OS X 10.6.6
Hardware Compatibility

This is a component level hardware compatibility list. We want to keep it as accurate as possible, but please, do not entirely rely on this list when buying hardware. Add which parts you have working in the categories listed below, or create a new category. Please keep alphabetical order inside the categories. The categories themselves are ordered by popularity. Please list any caveats or problems as well.

  • ONLY add hardware that you have TESTED. Don't add hardware just because you think it might work.
  • Please add hardware into tables.
  • This is for 10.6.6 builds only.

For how to edit the Wiki, please see this thread. Thank you!

Hardware Name Chipset Notes Patches Used 32/64bit working with patches
Asrock H55M/USB3

(www.alternate.de => No.: GUIR07)

Intel H55 Express
  • Used CPU: Intel Core i7-870 Prozessor (Boxed, FC-LGA4, "Lynnfield") => (www.alternate.de => No.: HU1I33)
  • after installing everything worked fine (only bootloader was missing ;-))
  • => but I was not sure if the Nvidia graphic card (Palit, 9400GT Super+1GB) worked correct and therefore I used MultiBeast to enable NVidia (and installing Bootloader). After doing that, network and sound doesn't work anymore. With Multibeast I enabled the network-card and sound-chip again. Now it works, but the Sound "knocks" sometimes if I start something to play. But if the Music is started there is no "knock" furthermore.
  • Hint: I used a big disk with 1.5 T to install Leopard. That worked, but the bootloader (chameleon) can't handle that! I needed to use a smaller partition.

Thanks to the developer(s) of:

Installation

  • Installed Hazard 10.6.1-6.2 and deleted the AppleTYMCE.driver.kext. Then updated via SU to 10.6.6, restarted into another working SL or Win 7 with MacDrive installed and again deleted the AppleTYMCE.driver.kext and the SleepEnabler.kext. Then restarted and everything worked. Since I installed the update to 10.6.5 my PC runs with the original Kernel of OSX and I can do every Update simply through software actualisation. Only thing I had to do for full resolution 1920x1080 was to install SwitchResX and manually set up my resolution. Now everything works absolutely great, incl QE/CI.

  • RAM: 4 GiB DDR2 1066 Kingston.
  • Install method: Hazard 10.6.6 (choose Chamaleon RC5, Nvidia_Upate, install without audio -don't choose AppleHDA here, it will insert noise in the audio-output- and, if you want, all Ethernet (LAN) drivers)
  • Patched BIOS (version 1005... try "BIOS for Mac OS X and all OS version" or "BIOS for Mac OS X, vista and all OS version")
  • Video: NVIDIA 8400 GS 512MB: works fine, but you must use a trick: when I wanted to use full resolution (1600x1280), due to sometimes it freezes the screen (blue background) and you have to press reset, before this I opened the terminal and taped "sudo shutdown -h +1", the screen was freezed, but after the minute: computer halted ;)
  • Restart + Shutdown works fine
  • Sleep works fine
  • USB: Working fine (but with included 2010.x Tuxera NTFS driver my 2-TB-NTFS USB-3.0 HDD didn't work (can't mount), then I updated to 2011.4 and works fine)
  • SATA (HDs & DVD-RW) works fine
  • Sound (Motherboard's included Realtek ALC1200): doesn't work without installing AppleHDA.kext (remember you have to choose in System Preferences the right output, it started by defult to hearphones :P ).
  • Firewire and eSATA not testednot tested
  • LAN (Motherboard's included Atheros LE1): works fine installing all drivers -I don't have much time for this- :( . If you have any problem, you can also use the drivers provided by iats (Atheros Ethernet Network Driver for Mac OS X) project (in Google Code)
  • Don't use default options in installer.
    • Graphics: Select only Nvidia_Upate (problems if you select more)
    • LAN: If you don't have time to try one-by-one, you can select (no problems doing it) all Ethernet Card drivers

(Used in sony Vaio laptop VPCF1 series)

Nvidia Geforce GT 425M (1 GB dedicated memory)
  • Intel 5 series motherboard
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-740QM Prozessor
  • To boot i had to use "busratio=12 cpus=8" to boot to hazard 10.6.6i, but after install it seemed to boot fine. I selected chamelion 2 RC5
  • => Graphics card currently doesnt fully work. Mac recognizes 32 mb vram, and says its a "gpu" rather than the card name in profiler. I have tried the official mac nvidia drivers for this card, to no avail. The computers first stick of ram is recognized but no others (2 GB) until i installed a kext to support intel 5 series motherboard. The sound (ALC 275) only worked after installing a modified VoodooHDA.kext to math my device and vender id's. Network card and wireless still have yet to work. My network card shows up after doing the normal Yuko2.kext hack by putting in dveice and vender id, but it still says cable unplugged, so im assuming it lacks methods to handle data from the card. USB (im not sure if 3.0 speed, but atleast 2.0) works after installing intel 5 series kext, but only after i deleted the extension.mkext cache in the cache folder.
  • Hint: when installing using hazard, make sure not to install ANY audio/graphics packages or any other kernel (vanilla kernel works on i7 natively) and install voodoo usb/ps2 and laptop fix to enabled trackpad and keyboard. Other packages for devices seemed to cause kernel panics. Networking kexts were fine though, i installed them all in case i needed to hook into them to get my card working. Use verbose mode when booting (-v) if you get a kernel panic to see where/what it stalls on.

  • Using MacPro3,1 plist, but GPU clocking still stutters badly on 2nd channel (VGA or HDMI).
  • Channel 1 (DVI) works fine, all smooth on 32-bit, on 64-bit need to sleep/wakeup screen, then OK.
  • No Rotation, resolutions work on DVI only, maybe bad efistring

  • EK/AU versions have the Atheros chipset, US versions Broadcom. This is for the Broadcom. It won't say on card so probe if unsure.
  • Works great with patch to plist file.
  • Got it up and running in 10.6.2. Every update since I have had to repatch as the IO80211Family kext gets overwritten. how to patch the file - edit the contents of info.plist in AppleAirPortBrcm4311.kext by adding <string>pci14e4,4329</string> between strings ending 4328 & 432b
  • This can be accomplished rather quickly through terminal, copy and paste

sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/ Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/ Contents/PlugIns/AppleAirPortBrcm4311.kext/ Contents/Info.plist

  • add the edit and save. run sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions in terminal, restart, go to system preferences/network and you will see your new AirPort card populate in the list of network connections.
