HCL 10.6.0/Portables

From OSx86
Jump to: navigation, search
Mac OS X 10.6.0
Hardware Compatibility

This is a hardware compatibility list for portable computers. We want to keep it as accurate as possible, but please, do not entirely rely on this list when buying a portable computer. Don't forget to add how you got OSx86 running on your portable x86 computer, and to use proper English. Please see the discussion page for proper instructions on how to input your system specs. Also, please contribute to the HCL 10.6.0 page, which should list a more granular view of compatibility. If your computer isn't listed, you should try it if you have a SSE2 or higher processor. Use vanilla kernel if it is supported.

  • ONLY add hardware that you have TESTED. Don't add hardware just because you think it might work.
  • Please add hardware into tables.
  • This is for 10.6.0 builds only.

Please list your computers in alphabetical order by manufacturer (Asus, Acer, Dell, HP, etc)

For how to edit the Wiki, please see this thread. Thank you!

Note: Please add whether your device supports QE, Quartz Extreme, graphics. Try playing a movie with Quicktime Player.

Used this tutorial: [6]

Empire Efi and retail dualboot Windows 7

confirmed that 10.6.2 update works

  • You need AppleHDA to get sound work.

Then also the sound plugs works.

  • All works in 32bits except wifi, and Build in Mic.
  • in 64 bits mode you need to install x3100 64 bits drivers, and then Lan also don't work

Specs:

  • AMD Athlon II X2 M300 2.0GHz Dual-Core
  • 4GB DDR2 800MHz RAM
  • 1.3MP Webcam
  • DVD SuperDrive
  • HDMI port
  • 9-in-1 card reader
  • ATI Radeon HD 4200 256MB (Dong's Framebuffer)
  • Conextant HD Audio (AzaliaAudio)
  • Install method: I used the retail Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD and booted it from EmpireEFI. Did a normal install, and you will get an error at the end saying that the installation failed. Just reboot and start Smow Leopard from EmpireEFI again. For the bootloader, myHack would make the keyboard and mouse stop working, but MultiBeast seems to work. You can do a normal update to 10.6.3, after that, you need to download kernels and stuff.
  • Dong's Framebuffer for full resolution Download
  • Wireless is detected as Airport Extreme
  • AzaliaAudio for sound Download
  • Ethernet and Wireless ports work
  • HDMI Works after Dong's Framebuffer
  • 4GB of RAM in x64 Snow Leopard
  • Bootloader and full 4GB RAM MultiBeast Download

  • Graphics set to 1024x768 and no QE, no kext for intel 4500MHD otherwise everything works great for triple boot

[edit] Gateway MD7818u Laptop

  • Used the "Iboot Supported + Multibeast" method. Installed from a USB hard drive. Booted into the USB installer with the "Iboot-Supported" CD I burned.
  • In the USB installer, I replaced the OSInstall.mpkg file in /System/Installation/Packages/ with http://osx86.sojugarden.com/files/MBROSInstallMOD/OSInstall.mpkg.10.6.3.zip and replaced the OSInstall file in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Frameworks/OSInstall.framework/Versions/A/ with http://osx86.sojugarden.com/files/MBROSInstallMOD/OSInstall.Framework.10.6.zip to install on a dual boot configuration with a MBR formatted disk.
  • Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.0 Retail Install followed by the 10.6.4 combo update.
  • Ran Multibeast to install "Easybeast for Supported CPU." In Multibeast, I also checked the boxes for VooDooHDA 0.2.2 for the 82801i ICH9 Intel HDA audio, and the VooDoo PS/2 controller with Trackpad Support so I didn't have to use a USB keyboard and USB mouse.
  • Switched out my Intel Link 5100 802.11a/g/Draft-N Wireless for a Broadcom 1390 mini pci card and the Broadcom card worked out of the box.
  • Didn't get my Marvell Ethernet working yet.
  • Webcam works out of the box but no internal microphone functionality yet.
  • Graphics set to 1024x768 and no QE for intel 4500MHD. Your system might become unstable but you might have a chance at the full 1366x768 resolution with this file http://www.kexts.com/view/92-driver_voor_intel_gma4500.html
  • Brightness adjustment is non-existent.
  • HDMI port not working as of yet.
  • USB ports all work out of the box but the SD card reader doesn't do anything as of yet.
  • Had to install the VooDoo battery kext from here http://www.kexts.com/view/192-voodoo_battery.html to get the battery status to show up in the menu bar.

  • Modded BIOS supposedly fixes ACPI problems. Download it here: [8]

Note from MoonDogg (author of Guide) : Battery Meter & Power management works fine. Fn Keys can be made to work but I have no use for them so I did not include it in my guide. I also have never used the modified bios and do not know what it will do to your machine. (you have been warned!!)

  • Important Notes: You must have a working OS X Install. If you want to get it working, you must first restore the Retail DVD to a Hard Drive (WHICH ONE??--Essentially, this setup method needs 3 hard drives: one that already has OS X installed on it; one that is blank and for extracting the contents of the install DVD and one that will be the finished snow leopard installation. restore the DVD to a spare hard drive (which will wipe all its contents) that you will use to modify the install DVD - not the one you will end up installing snow leopard onto)and than use modified OSInstall.mpkg (WHARE TO GET THAT??-if your drive is set to boot from MBR and not GUID, you need a modified installation package which can be had here., if not, go to the os x install dvd and type Command+Shift+G and paste "/System/Installation/Packages/ and run OSInstall.mpkg")to Install it. After that, just install Boot Think 3.2. Copy the DSDT.aml file to the /Darwin Folder. Before you boot it, you must first install the drivers like FakeSMC.kext, NullCPUPowerManagement.kext, OpenHaltRestart.kext, PlatformUUID.kext, SleepEnabler.kext, IOAHCIBlockStorageInject.kext.

  • Install Method: iAtkos S3 V2 first, and 10.6.4 ComboUpdate from Apple later. Update: Idem to 10.6.5
  • OsX Version : 10.6.4 - Kernel 10.4.0. I'm currently running 10.6.4 in 64 bit mode, but some features from 10.6.3 at 32 bits were lost. Update: I'm currently runing 10.6.5 at 32 bit mode (I don't even remember what's the state of my installation or how it behaves at 64 bit)
  • CPU: Intel Pentium Core 2 Duo 6400
  • Graphic card: Intel GMA X3100. QE supported while in 10.6.3 at 32 bit mode. I'm not sure if it can be supported on 10.6.4. I have to downgrade kexts to stock ones from 10.6.2 to gain some kind of support for this card in 64 bits mode. Update: I'm runing 10.6.5 with QE Suported, at 32 bits.
  • RAM: 4GB
  • Hard disk: 250GB
  • DVD-RW : Works out of the box.
  • LAN : I don't know / I didn't try to install this, buy I think the iAtkos DVD has the drivers. Update: I still don't have this working on 10.6.5, after some attempts whith the iAtkos drivers.
  • Firewire : I don't know / I don't have firewire gadgets to try.
  • Keyboard/Trackpad/Multimedia front key: Full Working using VoodooPS2 Controller on 10.6.3. When upgraded to 10.6.4 the trackpad stop working. Update: At 10.6.5 everything is working OK.
  • Sound : Works out of the box. VoodooHDA
  • Wireless : Works out of the box installing the wireless drivers Broadcom that came with iAtkos.
  • Bluetooth : Works out of the box (or at least it seems to be, I didn't test it against anything yet)/
  • Card Reader : I don't know... when I get a SD card I'll be back to post about it. Update: doesn't seem to be working. Update 2: It works... sometimes.
  • My original install configuration for 10.6.3 (i only mention what I leave checked... anything else was unchecked in my case):
    • Bootloader
      • Chamaleon v2 RC4
    • Bootloader Option
      • 32 bit boot
    • Patches
      • Extra Directory
      • fakesmc
      • Disabler
      • RTC
        • RTC (32 bit)
      • EVO Reboot
    • Drivers
      • Main Hardware
        • Sata/IDE
          • AHCI Sata
        • Sound
          • Vodoo HDA
        • PS/2
          • Voodo PS/2
        • Laptop Hardware
          • Battery
          • Card Reader
  • I post-installed this going to /System/Installation/Packages on the Install DVD later:
    • Drivers
      • Main Hardware
        • NTFS-3G
          • Mac Fuse Core
          • NTFS-3G
  • I also added to /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist, under Kernel Flags, the "pmVersion=20" config, when upgrading to 10.6.4. I'm not sure if it is really necessary (I didn't test it without it yet). I have a lot to test yet!
  • Some extra notes: I never managed (never attempted actually) to make it work the hibernation / suspend modes... so I just turn on/off the machine when I need it. The battery cycles doesn't seem to be working, but I think it is because the battery itself doesn't have the necessary for this (is not a software issue, I think). Sometimes (actually, in very rare occasions) the machine has a kernel panic on boot. Just force shut-down and turn it on again always solves the problem. On even more rare ocassions (maybe four or five times in a year) the machine gets frozen and I have to force shut down, which always solves the problem. In fact, actually is not frozen really, it seem the keyboard and keypad stops working (I discover this one time when this "hang" happened while air mouse was running, and this allowed to perform a clean shutdown normally.)

Everything works in just 45minutes installation. What you need is a Mac, a 8GB USB Stick, and this awesome Tutorial [15] It worked fine for me with some small changes. I had to delete VoodooPS2 out of the Boot/Extra on the USB because it caused a Kernel Panic, later on it isn't a Problem to Install it. And Sleep Enabler had to be deleted from every pint (Boot/Extra, Post-Install/Extra and Extensions) because it causes a Kernel Panic when you Update to 10.6.3. Except this everything worked fine for me, even Sleep Enabler wasn't necessary.

[edit] Install Method

  • Boot and install from SnowLeo OS X86 DVD(from The Pirate Bay) - No problems booting, hanging, etc.

[edit] Additional KEXTS

  • VoodooHDA
  • Apple PS/2 v2 - Voodoo PS/2 DOES NOT WORK AT ALL, only Apple PS/2 v2 gives you control over the cursor speed in SYS. PREFS.
  • Realtek RTL8169 Ethernet
  • Voodoo Battery Monitor
  • Apple Battery Monitor
  • Intel GMA 4500 KEXT, get from [25] - without this your stuck with 1024x768x32

[edit] Kernel Recommendations

  • Chocolate is your best bet, MACH panics consistently when doing stuff like messing around in PhotoBooth

[edit] What Works

  • With Chocolate Kernel, no problems booting, hanging, anything. Using standard MACH, you need to use -x -f on first boot after installing, but its ok on its own after that.
  • Internal Ethernet works perfectly
  • Video works well, after installing the Intel GMA 4500 KEXT, you will get a decent range of resolutions, 640x480 up to 1366x768.
  • QuartzGL works after being enabled in OSX86TOOLS
  • Audio works 100%
  • As far as I can tell, SnowLeo runs in 64bit mode by default on this machine.

[edit] What Needs More Attention

  • No WIFI, cant find an Atheros KEXT that works - get a USB WIFI card, close enough
  • Cant use touchpad to tap or click, only button

  • Multibeast 3.1.1, EasyBeast installation using Chimera bootloader v1.4.1 r877
  • Followed this guide http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evdxoJ5M6TY

Things that worked OOTB

  • Graphics: nVidia NVS3100M worked OOTB, with full 1920x1080 resolution and in 32 bit colour.
  • Built-in sound and internal mic worked OOTB.
  • Webcam worked OOTB.
  • Keyboard light (Fn+PgUp) worked OOTB.
  • PCI ExpressCard slot works OOTB. It detects my TI chipset FireWire ExpressCard, which works fine.
  • On-board Ricoh FireWire appears to work OOTB, but I haven't connected any devices to it to test it fully.
  • SATA connections to the hard disk & DVD drive work OOTB.
  • All USB2 ports, inc the USB function of the eSATA port, worked OOTB.
  • Restarting the computer usually works fine, but occasionally a kernel panic occurs.

Things that worked with additional kexts

  • Ethernet worked with IntelE1000e.kext
  • Proper battery monitoring worked with VoodooBattery.kext
  • Trackpad and keyboard work with Voodoo PS/2 Controller and Voodoo PS/2 Trackpad kexts. Trackpad works as a multitouch input device. IMPORTANT: Install these when running Multibeast for the first time, else you won't have a working keyboard or mouse after you reboot; I had to temporarily use a USB keyboard & mouse to sort this out.

Things that don't work

  • UPEK fingerprint reader is supported, but when the software tries to read my fingerprints it hangs after the first swipe. http://www.upek.com/solutions/mac/default.asp
  • Intel Centrino 6200 Wi-Fi didn't work (but I don't expect it to, there is no kext for it)
  • The computer won't shut down properly. The OS shuts down, the screen is switched off, but the CPU fan still spins.
  • Can't get the built-in Ricoh SDHC card reader to work. Tried VoodooSDHC without success.
  • The computer doesn't enter sleep mode when I close the lid.
  • The eSATA port doesn't seem to have been detected, but it does work as a USB port.
  • Trackpoint doesn't work (the little red button in the middle of the keyboard, and the 3 mouse buttons between the keyboard and the trackpad)

Not tested

  • Bluetooth
  • Modem
  • Intel SpeedStep

  • CPU: Intel Dual Core T2400 @ 1.83GHz
  • Graphics: Intel Integrated 945GM

Followed installation guide located: here. Had a previous install of leopard 10.5.7 which I used to install to a drive connected via USB by the use of a SATA <-> USB bridge ($10, at most).

I have created azip archive containing all of the kernel extensions, tools, etc that I used during the installation which can be obtained here. Ensure that you are using a Thinkpad T60 model 1952-AP2 before copying com.apple.boot.plist - it has the EFI string for intel's integrated 945GM graphics; if you have a discrete solution, you will need to provide your own string.

  • Follow the guide, using the contents of the archive instead of the files linked in the article.
  • Use Chameleon RC3 instead of the version listed.
  • Use the copy of com.apple.boot.plist provided for the graphics to work out of the box.
  • Install the battery and ps2fix packages to your installation drive (located in the kext sub-directory).
  • Do ensure that permissions are properly set before booting; modal boxes declaring that the kernel extensions are invalid and need updating will appear if they are not.

Nota Bene: When installing via this method, you may find that you are unable to repair disk permissions within snow leopard - this problem presents itself when installing Snow Leopard onto a drive from within a Leopard installation. Either install Snow Leopard from within another Snow Leopard installation, or re-install BSD subsystem. This method has proven itself on a preliminary installation of Snow Leopard on a spare hard drive.

When Snow Leopard boots up successfully, download the latest VoodooPS2 with trackpad kexts (aside from the kext, you should also download the VoodooPS2packageprefpane), install the KEXTS ONLY using kext helper, and DO NOT FORGET TO DELETE APPLEACPIPS2NUB and APPLEPS2 kexts inside System/Library/Extensions (if you don't delete them, you'll get kernel panic). Restart and boot with -v and -f flags. Install the voodooprefpane, should now work.

"dsmos has arrived" doesn't matter since my gfx isn't supported.
