Hardware Compatibility

This is a component level hardware compatibility list. We want to keep it as accurate as possible, but please, do not entirely rely on this list when buying hardware. Add which parts you have working in the categories listed below, or create a new category. Please keep alphabetical order inside the categories. The categories themselves are ordered by popularity. Please list any caveats or problems as well.

  • ONLY add hardware that you have TESTED. Don't add hardware just because you think it might work.
  • Please add hardware into tables.
  • This is for 10.5.8 builds only.

For how to edit the Wiki, please see this thread. Thank you!

Hardware Name Chipset Notes EFI/Vanilla kernel working Fully Working w/o Patch
P4C800E-Deluxe ICH5 South Bridge
  • iDeneb 10.5.8 v.1.6 Lite Edition
  • P4C800-E Deluxe (no AHCI in BIOS - set to IDE, not RAID)
  • P4 3GHz
  • RAM Adata 2GB
  • XFX (nVidia) GeForce 6600GT
  • ethernet VIA 6307
  • everything works except Sleep Mode
  • =============
  • first install with default customization, should install fine
  • if doesn't boot, start adding one by one:
  • kernel: 9.5.0 Voodoo
  • HD: Drivers/Chipset/ICHx fix (to fix lack of AHCI in BIOS); without this driver it will "Still waiting for root device"
  • if HD still doesn't work, try adding Drivers/Chipset/AHCI SATA-IDE
  • Take care of the rest after the system boots fine:
  • graphics - NVDarwin 128MB (replace 128 with your graphics memory size). nVidia is best, as Apple has some problems with ATI - no drivers for ATI, and ATI was leaving a trail of artefacts after the cursor.
  • audio - AppleAC97Audio.kext - not included in the build, find it online
  • DVD, USB, FireWire - work out of the box
  • Ethernet - should work by itself; if not, unplug the cord and plug it back in; if don't want unplugging, it should start working within minutes. If doesn't, look for kext (note: AppleIntel8255x.kext caused kernel panic - I ended up removing it manually).
  • To remove a bad kext manually, enter -s at the loader prompt for single user mode. Once in single user mode (text console), enter:
  • mount -uw /
  • sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/<Bad Kext Name>.kext
  • and reboot.
  • Good luck!

  • MSI Nvidia N9500GT-MD1G-OC/D2 1024 Mem DDR2 HDMI/VGA/DVI ($109)
  • built-in LAN Atheros L1E Gigabit (Attansic)
  • Bluray SATA HL-DT-ST BD-RE BH08LS20 . Do not bluray: It becomes a very expensive AHCI Osx dvd burner. You can get a SATA dvd writer for a few bucks
  • WirelessN TP-Link TL-WN851N (Atheros) $30 = AirPort Extreme 0x168C, 0x3079 /built in Hardware RAID Silicon Image Sil5723 "Drive Expert" / built in HD Audio VIA VT1708S/ built in IE1394 = Via VT6315N / 2 X Samsung 500GB 2.5 SATA "green drives" plus an Old Tivo drive on IDE0 (Sil5723 BIOS setup will erase all your data, so backup) / Except for Nvidia, P5Q Turbo+Q9550 combo = quiet/green.

Install Method: iAtkos 10.5.7 + Chameleon 2.0 RC2 r 640, then Apple registration, do not reboot yet, then repair permissions, then reboot, then 10.5.8 update from HAL. First 20 tries: I could not make it work. Secret=Fully read Iatkos welcome screen. Secret=if unsure, leave the install package unselected, fail, read the logs & try again. Tried Netkass latest cutie booty, and funny "bag of hurt" says I have to upgrade my firmware. (Netkas is the best). Note: For some reason, If during registration the user creates no password, everything fails. I could not find any InsanelyMac references to this issue. If you transfer settings it fails. Do not Time Machine or fails.

  • Insanely advised I flashed BIOS (someone else's patched ROM) and my mobo died. Had Clear CMOS twice & remove batery. I re-flashed original version 0402. So DO NOT flash with someone's ROM . (if you are going to flash an edited bios , edit it yourself. Read Evosx86)
  • ICH10R working select Iatkos kext / WLAN no kext needed=Installs native as Airport Extreme (chipset is Atheros) / LAN L1E Gigabit=After you are 10.5.7.good install Attansic (kexts.com/backup/index.php?controller=Motherboard&mID=224) / MSI Nvidia: select Iatkos top Nvidia kext & VGA/DVI or DVI/VGA string. This will give you DVI/VGA 1920x1080@60Hz with Core Image Software & Quartz Extreme Not Supported. After 10.5.7.good, then Install Pcwiz OSx86 Tools Utility and enable Quartz GL. Sound select Voodoo HDA iatkos kext. SPDIF connected to Nvidia works but with faint pops/cracks now here and then, so rather use back/front sound outputs, and disconnect SPDIF from Nvidia. Asus noise filter works in Windoze but not in OSX (Does the "bag of hurt" fully supports HDMI with High Def. sound?).

After 10.5.8 upgrade MSI Nvidia N9500GT-MD1G-OC will be: Chipset Model:nVidia GeForce 9500 GT/Bus:PCIe /PCIe Lane Width:x16/VRAM (Total):1024 MB/Vendor:NVIDIA (0x10de)/Device ID:0x0640/Revision ID:0x00a1/ROM Revision:0x/Resolution: 1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz/Depth:32-Bit Color/Core Image:Hardware Accelerated/Quartz Extreme:Supported/HDMI=1280X720 0r 1080i (the three outputs are simultaneously active, nvidia no green). HDMI:1280X720 looks soft. HDMI:1080i looks like crap (looks good in Windoze though)/DVI and VGA look awesome.

  • Hardware RAID, the good: No need to worry, it works from BIOS, invisible to os. OSX thinks 2x500GB Samsung 2.5 inch drives = 1 hard drive (DriveXpert HDD0 Capacity 931.52 GB Model: DriveXpert HDD0Revision:1.1615 Serial Number: CP-5723_12345678_0_F Native Command Queuing:Yes Queue Depth:32 Removable Media: No.) The bad: RAID 0 "Drive Expert" performance is kind of good... but not spectacular. (7200rpm "green" notebook drives story, not the fastest). I have not meassured drives throughput yet. Select Iatkos JMicron SATA/IDE kext. IDE0 old-tivo-drive is good, ESATA recognized as JMicron AHCI-3 Gigabit-Version 1.00. Have not tried to hot swap ESATA yet. Speedstep works. Sleep is bad (using S1). Shutdown/Restart working select OHR kext. Osx 10.5.7 or 10.5.8 says it is 64bits MacPro native install. ****Does it work out of the (iAtkos) box?**** Most features do.
  • Next: Snow Leopard with edited MSI-Nvidia ROM and edited P5Q Turbo ROM. Please PayRespect or PayPal$20 to Chameleon team, Iatkos, Netkas, Thank all the developers. You will learn a lot. They will keep developing.

You must type F8 at DVD Boot and enter busratio=17 at the prompt, or you'll get kernel panic on CPU 0. Doing so will correct the FSB value at 200 mhz and the busratio at 17, to give 3415 mhz. You can add those values in your com.apple.boot.plist under <key>Kernel flags</key>, right after the <string> tag, like this:

<Key>Kernel Flags</> <string>busratio=17</string> . Enter the value coresponding to your actual CPU multiplier. For memory to report correctly, set the ram clock speed to auto in BIOS. Report to 667 mhg if set to 800 mhz.

Voodoo Kernel 9.7.0, no EFI, no smbios (Chameleon takes care of the SMBios) How to install: all defaults, add OHR, uncheck appleDecrypt and check dsmos instead, Chameleon v2, Kernel Voodoo 9.7.0, disable TyMCE, NVInject for graphics (for NVidia 7xxx, 8xxx or 9xxx it works perfectly well. Try other for GTX2xx for newer video cards, leave VoodooHDA by default for inboard sound card

Choose a language, install, reboot on DVD, repair permissions, boot on your Hackintosh HDD press enter at Chameleon screen, and enter -f busratio=17 (or your own cpu multiplier, which is your default cpu speed divided by 200, for example if you have a 3 ghz cpu, the value should be 3000/200=15) if you encounter kernel panic. If it doesn't resolve the problem, try deactivating the firewire in your bios (IEEE1384 in the advance tab, onboard device configuration) With those instructions, you should be able to enjoy the welcome video with sound, and believe me, it is an experience!

I installed openhaltrestart.kext but it did not work. Pre Bios setup-

  • Disable Firewire - Sata/raid=ahci mode - everything else leave to default.

Pre-Installation Hardware Setup

  • Installed from Sata DVD on Sata slot # 2(doesn't matter as long it's not on sata0). Installed to Sata HDD on sata0 (i got "still waiting on root device" when i installed first time cause it was not connected to sata0)

Installation

  • Selected no alternate Kernel
  • ICHX
  • JmirconATA
  • ALC889a (needs patched. GO HERE for alc889a. Might need HDAenabler too here. I didn't run the alc889a.sh. just use kext helper.
  • Realtek1000
  • IOUSBFamily_SLice fix (not sure if you actually needed it, i just selected. didn't hurt either)
  • SMBios Resolver
  • You need to obtain the Sata drive icon fix (new). I got mine from the ipc 10.5.6 universal dvd
  • Voodoo ps/2 fix (If you choose to you ps/s devices)
  • Everything else is up to you!

Tips

  • It would be best to have kext helper on a flash drive or somewhere you can access it.
  • I install on 1 Sata HDD connected to sata0. I have secondary Sata HDD connected to sata1 with Windows Vista(unpluged during installation). I have 1 Sata DVD connected to sata2. I have 1 Pata HDD set to cable select. All boots fine. Jmicron is being a good boy this time!

  • Shutdown, reboot & sleep working.

installed netkas's Universal Injector for ATI & nVidia later: blue screen w/pointer until display sleep/wake; using "hot corner" workaround. Going to try new Chameleon w/integrated injector. Additional note: this board has been a learning experience ;-) Many trials & failures getting everything working; only iDeneb would complete w/ AnV cpus=1 to boot install... iATKOS & iPC would not install. Network dead after wake from sleep; must reboot to recover.

  • @Install runs fine with normal bios settings, however if you are using a SATA HD; when it comes to booting the installed OS, you must enable AHCI in the bios (integrated peripherals > SATA controller > then change IDE mode to AHCI) and have your SATA hard drive in the first SATA port or the system hangs on apple loading screen claiming it cannot fine the system install. Not sure what happens with IDE disks. I also set ACPI to S3 mode beforehand, not sure if it helps with this board or not but I know it effects many boards. I never ran into ACPI issues.
  • AMD Phenom II 940 X4 Black Edition (3.0Ghz, 512k L2, 6MB L3)
  • 4 GB DDR2 800 Mhz
  • Install Method: iDeneb 1.6 lite - 10.5.8 - DVD-rom.
  • Used chameleon 1.0.xx from iDeneb DVD, 2.0 (default) not tested but this one worked. Didnt try the default becuase I'd have 1.0.xx working before.
  • Kernel: Voodoo 9.5.0
  • Audio: Tried to use generic stero driver on the dvd, didn't work. Currently using Toneport GX USB sound device. Cheap USB audio jack dongle works also.
  • LAN: Realtek onboard Ethernet, Web worked out of box, however I could only access network shares (timecapsule) after I installed the Realtek1000 driver from the iDeneb disk. (I kernel panicked once, just after installing this driver and rebooting - only panic so far, not 100% sure it was even related to this driver but thought I'd add this)
  • USB works fine once your booted and you have working KB/M (read lower), firewire not tested.
  • From time to time the system starts and I cant move my mouse/use keyboard - could be usb not working in general, booting with -v fixes this every time for some reason.
  • Shutdown and restart work fine, sleep restarts machine.
  • Updater works, not tried installing any security patches however.
EFI - yes, Vanilla kernel, not so sure - read at the forums that I should be using the voodoo kernel for this. Ethernet needs Realtek1000 patch for full functionality,

Audio needs a patch, didn't investigate because I use USB audio, seatbelt fix needed to fix image mount issue

GeForce 7900 GT 512MB Sonic Palit 1) Darwin bootloader detected only 256MB so I had to update ROM as described here (I didn't use the one from ROM repositoty because it differed a lot from the one I dumped from my video card, so I just changed 4 bytes myself according to the instruction).

2) After that OSX successfully booted with any of (and I guess any other) NVdarwin and NVinject (check that IOProbeScore is set to 0 in Info.plist) - had to do this step to be able to do the next one since I couldn't boot even in safe mode without injectors. You may stop here if you like, HW acceleration is already supported, but I like EFI way more, so here is the next step.

3) Used OSx86Tools to add EFI string and removed all injectors.
