OS X 10.8.3
Hardware Compatibility

This is a component level hardware compatibility list. We want to keep it as accurate as possible, but please, do not entirely rely on this list when buying hardware. Add which parts you have working in the categories listed below, or create a new category. Please keep alphabetical order inside the categories. The categories themselves are ordered by popularity. Please list any caveats or problems as well.

  • ONLY add hardware that you have TESTED. Don't add hardware just because you think it might work.
  • Please add hardware into tables.
  • This is for 10.8.3 builds only.

For how to edit the Wiki, please see this thread. Thank you!

Hardware Name Chipset Notes Patches Used Compatible 64bit
Z68 Extreme4 Intel Z68 System Configuration:
  • CPU: Intel i5-2500
  • GPU: Nvidia GTS 250 1gb (Intel 3000 onboard works too)

Component Status:

  • Audio works with ALC892 kext (with DSDT) Sometimes makes a pop sound when been silent for long duration.
  • Ethernet works with kext (below)
  • Only Sleep does not work

Upgraded from 10.8 fresh install directly to 10.8.3.
I got started with this guide and it got me 90% of the way. Read this link, and what I've posted, you should be able to install a fresh OSX 10.8 on your computer.

  1. Here
  • BIOS: You need to flash your mobo BIOS with the patched 2.20 version to be able to install and boot OSX 10.8.x. This is because as of 10.8 the NullCpuPowerManagment.kext is rendered useless, which means you cannot boot. The patched BIOS will fix this permanently, meaning you wont even need a replacement .kext. Read about it and download the file here:
  1. http://bios.zmac.net/asrock/Asrock-Z68-Extreme4-220_modified.zip
  2. Source of BIOS patches: http://biosrepo.wordpress.com/asrock/z68/
  • DSDT: You can install and run OSX without a DSDT, but it is unstable and has odd issues (sometimes boot without USB working, no sleep, etc). Put this file in your /Extra/ folder and reboot to fix.
  1. Here
  • SMBIOS: Pick the Macmini5,1 option, as it is most closely related to your mobo.
  • Cloning: Speaking of which, once you get to your desktop, I highly recommend making a clone to another partition/USB drive of your hard work so far. I had to reclone 4 times during the process from making mistakes, and my clone image saved me many hours. Use CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) or your favorite app.
  • Booting: Just use the bootloader (Chimera).
  • Ethernet: Won't work out-of-box, needs this kext installed. Drop the file in /System/Library/Extensions/ and then repair permissions via Kext Utility.app. (Broadcom BCM57781)
  1. http://files.osx86.net/downloads.php?do=file&id=3089&act=down&actionhash=guest&multiple=MzA4OS1CQ001Nzc4MS56aXA=
  • Graphics: For installation of OSX, you will *need* to have your Intel Integrated Graphics 3000 plugged into a monitor directly. Tell the BIOS to use "Onboard" video (in Northbridge section). This is required for OSX installation and first boot.
  1. After install, if you are staying on Onboard graphics, change nothing. If you are installing your own graphics card, you may have to install your own .kext files for it (do your research).
  2. After getting your graphics card working, if you are getting long boot-times, try booting with -v and watch where it hangs. If it says "SNB Framebuffer did not show up, unload" then you will need to simply delete all the .kext files named AppleIntelHD3000Graphics (should be 3 or 4 of them). This will tell OSX to stop trying to load from the onboard graphics, which fixes the "SNB Framebuffer" long boot time issue.

G41M-VS3 R2.0 Intel G41 System Configuration:
  • CPU: Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5800 3.2GHz (But Mac OS X thinks, that I have only 2.8GHz CPU)
  • GPU: AMD Radeon HD6670 1GB (I didn't check onboard Intel GMA X4500)

Component Status:

  • Audio (VIA VT1705) works with VooDooHDA kext
  • Ethernet (Atheros AR8152/8158) works with ALXEthernet 1.0.2 kext, but system cannot start for first time after first reboot. After second reboot it working normally.
  • Note: I installed Mac OS X 10.8.3 from R-Drive backup image (it including kext for PS/2)

Beside the kexts for Ethernet and Audio there is no other kext in E/E or S/L/E except FakeSMC.kext OS X 10.8.3 is runnung perfectly. Later, I added IOAHCIBlockStorageInjector.kext in S/L/E to avoid the orange disk failure, but it is not necessary. Amendment: The same failure as in 10.8.x came back: sometimes bothersome mouse behavior (delays) in iTunes 10.4.1 (Logitech S530 Mac), sometimes the keyboard does´nt function, perhaps is´s faulty, with pc- keyboard the problem is gone (?)

P9X79 Intel X79 System Configuration
  • CPU: Intel i7 3820
  • Video: Asus HD 6570 1GB
  • Storage: Intel 520 Series SSD (connected to 6.0Gbps SATA3 port, not sure if performing that fast though. Profiler reports "Unknown AHCI Standard Controller" and also states that link speed to the drive is 6 Gigabit. Also states TRIM support is not available, not sure if that matters with this drive? Performs rather nicely.)
  • BIOS/EFI version: 3305

Component Status:

  • Audio and Ethernet require trivial kext installs - described in appropriate sections below.
  • Suspend doesn't seem functional, but I don't care to suspend, so I've out zero effort in to fixing that.
  • USB 3.0 ports don't work. Haven't tried to fix them yet.

Notes:

  • Couldn't install using my Kingston DataTraveller. Wasn't obvious that it was my problem. Installed using myHack configured 10.8.3 on a SATA drive.
  • Known 6000 series AMD/ATI problem with installer. Resolved by removing ATI6000 series kext for installation, then replaced it after install. Works quite well. VGA port seems problematic, I can kind of get it to come up, but not while driving HDMI & DVI.
  • Discovered that 'darkwake=0' prevented my machine from doing normal boots, so avoid that unless you're working on it.
  • Found when plugging a USB 3.0 device in to a USB 3.0 port, whole system freezes. So maybe disable those ports in BIOS for now. My system's been fine with them left on.
Install Method:
  • Use myHack to create installer on a spare SATA drive. Relocate/disable the ATI6000 series kext (if using a 6000 series card).
  • Had to boot with flags: 'cpus=1 npci=0x3000'
  • Install normally, nothing special there. Post install (before reboot), replace the ATI6000 series kext and use myFix from myHack to make sure things are sane.
  • After booted in to fresh installed environment, add Intel network driver. Also use it to add VoodooHDA 0.2.7.3 audio driver.
  • Fix hissing sound with audio driver by going in to /System/Library/Extensions/VoodooHDA.kext > find the plist file in there, edit it's iGain value to be '0' - may need to run myHack's myFix again after that, not sure if that's required, but I ran that.
  • (need steps added for USB 3.0 and sleep features. Firewire probably doesn't work OOB either.)
  • Install VoodooTSC kext from here and remove 'cpus' boot flag. All CPU cores are now working.
  • Recommend to all users to use Installer's Disk Utility to generate a backup image of your installation once completed. Save it on to a spare drive incase an update or something busts your system.
