HCL 10.6.3/Portables
|
This is a hardware compatibility list for portable computers. We want to keep it as accurate as possible, but please, do not entirely rely on this list when buying a portable computer. Don't forget to add how you got OSx86 running on your portable x86 computer, and to use proper English. Please see the discussion page for proper instructions on how to input your system specs. Also, please contribute to the HCL 10.6.3 page, which should list a more granular view of compatibility. If your computer isn't listed, you should try it if you have a SSE2 or higher processor. Use vanilla kernel if it is supported.
- ONLY add hardware that you have TESTED. Don't add hardware just because you think it might work.
- Please add hardware into tables.
- This is for 10.6.3 builds only.
Please list your computers in alphabetical order by manufacturer (Asus, Acer, Dell, HP, etc)
For how to edit the Wiki, please see this thread. Thank you!

[edit] Setup Notes
I don't know if it was my USB drive, or an issue with the installer, but I kept getting a kernel panic when booting installer. I installed Chameleon 2.0 on a thumb drive and just used that as a boot device, selecting my other USB drive as the boot drive and it loaded perfectly. Also needed to use a thumbdrive with the Chameleon 2.0 RC1 installed on it to get the system out of the reboot loop.

[edit] G60JX "Republic of Gamers"
- Mine is the Best Buy model (I only mention this because I believe other G60JXs have slightly different H/W).
- This laptop requires the MacBook Pro Software Update 1.3.
- Don't forget that SL requires GPT.
- Install Method: Install from working OSX install. Or kickstart install using Empire EFI boot disc v 1.085 R2 ("Experimental Support for ... Core i5-M , Core i3-M , Core i7M"). 1st boot using Empire. Install 10.6.3 Combo Update if installing from earlier. Once running 10.6.3, edit SystemVersion.plist as described here, then install MacBook Pro Software Update 1.3. Install bootloader and kexts. Edit DSDT: HPET fix (no more NullCPUPM!), SBRG/LPCB Lower temperatures hack, FN button hack. "MacBookPro6,1" in smbios.plist (helps with PM). In c.a.B.plist: "GraphicsEnabler"="Yes" (native NV 360M support) and "system-type"="2" (more PM, identifies system as a laptop). Many of the necessary kexts can be found here.
- Bootloader: AsereBLN_v1.1.9
- Kernel: Vanilla 10.3.1 in 32-Bit Mode, 64 also works, with the exception of PS2 keyboard and trackpad (32-bit only driver). Small interjection: iATKOS S3 somehow works in 64-bit mode with trackpad and keyboard; yet to find out how.
- Kexts: AppleACPIPS2Nub for use with meklort's ApplePS2; meklort's ApplePS2Controller/Pref pane - same link (32-bit only :( ); iats AtherosL1cEthernet; netkas' fakesmc; VoodooBattery; slice/AutumnRain's VoodooHDA 2.61 (Voodoo project's voodoohdahelper also needed, to save settings).
- Issues: Sleep. HDMI audio. S/PDIF. Sound device names require Info.plist edit; jack sense works OOB. With AsusHotkeys.kext, all but keyboard backlight controls work. Cardreader needs additional kext available from here.
- Other: Full PCI-ID list here. More detailed install guide here.

[edit] EEE PC 1000HE
Install Method: Install 10.6.0 (also works for 10.6.1) using the method here: [11]. Since Windows 7 was installed before Snow Leopard this particular instance with the intention of dual-booting, the osinstall.mpkg swap-out hack was performed, described here: [12]. Make a note of partition sizes. All parts bold in this section pertain to dual-booting. Since I never had any luck with NetbookInstaller, I did everything that it did manually (dropping KEXTs that worked in the Extra/Extensions folder, building the Extensions.mkext with Kext Utility, editing the com.apple.boot.plist file with the edits mentioned in the table, dropped the Atom Mach Kernel in the root of the drive, assembled a patched DSDT (coming in a future bundle), and installed the latest version of Chameleon 2. The update to 10.6.2 went painlessly (just execute the update bundle [13]), the same went for 10.6.3 [14]. After installing and updating, your Windows boot will be messed up. To fix it, you will need a USB optical drive. Put your Windows 7 disk into the drive, boot from it, click through the wizard until it displays "Install Now". Instead of clicking that, click "Repair My Computer". It will scan for a Windows install and not find one (the one it's looking for is not on an "active partition"). Click through to get to the tools, then click on the Command Prompt link. Then, type out the codes in this sequence:
- Diskpart
- list disk
- select disk # (the number that matches the size of the internal hard drive, pretty much always 0, though I had it listed at 1 at one point)
- list partition
- select partition # (the partition you installed WINDOWS on)
- make active
That will make the Windows partition the bootable partition. After this, restart and boot from the optical drive again. Go through the wizard again and click on "Repair My Computer". This time, Windows will find the install on the hard drive and repair it. If it can't fix it once, reboot and do it again. It will get fixed. Anyway, after it's fixed; reboot again and boot from the optical drive. Get to the Command Prompt by the same process as I described above. Type out the same commands as above but make sure to select the MAC OS X partition and make it active. Then, reboot and boot from the hard drive. Hopefully you'll see the slightly-more-awesome Chameleon boot menu instead of that drab Windows boot menu.
| Part | Device | Working | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Processor | Intel Atom N280 Single Core Hyperthreaded | Yes | Speedstepping technology works as well! Make sure to use the kernel patched for the Atom series if you don't rely on NetbookInstaller to do it for you (this is listed as an unsupported device) |
| Chipset | Intel 945GSE | Yes | |
| SATA | Intel 945GSE | Yes | |
| Graphics | Intel GMA 950 | Yes | Native with Mac OS X - Native panel res (1024x600), full acceleration (QE), "GraphicsEnabler" Yes, GMA 950 string injection |
| Audio | Realtek HDA Controller / Realtek ALC663 HDA codec | Yes | Latest version of VoodooHDA.kext works. The microphone does not however, but I have no interest in using it. |
| Wireless | Atheros AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (b/g/n) | YES | Natively supported. The European model may differ as I heard they used a different network chip. |
| Ethernet | Atheros AR8131 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller | Yes | Attansic / Atheros L1C for Snow Leopard (AtherosL1cEthernet) |
| USB EHCI & UHCI | Intel 945GSE | Yes | Native support |
| Trackpad | Synaptics PS/2 Port Compatible TouchPad | Yes | Install VoodooPS2.kext before booting on the EEE for keyboard/trackpad support. Hotkeys will not work (except for brightness adjustment) |
| Webcam | Chicony CNF71297 (USB 2.0 1.3M UVC WebCam) | Yes | Native support |
| Battery | Integrated | Yes | |
| Card reader | Yes | Native support (even SDHC) |

Install iAtkos S3 V2 adding the following options:
- Bootloader Options
- Graphics Enabler
- -pci1
- Drivers
- Main Hardware
- SATA/IDE
- VIA SATA
- PS/2
- VoodooPS/2 or Apple PS/2 (whichever you prefer, though voodoo PS/2 supports two finger scrolling)
- SATA/IDE
- Main Hardware
You can experiment with different ATI drivers, but they never made a difference to me. Display works, but graphics performance isn't great, so I don't think it's properly hardware accelerated.
Whatever you do, DO NOT install any networking drivers, it may just be me but every time I install ethernet/wireless drivers it always leads to a crashy installation. Also for some reason if I boot in 32 bit mode, airport is still enabled and hence causes crashing, so you'll have to avoid 32 bit mode.
For internet I'm running a Realtek RTL8188SU, some drivers I've found have crashed in 64bit mode, but I found one that works in this thread which is apparently for the Airlink 101. When you plug the dongle in, for me it crashes if I try to use airport to do anything, so I have to connect to wireless networks and set up profiles etc using the Airlink utility.
Graphics Enabler and pci=1 seem to make graphics reasonably supported - ie Photo booth seems to working, whereas I got a black screen before hand. However I still have no joy with VLC and the like.
I've installed Flash player and tried browsing Flash content with a few browsers, safari and chrome seem to crash instantly, but Firefox seems to work OK.
Feel free to update to 10.6.5 using software update.
Not the best laptop for hackintosh, but it can be done!
After installation download RadeonHD.10.6.x.kext from insanelymac forum http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=190586. Install it with Kext Utility, reboot with flag -f (for sure). I've got my resolution working (1280x800) and my video card recognized as ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 (not 3470), but was problem with cursor. Just follow instructions on previous linked page - "In RadeonHD.kext/Contents/Info.plist, set "EnableHardWareCursor" to false. Rebuild the kernel cache and reboot." Resolution works for me only when I boot from flash drive when I have installed Chameleon RC5 bootloader, if I boot from HDD it doesn't work and have some issues with wi-fi.
Safe updated to 10.6.6 with software update. But after safari sometimes hangs up.

Install using iAtkos S3 V2 adding the following options:
Used similar options as for F5SL.
YOU CAN USE SOFTWARE UPDATE FOR EVERYTHING (INCLUDING TO 10.6.5) EXCEPT ITUNES. FOR SOME REASON WHICH I HAVEN'T WORKED OUT WHY YET, ITUNES 10.1.1 STOPS SNOW LEOPARD FROM BOOTING. SO DON'T UPDATE IT UNLESS YOU KNOW HOW TO FIX IT.

It took me a couple of times to get the installation to go through completely. When I did get iAtkos 10.6.3 v2 dvd to go through (install) completely, it said that it had failed. However When I rebooted the laptop it worked!!!!!!!! Thus I suggest making sure to burn the install disc at a very low speed
WORKING:
- nVidia GT130M Video Card: (Full Resolution of 1920x1080 with QE/CI) (works with Graphics Enabler option and -pci1 option checked)

[edit] JoyBook A52
First actualised using Windows XP BIOS on that laptop to version 3.0.
Note: I didn't have DVD (destroyed) so used Plop Boot Manager on 1GB pendrive (this laptop only can boot from 1GB pendrive, and not all 1GB pendrives!!!). Then I booted installator from 16GB pendrive (to make usb installator you can for example use diskutility in mac os x. Restore downloaded installator image to usb pendrive and after that install chameleon 2. If installation of chameleon stops/stucks/no progress, try other versions of chameleon). To install Plop Boot MAnager: - delete every partitions from 1 GB pendrive. In unix/mac in terminal type: sudo dd if="name and localisation of plpbt.img file" of=/dev/diskN bs=1m, where N is number of 1GB pendrive. To check N in mac os x, type in terminal: diskutil list
- Install Method: iAtkos 10.6.3 - kernel originally installed, nothing modified
- Partition Scheme: Master Boot Record
- Processor: 2x 1,87GHz 2 cores works
- VGA: ATI Radeon Xpress 200M works Callisto_for_Snow_Leopard_10.6.2.pkg (resolution only!!! no QE)
- Sound: AppleAzalia kext
- LAN: works with Realtek 8139 pkg
- Wifi: Atheros AR5006EG not working (if found solution, tell me: xxxluzxxx@me.com)
- Powermanagement: VooDoo Battery 100% works
- USB 100% works
- PS/2 mouse and keyboard works with VoodooPS2 kext (mouse too fast), ApplePS2 (perfect!)
- Copy from installator AppleVIAATA.kext, and repair permisions. If not: "still waiting for root device".
If You use chameleon 2, delete any kexts for ATA/SATA suppoer from /Extra/Extensions and boot with -f flag for first time.

- Bluetooth : Works out of the box.
- Power management : Works, battery indicator works fine.
- ShutDown/Reboot : Shut down does NOT work. You have to hold the power button down to turn off.
- NOT WORKING PARTS : Original WiFi card, Card Reader
Installation= Pretty straightforward. Boot with iBoot, put SnowLeo DVD in, run through the disk utility, then install. It will say Installation failed, but just reboot it with the iBoot cd in. Choose the HD you just installed to, (putting in any boot options you want, I recommend GraphicsEnabler=Yes), let it boot up, run kext wizard for necessary kexts (you can actually google dell e6410 kexts and obtain them very easily). You will also need to install chimera to enable booting without the iBoot disc. Boom. You have a fully functional Dellbook Pro. I haven't tried doing the combo update to 6.8 so I am not entirely sure that will work. One side note: This hackintosh will ONLY WORK IF YOU HAVE THE NVIDIA NVS 3100M model. Otherwise, you are out of luck.
