Mac OS X 10.5.8 Hardware Compatibility

This is a hardware compatibility list for 10.5.8 builds. Don't forget to add how you got OSx86 running on your portable x86 computer, and to use proper English. Please see the discussion page for proper instructions on how to input your system specs. Also, please contribute to the HCL 10.5.1 page, which should list a more granular view of compatibility. If your computer isn't listed, you should try it if you have a SSE2 or higher processor. Kernels are available for most configured machines.

See the x86 software page for programs you can run without Rosetta.

Please list your computers in alphabetical order by manufacturer (Asus, Acer, Dell, HP, etc) .

For how to edit the Wiki, please see this thread. Thank you! .

[edit] iDeneb 10.5.8 combo

Installation is relatively straightforward. Make sure you go in the appropriate subfolder and install the combo, not the delta and not the tools. Follow these instructions exactly as they are in the same order.

However, your graphics card drivers will be borked. Make sure you first backup /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext to your documents. Restore it after iDeneb BEFORE anything else by entering voodoo -s at boot (if you're not taken to single-user mode (terminal), enter it again when your computer reboots). Then enter sudo su. Enter the command that you see on your screen that says to modify files (this mounts your disk). Then enter these commands:

rm -R /system/Library/extensions/AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext

cp -R /Users/your-username here/Documents/AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext /System/Library/Extensions

chmod -R 755 /system/library/extensions/AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext

chown -R root:wheel /system/library/extensions/AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext

kextcache -k /System/Library/Extensions

reboot

Some permissions will be broken. Run Disk Utility (off iPC install DVD) and run Repair Permissions.

You will need to boot first time using this command line: voodoo -v -f -x (this might not work the first time you enter it, make sure it boots you into safe mode, if it reboots your computer, enter it again). Once in safe mood, click restart at login. This will update your boot caches

Default kernel is the vanilla kernel. When booting, you need to, instead of pressing enter, type in the bootloader this: voodoo

To change default kernel, edit /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist with some text editor (e.g. from terminal using nano /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist), and change "mach_kernel" into "voodoo" (then press CTRL-O if using nano).

Have fun! . .

  • Video: nVidia Geforce 8600m GT - QE/CI/OpenGL/Resolution Switching/Dual Display work with NVinject.kext NVinstallerv 1.52(choose Vanilla) (Dual Display requires this NVCAP: BAAAAAAAAQAGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA= ; switches external monitor to primary display, but no big deal) (EFI Strings didn't work for some reason)
  • Sound: SigmaTel 9205: SPDIF out; Speakers; Volume Buttons; and Line-In work with HDAPathcer 1.20 and Linux Codec Dumps.
  • Keyboard and Trackpad: Work in 10.5.4 with ApplePS2Controller.kext; Work in 10.5.8 with VoodooPS2Controller.kext (2 finger scrolling works horizontal and vertical)
  • Ethernet: Broadcom 440x: works with Broadcom440x installer package from iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Universal PPF5 (Final).
  • WiFi: Dell 1397(Broadcom): Works with unmodifed drivers.
  • Bluetooth: Works with unmodifed drivers
  • WebCam: OmniVision Technologies: Works OOB
  • Fan: (The secret OSX86 Laptop nightmare) Amazingly enough, works with AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext (Idle Temp ~50C Both Cores Loaded 100% ~73C, same temps as Windows)(GPU Cooled by same fan)
  • Power Management: Screen Dims on Power Cord removal; Reporting 4 Hours 16 Mins @ 96% Charge (9 Cell)
  • Firewire: Recognized by System, but untested.
  • ExpressCard Slot: Untested.
  • Media Card Reader: Untested.
  • Sleep: Untested.
  • Modem: Not Recognized by System. (but who cares)
  • Shutdown/Restart: Do NOT work after installing Graphics Drivers. The system will power down, but remain on until the power button is held for 6 seconds.

Bottom Line: If you are looking for a great MacBook Pro replacement and don't mind the shutdown/restart bug, this is defiantly for you. When you consider the hidden issues with other models (Video, Sound, an especially cooling), this is a solid performer; with almost equal hardware to a MB Pro. Got mine from Dell as a Refurbished unit in great shape for cheap and a 1 year warranty. How can you go wrong?! . .

Intel wireless will not work, so I first purchases Atheros card for Lenovo off of Ebay fo $20.00 and installed. used iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Universal, used the Intel 950 video driver, Audio - checked Azalia Audio, Wifi (Atheros) full working -checked IO80211family.kext(10.4), PS2 Keyboard Fix, Power Management checked Clamshell Display Support & AppleACPIBatteryManagement - after install delete /System/Library/Extensions/AppleLPC.kext - then I went to netkas.org and downloaded and installed Disabler.kext and dsmos.kext - and then ran apple update - instructions can be found here http://netkas.org/?cat=9. After reboot you will just get a blue screen, you will need to re-install a number of kexts from a backup you took prior to the upgrade or fro the IPC disk, re-install GMA 950 kext to get video working, re-install 1080211 family kext for wireless, and re-install Azilla Audio as well as delete appleHDA.kext to get sound working
