OS X 10.7.3
Hardware Compatibility

This is a component level hardware compatibility list. We want to keep it as accurate as possible, but please, do not entirely rely on this list when buying hardware. Add which parts you have working in the categories listed below, or create a new category. Please keep alphabetical order inside the categories. The categories themselves are ordered by popularity. Please list any caveats or problems as well.

  • ONLY add hardware that you have TESTED. Don't add hardware just because you think it might work.
  • Please add hardware into tables.
  • This is for 10.7.3 builds only.

For how to edit the Wiki, please see this thread. Thank you!

Hardware Name Chipset Notes Patches Used 32/64bit working with patches
MS-7591 V1.0 Intel x58 ICH10 System Specs:
  • Brand Name: Alienware
  • Motherboard: MS-7591 v1.0 from Alienware/Dell?
  • Bios: A11

  • Audio= ACL888
  • LAN/Ethernet= Broadcom BCM5784
    • device ID=14e4,1698
  • Wifi= Broadcom 1505 (it's a PCI card, NO usb)
    • device ID= 14e4,4328

System Config:

  • Model Name: Mac Pro
  • Model Identifier: MacPro5,1
  • Processor Speed: 2.67 GHz (I don't think all Threads are working only the 4 cores)

Component Status:

  • LAN/Ethernet works with patch
  • Audio works with patch
    • audio ALC888 worked out the box
  • Graphics NOW are working with drivers (No EFIstring). Dual Monitor full acceleration QE/CI
  • Sleep= Unknown

Installation Method:

    • Educational Purposes Only
    • No changes on Bios requiered besides set to AHCI
  • I used the Clean Retail method for both SL and Lion
  • Boot with chameleon
    • no flags requiered(u can use -v just to see what's going on).
      "GraphicsEnabler=Yes"
      • I tried a bunch of combinations before, BUT only messed up the booting process.
    • Install (format ur HDD for fresh isntallation)and boot with no flags again.
      • Audio should work out the box
      • WIFI Broadcom 1505 (14e4,4328) working out the box..LAN not working
      • Graphics card is dual pcb, but only 1 pcb was working. We'll use EFI string Later.
  • Download and install the combo update 10.6.6 (Do not restart)
    • I'm using 10.6.6 Combo Update in order to use the APP Store and upgrade to LION.
    • I got the graphics working with 10.6.8, BUT no LAN/Ethernet working so i couldn't use the App Store at all.
    • this is the important part. Check "EVOreboot" and "FakeSMC"
    • My wireless keyboard and mouse were recognize without any kexts
  • Fix the Graphics
    • I used this method Nvidia GTX 295 EFIpack 1.2 Method
    • Scroll down to "Instructions" and download the EFIpack 1.2
    • copy the "hex" string number after clicking on "DUAL PCB.." to your "org.chameleon.boot.plist"
      located in /Extra/org.chameleon.boot.plist
      • remember that u need to insert it like this

<key>device-properties</key>
<string>"your hex values or long # replaces this text and colons"</string>

  • Restart (if there is a GRAPHICS problem like black screen. try "GraphicsEnabler=Yes)
in extreme cases "arch=i386" or even extreme(r) "-x"
  • Now let's upgrade to LION yeah!
  • Sign in to your App Store (which apparently only cares about "en0) which mine at the time was the wifi.
  • Buy Lion (after FEB 2012) 10.7.3 is the default.
    • after booting to your partition "installer" (that the above guide makes you do).
You WIL loose the full acceleration and also the DVIs ports (Meaning only 1 pcb will be working).
I think this is due to LION is reading the PCI Roots of the GTX 295 in reverse order in comparison to SL.
Luckily, your HDMI still works so plug your monitor or TV there.
  • Install over your Snow Leopard partition and reboot normally (remember only HDMI works at this point)
  • Set up, you'll helpfully be on the LION screen and get ready for minor tweaks to get everything working
  • Install the latest CUDA Driver from Nvidia. I'm using 4.2.5 version
  • Install the latest driver from Nvidia "270.00.00.00f01"
or anything that supports GTX 285 or 2xx series (no necessary to downgrade)
  • I also downloaded this kexts from osx86
but I don't know if they were necessary.
(I deleted the originals .kext and .bundle from /S/L/E and then installed the new ones)
  • smbios.plist -->MacPro5,1 &
don't forget to check the last box at the end (for first time boot only.
It will move your kexts to /System/Library/Extentions)
  • Finally, DELETE your EFIstring from org.chameleon.boot.plist
    • I tried the "NVDA,Parent" method before
and got me working with the DVI (I Switched the PCI roots Values),
but I will not give you full acceleration QE/CI.

so just delete your efistring and add "GraphicsEnabler=Yes" to your boot.plist

    • if you get a weird KP. Add PCIRootUID=1 in extreme cases "npci=0x3000"
  • Getting LAN/Ethernet to work:
    • Download BCM5722D (edited for BCM5784) with ID 14e4,1698
(in SL and LION, The wifi was replacing the Ethernet ID..weird)
    • Install with kextBeast OR if u want more work, just add it to /S/L/E/IONetworkingFamiliy.kext/Content/Plugins/
      • otherwise u can just place it in /S/L/E/ (that's where i have it)
  • I try to use diff. options to make my audio work but only Voodooo will get me sound
but gets me a Kernel Panic. So I had to use "GraphicsEnabler=Yes" "PCIRootUID=1"
in extreme cases "npci=0x3000" to boot to the screen again.
  • RESTART!!!
  • You should be in the Lion screen now.
I can share some files if necessary to get Your Monster Alienware
and your Classic Monster GTX 295 to work. user "Cucho" on tonymacx86's website

  • Model Name: Mac Pro
  • Model Identifier: Mac Pro 3,1
  • CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E4500
  • GPU: ATI Radeon 6350(HP OEM)

Component Status:

  • Audio Works with patch
  • Ethernet Works with patch
  • Graphics Works with QE/CI
  • Dual Monitors using VGA and DVI from Single Video Card
  • Only Sleep does not work

Installation Guide: Default BIOS settings if installation freezes, Disable Legacy USB support

  1. Boot from DVD
  2. It will take 5-15 Minutes that you will be stock on the apple loading screen, but it will still load to the installation setup(Be Patient)
  3. Partition your Hard Disk in the Disk Utility
  4. Just Install the iAtkos OS X deselect other choices on the customization of your installation
  5. After login apply the necessary patches.
  • System Utilities(Repair Permissions)
  • Audio = VoodooHDA 0.2.1
  • Network = Realtek Gigabit Ethernet 2.0.6 for 10.7
  • Miscellaneous = PS/2 Keyboard & Mouse/Trackpads
  • OSx86 Software = Kext Utility

  1. Locate ATI5000Controller.kext and ATIRadeonX3000.kext from /System/Library/Extensions
  2. Open package content and edit the Contents/Info.plist for both ATI5000Controller.kext and ATIRadeonX3000.kext.
  3. Edit Info.plist(Need Admin privileges)
  4. find <key>IOPCIMatch</key><string>...</string> for both kexts
  5. insert 0x68f91002 inside the <string>...</string> ex.: <string>0x68f91002 ...</string>(note just insert it and do not modify the other strings. Apply step 3, 4, 5 for both kexts)
  6. then save the modified kexts.
  7. install them using Kext Utility.
  8. then Restart
  • Additional Note: I use iAtkos L2 so this patch works for 10.7.2 and 10.7.3

4Core1600P35-WiFi+ Intel® P35 + ICH9R System Configuration:
  • Model Name: Mac Pro
  • Model Identifier: Mac Pro 3,1
  • CPU: Intel Core2Duo 3Ghz E8400
  • GPU: nVidia G210 1gb Dual VGA/DVI
  • RAM: 8gb DDR3 1333
  • Audio: Intel HD Audio Built-in ALC870 [same as ALC889a]
  • Ethernet: Onboard Realtek RTL8111/8168B [10ec:8168]

Component Status:

  • Audio works using MultiBeast ALC8xxHDA & AppleHDA Rollback & ALC885/889a Non-DSDT HDAEnabler [1]
  • Ethernet works with kext [2], however I could not get this to work as Built-in Ethernet which is required for App Store and iCloud to operate correctly. I had to add a separate Network Card (RTL8139 in this case) which was detected as Built-in Ethernet. I actually use the onboard network card as I have found the RTL8139 to be a bit flaky at times but, without it installed, I could not use App Store etc.
  • Graphics card works with NVEnabler64 [3]

iAtkos L2 Installation Guide:

  1. First, the BIOS of the motherboard needed to be updated 1.40 to add support for the E8400 processor.
  2. Enter the BIOS and make sure that SATA mode is set to AHCI. No other settings were required.
  3. Insert DVD, let boot. Will take 5-15 minutes to come up. Use Disk Utility to prep your partition for install.
  4. Proceed. Select the partition you just got ready, then hit Install. I did not choose any non-standard options, nor Graphics Enabler.
  5. After install and reboot, you'll see the next setup screens (time zone select, etc). Proceed and you should be at desktop.
  6. Install your Graphics, Audio and Network kexts as linked above. [4]
  7. Download Champlist [5]
  8. In Champlist, choose Configuration and select: Use Kernel Cache, Ethernet Built In, Hide 'boot', Restart Fix, PCIRoot=1. Save this, it will modify the org.chameleon.Boot.plist in the /Extra folder at the root of your Mac drive.
  9. Then select SMBios, select MacPro3,1 and use Serial Generator to choose CPU as the MacPro3,1 from the 2008 section. Save this to your /Extra folder at the root of your Mac drive.
  10. Reboot and you should be in action. I was able to update to 10.7.3 no problem using Software Update, as well as all other updates that were available.

Z68 Extreme4 Gen3 Intel Z68 UPGRADED TO 10.8.3 WITH 100% SUCCESS AND MORE STABILITY. BELOW HAS DEPRECIATED.

System Configuration:

  • Model Name: Mac Pro
  • Model Identifier: Mac Pro 3,1
  • CPU: Intel i5-2500
  • GPU: Nvidia GTS 250 1gb (Intel onboard doesn't work, see notes)

Component Status:

  • Audio works with kext
  • Ethernet works with kext [6]
  • DSDT precompiled just for this mobo [7]
  • Only Sleep does not work

Installed with 2 methods, both work 100%: iAtkos L2
iAtkos L2 Installation Guide:

  1. Insert DVD, let boot. Will take 5-15 minutes to come up. Use Disk Utility to prep your partition for install.
  2. Proceed. Select the partition you just got ready, then hit Customize.
  3. After install and reboot, you'll see the next setup screens (time zone select, etc). Proceed and you should be at desktop.
  4. Install your Audio and Network kexts as linked above.
  5. You should be fairly setup now.

Installation Guide:

  1. Approx the same as iAtkos. Only difference is, when you get to setup phase two (after reboot) if everything is going very slow, you'll need to (if you can) load your drive as slave onto a real Mac or another mackintosh.
  • Guide: This guy helped me get things working great (except sleep).
  • DSDT: Use the DSDT file I linked earlier.
  • SMBIOS: Do not change the SMBIOS from what is default installed. It should be MacPro3,1 by default. If you try updating it to MacPro5,1 like I did, your Mac will stop booting and you'll have to start over (or clone from a backup like I did)
  • Cloning: Speaking of which, once you get to your desktop, I highly recommend making a clone to another partition/USB drive of your hard work so far. I had to reclone 4 times during the process from making mistakes, and my clone image saved me many hours. Use CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) or your favorite app.
  • Booting: Make sure you are using Chimera v1.7.0 (or higher) for your bootloder instead of Chameleon. Chimera is a fork and is required for your mobo.
  • Networking: After installing the networking kext provided earlier, you want to make sure you *COPY* (not move) it in /System/Library/Extensions/ but to do so you'll need to delete the one thats already there first (cannot overwrite) then copy in, then use KextUtility to rebuild caches. Then reboot. If it works after reboot, keep that extra copy nearby. You may have to reinstall it once more at some point (like on an update to 10.7.4) as Apple overwrites them again. For the same reason, keep your audio and other custom kexts too.
  • Graphics: Intel Integrated Graphics does not work on setup. I was able to install with iAtkos methods just fine with integrated graphics (no graphics card), but after reboot before setup phase two (time zone select, etc) my system just hung at a big off-white screen with Apple logo in the center. I could move the mouse but never did anything. But as soon as I installed a graphics card (for me, Nvidia GTS 250 from my old build) it worked like a charm right away. I think having GraphicsEnabler in chameleon.plist helped but it may be stock with Apple now. You'll need to handle your own graphics card situation. PS- I never tried the Integrated Graphics again after doing setup because I decided to keep my old graphics card afterall.
  • System is LIGHTNING FAST! Here is my full setup and my GeekBench stats:
  1. Intel i5-2500 @ 4.1 (no k)
  2. ASrock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3
  3. G-SKILL 16gb DDR3-1333 CAS 7-7-7-21 (as 4x 4gb sticks)
  4. Nvidia GTS 250 1gb
  5. Crucial M4 SSD 6gbs 64gb & OSX 10.7.3 = System boots cold to ready in < 20 seconds.
  6. Overclocked i5 from 3.3 to 4.1 ; BCLK from 100mhz to 102mhz. (If I had gotten the i5-2500k instead, I could OC to 4.7+)
  7. GeekBench Score @ 64-bit SingleTest=11028; 64-bit StressTest peak=14468

  • Model Identifier: Mac Mini 5,1
  • CPU: Intel i5-2500k
  • GPU: Intel HD-3000
  • SSD: Corsair Force 3 Series 120GB (HDD works also)

Component Status:

  • Audio: should work (but not over HDMI - i use an extern sound card)
  • Graphic: Sometimes glitches in pictures or videos

Installation Guide:

  1. First of all purchase a legal Copy of Lion OSX.
  2. Create an USB-Stick with UniBeast. (Google is your friend)
  3. Boot from your new Stick (Hit F11).
  4. Prepare your Harddrive with Disk Utilities and make it a Mac OS Extended (journaled).
  5. Install on your this partition and wait for reboot. Don´t remove the USB-Stick.
  6. Select your OSX Partition (not USB)

  • Install Method:snow leopard retail. Then made my own USB drive using chimera and the "Install Lion App" from the app store. Then updated from software update to 10.7.3
  • BIOS Version: P5Q SE Plus Rev. 2202 hacked to run all os (This was done previously to install Leopard, it allowed SL and Lion both to run as long as I didn't install an AML! Installing the AML with a hacked bios causes the system to break!)
  • Audio: VIA VT 1708s I used appleHDA for via vt 1708s. This works technically, but it doesn't detect any sound has been installed. Also the volume slider in the menu bar doesn't work. (except to mute or full volume) Also I have the front mic and speaker ports working. The SPDIF is listed in sound settings, but I don't know if they actually work. "Line in Blue rear" is listed, but doesn't work same with "Line out Black rear"
  • LAN: Model, Realtek Gigabit LAN controller featuring AI NET 2: Works OOB.
  • SATA & IDE: As Per usual, make sure to set SATA as AHCI otherwise they won't be seen by the OS. The Seagate Barracuda required me to install a boot1h file to the root of the drive in order to make it bootable. It works great now.
  • Optical Drive: AD-7240S seems to be working great. Faceplate button doesn't work to eject as disk while in OSX, but can be ejected easily from the GUI.

Does PC-EFI and/or the Vanilla Kernel work on your system? Darwin 11.3.0 (I think this means Vanilla) Does everything work without patching? Only sound needed patching
