1615 Serial Number: CP-5723_12345678_0_F Native Command Queuing:Yes Queue Depth:32 Removable Media: No.) The bad: RAID 0 "Drive Expert" performance is kind of good... but not spectacular. (7200rpm "green" notebook drives story, not the fastest). I have not meassured drives throughput yet. Select Iatkos JMicron SATA/IDE kext. IDE0 old-tivo-drive is good, ESATA recognized as JMicron AHCI-3 Gigabit-Version 1.00. Have not tried to hot swap ESATA yet. Speedstep works. Sleep is bad (using S1). Shutdown/Restart working select OHR kext. Osx 10.5.7 or 10.5.8 says it is 64bits MacPro native install. ****Does it work out of the (iAtkos) box?**** Most features do.
  • Next: Snow Leopard with edited MSI-Nvidia ROM and edited P5Q Turbo ROM. Please PayRespect or PayPal$20 to Chameleon team, Iatkos, Netkas, Thank all the developers. You will learn a lot. They will keep developing.

  • GUIDE: To restore your kexts, just type something like:

cd /Volumes/YOURMACVOLUME/System/Library/
cp -r Extensions Extensions_new

rm -rf Extensions

cp -r Extensions_old Extensions

rm -rf Extensions.mkext
  • Then (optionally) rebuild your cache with:

 kextcache -k Extensions/
  •
Before rebooting go into disk utilities, find you mac osx volume, right click on the partiotion to get “informations” and remember you disk id (something like disk0s1 or disk0s2) .
  • Now quit the installation process and reboot.
  • On first boot after that enter: (example) rd=disk0s2 -f -v
  • Upon successful restoration system will restart again and than boot properly. Then last thing after this step is to match kernel and system.kext. To do that simply install system.kext (9.8.0) from Extensions_new folder. Didn't need to install any driver or anything further...
Yes.

9.8.0. darwin kernel

Yes.

The only one thing which needs to be restored is system.kext. Everything else is working properly.

GeForce 7900 GT 512MB Sonic Palit 1) Darwin bootloader detected only 256MB so I had to update ROM as described here (I didn't use the one from ROM repositoty because it differed a lot from the one I dumped from my video card, so I just changed 4 bytes myself according to the instruction).

2) After that OSX successfully booted with any of (and I guess any other) NVdarwin and NVinject (check that IOProbeScore is set to 0 in Info.plist) - had to do this step to be able to do the next one since I couldn't boot even in safe mode without injectors. You may stop here if you like, HW acceleration is already supported, but I like EFI way more, so here is the next step.

3) Used OSx86Tools to add EFI string and removed all injectors.
