This wiki summarizes a scripted install of OS X for the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 (Core i7), attempting to summarize the most important and most recent highlights from the longer discussion thread located here. OSX Leopard 10.5.6 here.

In January 2009, digital_dreamer and wolfienuke created this thread summarizing a previous longer thread about how to install onto this motherboard. Here we try using a wiki format to summarize that summary. Please read the first post in that thread, which describes a boot-132 install built on top of Chameleon which in turn is built on top of netkas universal installer. The second post in the thread described wolfinuke's EFI partition install; you are welcome to pursue it, but for personal reasons he is no longer maintaining it, and we focus here on the EFI script. . .

[edit] The Basics

This wiki attempts to describe the one best simplest approach. Other techniques work, and while I like to let a thousand flowers bloom, the pioneers are the ones with the arrows in their backs. If you're having trouble, stick to the best worn path we outline here.

Start by reading Post 1 which tells you where to download all the software you need. You will also need a RETAIL OS X 10.5 DVD (not the one that comes with a mac when you buy it which will not work), and you will likely want Apple's 10.5.7 Updater.

Don't be afraid to actually read through the bourne shell script, which is in the ~extra folder of the X58_Mobo_Patch_Installer you will be downloading and using. There is no magic involved, the script is simply a tool to put the right files in the right places with the right permissions, and help you edit a couple of those files to have the right contents.

You need a computer booted into OS X. This could be a real Apple product, or your target i7 system hobbling along booted off e.g. a Kalyway OS X install (even if it runs imperfectly it simply needs to be able to format a hard disk and run our script). You can use IDE at this stage, but later its advisable to not use any IDE whatsoever. If you're using an IDE drive for installation, use only at most 4GB of RAM (more RAM can be added once installation is complete).

The graphics card you choose is critical; it many run imperfectly (no QE) or not at all, or it may require EFI string injection. This is discussed further below.

Our focus is the GA-EX58-UD5 but people have had success with other members of that family. Then run the script. The script is your friend. Here is what the 3.7 script offers.

1) Run entire install sequence (Steps 2-7)
2) Install bootloader (pre-patch)
3) Set partition as active
4) Run Retail DVD installer
5) Run kext/kernel installer
6) Update boot caches
7) Run DSDT patcher
8) Modify plists
9) Modify Mac model name
10) Modify processor info
11) Select "About This Mac" graphic
12) Select bootloader theme
13) Select boot picture
14) Change drive selection
15) View logs
16) Reboot
17) Exit

[edit] Installation

Thanks to knightprozac for the following:

  1. Start with any computer (a Hackintosh or normal Mac) running some form of OS X. This will be running on a separate hard drive from the "Target Hard Drive" which you now or will soon have in your i7 box.
  2. Format your Target Hard Drive as HFS+ (Mac OS Extended) with GUID partition. Never choose case-sensitive HFS+ if you plan to use Adobe products. Select your target hard disk for formatting, not its indented partition(s). If you did this right, the Partition tab shows up in the middle of 5 available tabs. Then change the partition drop down to 1 (meaning, don't show me existing partitions, instead I am telling you the new partitions I want) then use the Options button to make sure you're using GUID.
  3. Run script option 2 ("Install Bootloader pre-patch") and choose Chameleon v2 (for 3.8 script "Chameleon_v2_RC1")
  4. Run script option 3 ("Set partition as active")
  5. Run script option 4 ("Run Retain DVD Installer") and install 10.5 from your Leopard DVD onto your Target Hard Drive. Make certain to select your Target Hard Drive as the destination! Run script option 17 ("Exit") to exit the script.
    1. If you didn't install a retail version of 10.5.7 (likely), then mount MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.7.dmg, and launch the installer. Change the installation location to your Target Hard Drive and perform the 10.5.7 update.
  6. Relaunch the DigitalDreamer script and run options 5 & 6 ("Run kext/kernel installer" and "Update boot caches," respectively).
  7. If you are not on the i7 yet, now is the time to install your Target Hard Drive into your i7 box and boot off it. Now is also the time to make sure the BIOS is set up properly by setting "SATA RAID/AHCI Mode" to "AHCI". You may also want to make sure your Target Hard Drive, which now becomes your boot drive, is selected in the BIOS for booting (though I suspect Chameleon 2.0 makes this no longer a concern since it lets you choose the boot drive). Leave overclocking for later. If you were limping along with any IDE HDD or DVD drives, unplug them now and don't use them anymore. Reboot off of your newly installed Target Hard Drive. Now you can run script option 7 ("DSDT patcher"), which must be run on the target machine. You may also like to try script options 9-13 for aesthetic purposes.

You may wish to explore dual-boot or triple-boot but that is beyond the scope of this wiki, unless someone wants to add a section below... . .

[edit] Graphics Cards

Some crash, and some run but don't have Quartz Extreme. Digital Dreamer' script 3.7 is built on top of Chameleon 2.0 RC1, which is built on top of netkas' universal graphics installer. Some have experienced that the new netkas universal graphics doesn't support their card yet.

[edit] Confirmed Working Cards

The OSx86 project maintains a Hardware Compatibility List that you might find useful. These cards are not guaranteed to work with your i7 build, however. Below are cards that users have confirmed to be working. Cards rumored to work include the 9600GSO and 9600GT.

  • Radeon HD 4870 (dual DVI, all res, CI/QE) requires Natit with the 4870 driver pack (7_radeon_hd_48x0_drivers) [1] [2] [3]
  • eVGA GeForce 9800GTX+ requires EFI string [4] .
  • eVGA 8800GT confirmed working with EFI string.
  • PNY 8800GT confirmed working with EFI string.
  • XFX GTX 285 confirmed working with natit and the drivers available [5]. Drivers are built into OS X 10.5.8 and later.
  • GTX 260 and 285 [6]

Cards rumored to not work include the ATI 3870 and 4830.

[edit] JMicron SATA

The JMicron/GSATA (White ports - identified in the BIOS as Native SATA) are notoriously buggy. Several users have reported issues with sleep, slow shutdowns/restarts when drives are plugged into these ports. If you experience these issues, try moving all your drives to the SATA (Blue) ports and deactivating the GSATA ports in the BIOS.

Some have been able to make the JMicron ports work by removing the universal graphics kext and installing an old fashioned EFI string. I have not found a good source for EFI strings for more recent ATI cards. I look forward to the power of the wiki common mind in updating this paragraph. If you are using a nVidia card, there is a great EFI string resource here.

Another approach is to run netkas scripts after the DD script. You may still need additional scripts from (e.g., QE_CI_Exotic_cards) depending on what graphics card your running.

[edit] EFI string approach

If the above fail, try the EFI string approach. To generate the string you should run OSx86Tools.

  1. Click "Add EFI Strings/Boot Flags".
  2. Click "GFX Strings" (If your card is not listed, click "Custom GeForce hex" and complete the three dialogs with your card's info).
  3. Select the hex at the bottom of the window and copy.
  4. Replace EFI__HEX_STRING_GOES_ HERE in the text below with the string you just copied.
    • <key>device-properties</key>
    • <string>EFI_HEX_STRING_GOES_HERE</string>
  5. Insert the above text in your in your /Extra folder.
  6. Save and reboot.

Actually version 3.9 of X58_Mobo_Patch_Installer makes this even easier. Simply put the raw hex from OSx86Tools into Plists/EFI_string.txt (don't add the <key> or <string> nodes, just the raw hex period) then use option 8 of the script to install.

[edit] Ethernet

Sometimes the Ethernet disappears. People have been fixing this by: shut down, then while power is off, press the reset CMOS button on the back of the motherboard near the ethernet and USB plugs. I googled around and found out this problem also occurs with other operating systems. And that a slightly simpler solution is to simply shut down, THEN ALSO turn off the power supply or unplug it from the wall for a bit. It just worked for me, in fact it worked better than tapping the reset CMOS button. Plus this way you don't have to re-enter all your BIOS settings.

Make sure you attach your Target Hard Drive to either SATA2_0/Blue port (avoid the GSATA/White ports because of the issue identified above). Load your bios setup on your EX58-UD5 computer and Enter Integrated Peripherals. If your running your Target Hard Drive from SATA2_0 (Blue) then change "SATA RAID/AHCI Mode" to "AHCI". Go into "Advanced BIOS Features" and then into "Hard Disk Boot Priority" and make sure your Target Hard Disk is first on the list. (though I suspect Chameleon 2.0 makes this no longer a concern since it lets you choose the boot drive)...

If you do not have a recent BIOS for your UD5, you really should flash your BIOS to version F8 or above (F8 is currently the latest stable BIOS). While this BIOS does not fix the disappearing ethernet, it fixes several issues such as very slow boot and fan speed issues.

The Apple Ethernet Adapter will provide native ethernet support, although it is not gigabit ethernet.

New Realtek drivers have been released and are confirmed to be working flawlessly. An older walkthrough for enabling Bonjour support is available here.

Requesting info on this! Does RAID 5 work at all? Only on the blue ports?

[edit] General Troubleshooting

If you're having problems, be certain to boot with the -v option and to look at your console log. Be certain you're not using any IDE drives or the JMicron (white) ports in any way... . . .

Most users who have upgraded to BIOS F8 have reported good stability. Be aware that flashing your BIOS is always risky (read the info in your manual or on Gigabyte's web site if you do not know what you are doing)... . . . . . . . . .

[edit] Upgrading to Leopard 10.5.8

If you have used the most recent version of digital_dreamer's script, you should have the required kernel extensions in your /Extra folder to do the upgrade using Apple Software Update. You should note, however, that sleep will stop working, even if you are not using the problematic JMicron/GSATA (White ports). If sleep is important, you may want to postpone upgrading to 10.5.8 until a fix is available.

[edit] Upgrading to Snow Leopard

The latest version of digital_dreamer's script will enable you intall a developer preview build of 10.6. The process is very similar but you must select PC-EFI as the bootloader. Mac OS X 10.6 can be booted in both 32 or 64-bit mode. To boot into 64-bit mode, you will need 64-bit versions of kernel extensions. To date, network and sound kernel extensions have not been available/reliable in 64-bit. The network issue can be resolved by buying the Apple USB Ethernet adapter used for MacBook Air (works out of the box with 10.6 - not only for MacBook Air). Some have resolved their sound issued by using an EFI string. Another option is to use an USB audio device as an output device. It also looks like recent voodooHDA.kext can solve the problem.

Another well documented issue for 10.6 is a CMOS reset bug causing your bios settings to be reseted to default after each restart. This can be fixed by following the directions posted here.

[edit] General Hackintosh Tips and Tricks

To minimize the risk of ending up with an unbootable system after a system software update or after making bootloader or kernel changes, it is highly recommended to dedicate a hard drive (or at least a partition) for maintenance purposes. A separate hard drive is preferable because it enables you to have a backup bootloader installed as well (this backup bootloader can then be used to boot any bootable system, no matter which drive they are installed on). On the maintenance drive, a basic, no frill version of Mac OS X should be installed with a few essential Hackintosh tools (such as digital_dreamer's script). Some users are using 3 partitions on the maintenance drive: one for a maintenance version of the Mac OS X they are currently running, one to experiment with Snow Leopard and another to use when needed (such as testing a software upgrade by cloning one of the 2 partitions identified above and then applying the software update on this clone to see if it will boot).

The more you minimize your reliance on hackintosh kernel extensions, the less issues you will likely end up with. Network is especially important since loosing your access to the internet will impair your ability to download potential fixes. Getting the Apple USB Ethernet Adapter is one way to remove the dependency on hackintosh network kext. Sound is another area that can be supported natively by using a supported usb audio interface.

[edit] Future Directions

digital_dreamer's script is quite transparent, and could be easily modified to support other popular boards or systems. Likely most could be supported without even modifying the script and simply putting a different set of kexts in the labelled folders. If anyone knows of guides that have done so, do add a link here. . . .

Likely the netkas universal graphics installer will have new versions, and that Chameleon 2.0 RC1 will have new versions (anyone got a link to good threads on these) and that these will stimulate new versions of the digital_dreamer script. I pray this means better graphics card support. . . . . . . . . . . . . .
