HCL 10.5.8/Portables

From OSx86
Jump to: navigation, search
Mac OS X 10.5.8
Hardware Compatibility

This is a hardware compatibility list for portable computers. We want to keep it as accurate as possible, but please, do not entirely rely on this list when buying a portable computer. Don't forget to add how you got OSx86 running on your portable x86 computer, and to use proper English. Please see the discussion page for proper instructions on how to input your system specs. Also, please contribute to the HCL 10.5.8 page, which should list a more granular view of compatibility. If your computer isn't listed, you should try it if you have a SSE2 or higher processor. Use vanilla kernel if it is supported.

  • ONLY add hardware that you have TESTED. Don't add hardware just because you think it might work.
  • Please add hardware into tables.
  • This is for 10.5.8 builds only.

Please list your computers in alphabetical order by manufacturer (Asus, Acer, Dell, HP, etc)

For how to edit the Wiki, please see this thread. Thank you!

Note: Please add whether your device supports QE, Quartz Extreme, graphics. Try playing a movie with Quicktime Player.

You may need all or some of patches I have: ATIX1000.kext, RadeonHD.kext (newest one availible to stop mouse tearing), AC 883 patcher package, thats it! Also during installation and boot you need to boot using the cpus=1 option. A work around is to use a DSDT (http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=212950) and DSDTSE to install it! Afterwards you will have 2 cores instead of 1.

QE

Install Method: iPC (10.5.6) using Vanilla kernel (make sure you have an external display connected) Patches/Drivers - On install CD: Intel GMA950 (enables laptop display), Intel ICHx, Seatbelt, Shutdown/Restart, PS2 Support (required for keyboard and touchpad), SMBios (DDR2 667MHz) From internet: VoodooBattery.kext + PowerManagement.bundle, VoodooHDA.kext (Sleep breaks - even with the new versions), ApplePS2Trackpad (bash based patch) (sleep breaks this also), Realtek RTL8187B driver and software (I switched cards as the Dell one wouldn't work reliably) and a version of mach_kernel for Latitude D620s. I have the Novatel HSDPA drivers too, but after much info.plist tinkering cannot get this to work - please amend this if you have got it to work.

I then updated using the ComboUpdate, which broke the graphics, so after that install I reloaded the iPC DVD and deselected the Core Components and just reinstalled the GMA950 driver.

[edit] iDeneb 10.5.8 combo

Installation is relatively straightforward. Make sure you go in the appropriate subfolder and install the combo, not the delta and not the tools. Follow these instructions exactly as they are in the same order.

However, your graphics card drivers will be borked. Make sure you first backup /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext to your documents. Restore it after iDeneb BEFORE anything else by entering voodoo -s at boot (if you're not taken to single-user mode (terminal), enter it again when your computer reboots). Then enter sudo su. Enter the command that you see on your screen that says to modify files (this mounts your disk). Then enter these commands:

rm -R /system/Library/extensions/AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext
cp -R /Users/your-username here/Documents/AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext /System/Library/Extensions
chmod -R 755 /system/library/extensions/AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext
chown -R root:wheel /system/library/extensions/AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext
kextcache -k /System/Library/Extensions
reboot

Some permissions will be broken. Run Disk Utility (off iPC install DVD) and run Repair Permissions.

You will need to boot first time using this command line: voodoo -v -f -x (this might not work the first time you enter it, make sure it boots you into safe mode, if it reboots your computer, enter it again). Once in safe mood, click restart at login. This will update your boot caches

Default kernel is the vanilla kernel. When booting, you need to, instead of pressing enter, type in the bootloader this: voodoo

To change default kernel, edit /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist with some text editor (e.g. from terminal using nano /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist), and change "mach_kernel" into "voodoo" (then press CTRL-O if using nano).

Have fun!

Note: If you experience crashing you may need to update your seatbelt.kext

Completed install by using a "boot-132 Boot SL v3 wifi" disk and then selecting the 10.5.8 volume created with iDeneb 1.6 Lite.

Once you get to the OS X desktop use Software Update to install all the updates from Apple. Install "Dell Inspiron 1525 DSDT.aml" to root directory Install "Chameleon 2.0 RC5 Revision 619" Next install "GMA965 + X3100V1.zip" package (search kexts.com for "GMA 965 + X3100 Quartz Extreme") to enable Core Image/Quartz extreme.

Everything is working now except waking from Sleep.

This will install 10.5.5. Go ahead and go through the configuration that comes with the fresh install of OS X. Copy over the kexts listed below, along with KextHelper to your desktop. Then, go to software update (unless you have a different wifi card installed that works, you will have to use ethernet) and download the 10.5.8 combo update. Install it. It should boot up. If not on the first try, try rebooting a few more times. I have found that if it doesn't boot up, that if I boot with -v it will. Make sure to give it plenty of time though. Until all the kexts are installed, it takes a while to boot. If you turn it on after upgrading to 10.5.8, and you get a Kernel Panic saying that "The driver for this platform couldn't be loaded: ACPI" (Not the exact wording but something along those lines), then you should load the iAtkos 5i into the computer (still boot with the extra monitor/paperclip trick and -v -x in boot options) and go through the install process. However, all you should select is the options under the OSx86 Patches, and nothing else. This should resolve it. However, sometimes that has been extremely problematic, and I have had to reinstall.

Before you start this next part, make sure to read this, it will help. To install a kext, open the Kext Folder, and then open the folder with the kext(s) you want to install. Then drag it to the window in kext helper. Type in your password, hit easy install, wait and reboot. As a tip, before you install any kext, look in /System/Library/Extentions and see if there is one called that there. If so, delete it first. I have had much better luck this way.

After you booted up, you will need to open kexthelper, and install all the kexts except the one's in the following folders: System kext, and Sleep kext. Boot back up.

Next, delete system.kext from /System/Library/Extentions. Then install it. Reboot. Try plugging in a flash drive. That is what this should fix, without this kext, flashdrives wont be picked up. (So if you need to put anything on the computer before you do this, like the kexts, do it while 10.5.5 is installed, before the upgrade.)

This last kext is simple to install, just sometimes it KP's if I don't save it until last. Just drag it to kext helper and install. Reboot. To sleep, hit the power button and hit sleep. It does all sorts of stuff if you just close it, so make sure to manually put it in sleep first.

This should leave you with a fully operating system (Well for the most part. Read my list below for details). If not, google, and you can probably get it resolved. Best of luck. And, I have been at the stage of struggling with this, but just be patient, and you can figure it out.

Hardware List with notes:

  • CPU: 1.7 GHz Intel Pentium M 735 (Not at all related to Hackintoshing, but if you have this laptop, I recommend looking up pinmodding to over clock you CPU if it is a good idea. I got my 1.7 GHz cpu to OC to 2.26 GHz very easily. Also, this makes RAM that was at 400MHz go to 533MHz)
  • Graphics:Graphic card: Intel i915 (GMA900) - Works with above directions. Has small artifacts from time to time, nothing unbearable.
  • RAM: 2 GB DDR2 533MHz (once again with pinmod, but if I unmod it, it also runs at 400MHz)
  • Hard Drive: 320 GB WD IDE: Works with above directions.
  • CD/DVD: Works with above directions. Reads/Writes CD's, Reads DVD's, untested writing of DVD's
  • LAN: Works with above directions.
  • Firewire: Never used it.
  • SD card reader: Unsure, I will try to test and tell you all.
  • Keyboard/Trackpad/Multimedia: Work with above directions. No multitouch though. I am having a hard time installing VoodooPS2, which is how it was enabled by the other user.
  • Sound: Works with above directions.
  • Wireless: Intel 2915 a/b/g: there was some way I had it kind of working, but it really didn't so I temporarily used a PCMCIA one, but I just replaced it with a Dell Wireless 1450 that cost 10 dollars, and it works natively. I recommend buying one and replacing the original one.
  • Power: Sleep, mostly works, just have to hit sleep instead of closing it first. Restart, power off, and battery all work.

Please note: I have uploaded all the kexts you will need, plus kexthelper to help you install them. Download here: http://www.kexts.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=832. Also, I am having a hard time editing those files, so if you download it, and voodoopower is there, either just ignore it, or delete it. But it ended up giving me Kernel Panics.

  • Install Notes:

Needs paperclip dongle @ VGA out to correct blue screen problem. Remember to set speedstep technology to off in BIOS. Audio only has line out = no headphone support. Also mute light turns on and off (randomly?). Sleep powers down HDD/screen but CPU fan still running. Initially shutdown & restart work but installing IOPCMCIAFamily breaks restart but fixes 6 minute boot time to 30 secs (shutdown unharmed). Shutdown/Restart fix does not help. Add display to menu bar through preferences > display right click display icon and "detect displays" every time you log in (faster than running a script). Color profile fixed when using color calibrator assistant in expert mode with "allow other users use profile" box check near end of setup with a different name than the factory default profile (I used "Calibrated"). Display color profile now correct (Adobe RGB).

  • Special WiFi Notes:

When first booting (after successful install) go to preferences > network > select airport from the pane on the left and click assist me at bottom. Use assistant and go through it. Try to go through it as fast as you can. At the end it should ask if you would like to diagnose (connection still trying to connect but will) diagnose it anyways and save your router pass w/ the keychain and quit.

Important do not add your router to the preferred networks list under advanced also un-check "remember any network this computer has joined"

You can now select your router from the list of available networks from the network icon in the menu bar (faster than diagnosing the problem every time or going through prompt). If WiFi blue light not on, restart on Windows partition turn it on then restart into OSX

NOTE* Powermanagement package on iPC DVD breaks for some reason this WiFi fix.

  • Temperature/Fan Fix?

Fan would idle low and run very high RPM (very loud) when CPU ran hot.

Attempted to fix by deleting AppleCPUThermo.kext from extensions folder. No difference in result (probably wasn't loaded). Attempt #2 I installed cpu 1 fix & ACPI fix (from iPC DVD) and it seemed to help with fan cooling.

  • WARNING

UPDATE - I've come to the conclusion that the selection of power management requires testing. Over the years of using Leopard I've had my AC/DC adapter die twice. The culprit being my OS X partition. The computer ran hotter (to the touch) than my Windows partition. The AC/DC adapter was extremely hot (to the touch) and ended up being damaged by the excessive heat. The second adapter's plastic casing began to warp/melt and release toxic fumes. Replacement of the adapter fixed the problem but would only die again with time from usage of the OS X partition. Unfortunately the HP nc6120 ran best under Tiger OS X 10.4.x. Proceed at your own discretion.

UPDATE the powermanagement is fixed by installing this:http://apple2pc.blogspot.com/2008/06/power-management-on-1053.html

Intel wireless will not work, so I first purchases Atheros card for Lenovo off of Ebay fo $20.00 and installed. used iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Universal, used the Intel 950 video driver, Audio - checked Azalia Audio, Wifi (Atheros) full working -checked IO80211family.kext(10.4), PS2 Keyboard Fix, Power Management checked Clamshell Display Support & AppleACPIBatteryManagement - after install delete /System/Library/Extensions/AppleLPC.kext - then I went to netkas.org and downloaded and installed Disabler.kext and dsmos.kext - and then ran apple update - instructions can be found here http://netkas.org/?cat=9. After reboot you will just get a blue screen, you will need to re-install a number of kexts from a backup you took prior to the upgrade or fro the IPC disk, re-install GMA 950 kext to get video working, re-install 1080211 family kext for wireless, and re-install Azilla Audio as well as delete appleHDA.kext to get sound working
