OS X 10.4.8
Hardware Compatibility

This is a hardware compatibility list for portable computers. We want to keep it as accurate as possible, but please, do not entirely rely on this list when buying a portable computer. Don't forget to add how you got OSx86 running on your portable x86 computer, and to use proper English. Please see the discussion page for proper instructions on how to input your system specs. Also, please contribute to the HCL 10.4.8 page, which should list a more granular view of compatibility. If your computer isn't listed, you should try it if you have a SSE2 or higher processor. Kernels are available for most configured machines

  • ONLY add hardware that you have TESTED. Don't add hardware just because you think it might work.
  • Please add hardware into tables.
  • This is for 10.4.8 builds only.

Please list your computers in alphabetical order by manufacturer (Asus, Acer, Dell, HP, etc)

For how to edit the Wiki, please see this thread. Thank you!

Note: Please add whether your device supports QE, Quartz Extreme, graphics. Try playing a movie with Quicktime Player.

Running MacOSX 10.4.8 Installing MacOSX presented no issues whatsoever. What works: A lot of stuff including sound, touchpad, all USBs, DVD+-RW, Ethernet Broadcom 5788 (with AppleBCM5701Ethernet.kext patched), Video drivers (ATI Mobility Radeon x700)(for 1280x800 check [1]), can watch videos perfectly (DivX, Xvid, WMV). It's really nice having Mac OS X almost fully working now, I have Office, Adium, iLife. What doesn't work: Card Reader, Intel Wifi, Conexant Modem.

Aspire 1642Z-WLMi

- Note1 : Like many other Portables, it doesn't show the interface if you don't use the dongle/wire trick.
- Note2 : On first boot hold Caps until Mac Os Login window (Safe Mode), then read how to install the Graphic Card.
- Note3 : 10.4.9 Update Works Read Here

Aspire 2001

  • OS :JaS.10.4.8.Intel.SSE2.SemtheX.Beta9
  • CPU : Intel Pentium-M 1.4ghz (Banias,no pae)
  • Graphic Card : ATI MOBILITY 9200 64MB, can change res to 1280x800 by using callisto 003fixed,yet not opengl ,qe and ci support
  • Audio : Realtek AC'97 Audio,OK
  • Bluetooth: can use external and not problem found
  • Keyboard: work as it should be, only some function can't work, and it may conflict with touchpad
  • Touchpad: Synaptics TouchPad v5.9, it works but not stable, sometimes it crashes and makes the keyboard can't use as well, have to reboot or login agian to make it work again
  • PCMCIA:ENE CB1410 Cardbus Controller (unknown)
  • USB OK
  • FIREWIRE: TI OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller, not problem
  • Ethernet:Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC ,not problem
  • Wireless: internet Intel Wireless Pro 220BG not working,
  • PowerManagement: can't detect it as laptop, have to replace the kext,
  • Agere Systems AC'97 Modem (not support)
  • Hot Key Launch Manager (not support)
  • Infrared: SMC IrCC - Fast Infrared Port (unknown)

to install the JaS.10.4.8.Intel.SSE2.SemtheX.Beta9, have to backup AppleACPIPlatform.kext and AppleAPIC.kext and replace the new one after installation, or it won't boot (http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=36171)

Aspire 2423WXM

  • OS: MyZar 10.4.5 SSE2 with Patch 10.4.8 SSE2 from Jas
  • Intel Celeron M 1.5ghz (shows unknown processor), 512mb DDR2, 100GB ATA
  • Intel GMA 900 shared mem @ 1280x800x32@60. QE/CI Working with a paper clip on the external VGA connector (Pin 6-11)
  • Lan works
  • Sound Works (i've tried only 2ch and mic. Volume Control works)
  • USB works + trackpad works
  • Battery meter thanks to PowerManager
  • Dual Boot OSX+XP using Acronis Loader

Aspire 3023 LCi

3023Lci

  • AMD Sempron 3000+ 1800 Mhz; Palermo core; x86, SSE2, SSE3; Supports PAE funciton.
  • ATI Mobility Radeon x600 PCI Express 64MB
  • ATI Radeon Xpress 200P (RX480) motherboard chipset
  • BIOS Phoenix v1.20
  • AQVY62MM IDE Controller, Ultra-ATA-100 hard drive type

Running in VMWare. Succeded only with JaS.Mac.OS.X.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSE2.SSE3.PPF.1.Defiant.diskutil.biker880.ich7-R.patch.Integrated.iso image. AMD processor and ATI x600 patches included. Mac Os works very slow but stable, need to be patient. Looks like processor is always busy, however the Process monitor program in Mac tells that everything is fine. Returning back to host Windows operation system, I can see that vmware uses CPU too much up to 90%. Don't know why. Didn't try any additional kexts that are out of the image. Native keyboard, touchpad and USB mouse - all work fine, good display, no sound. Verdict - quite usable system to launch Apple applications.

Failed with the image Leopard-10.5.2-AMD-EFI-Rev2.iso – "still waiting for root device" problem. Also tried iDeneb_v1.1_10.5.4.iso and iDeneb_v1.4_10.5.6.iso, they successfully got boot device but after that there were multiple crashes mostly telling "Read-only file system" and that it can’t create directories and logs, so I didn't get any further with them.

  • Realtek AC97 Audio -works
  • Realtek 8139 Ethernet -works
  • Atheros 5005 MiniPCI WiFi -my instructions: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=33089
  • HL-DT-ST DVD-RW works, except with iMovie, Apple DVD Player shows no video (VLC works).
  • Intel USB 2.0 - works
  • Synaptics Trackpad - works
  • ENE CB1410 PCMCIA (Cardbus/PC Card) slot: not working. trying to port linux pcmcia-cs driver.

Aspire 3680

  • Intel Celeron M 1.46ghz (shows unknown processor), 512mb DDR2, 60GB ATA
  • Intel GMA 950 shared mem @ 1280x800x32@60. QE/CI Working with GMA patch
  • Lan Atheros wireless fully working as Airport after changing to en1 from en0
  • Sound ALC 883 working with kext edit 2ch output only. Full software control of volume
  • All USB + trackpad working
  • PowerBundle.kext to enable battery meter + management
  • Dual Boot OSX+XP using Darwin loader
  • Not working: 5in1 card reader (use XP to access)

  • OS version: JaS 10.4.8 ppf patched - select Intel SSE3, 10.4.4 login window app, GMA 950 drivers, powermgmt bundle
  • CPU: Celeron M 430 / 1.73 GHz (detected by CPU-Z as Yonah core)
    • was advertised by Microcenter & on the box as a Celeron M 420, 1.6 GHz - got an extra 133 MHz for free!
    • detected as Core Solo in JaS 10.4.6 & Core Duo in JaS 10.4.8
  • MoBo chipset: Intel 945GM Express - all the basics like USB, SATA, keyboard, trackpad, etc. work fine
  • Video: GMA 950 - works like a charm (1280x800 on a 14.1" screen), minor color correction under pref panes
  • Sound: Realtek ALC883 - works after installing Azalia driver for 2-ch speaker out only
    • Taruga's HDA driver adds more ports but doesn't play out the built-in speakers
  • Lan: Marvell Yukon 88E8038 - not working, though others have gotten it working on different laptops (???)
  • WiFi: Atheros AR5005G - working after some hacking in the terminal {see/search forums}
  • PCMCIA: Texas Instruments chipset PCIxx12 - working after installing hacked driver + glitchman 10.4.8 kexts {see/search forums}
  • 5-in-1 card reader: does not work, Windows device manager shows it as part of the PCMCIA chipset/interface
  • PowerManagement: works fine
  • Deep Sleep: like most hackintoshes, does not work (though someone claimed it working in 10.4.7 updated version)
  • Dual Boot: kinda tricky - work in progress (lots of guides available on this one)
    • Overall Impression: Can't beat the deal! Paid $450 and could get $50 back if I get around to mailing in the rebate. Everything either works fine out the box or can be gotten to work, except for built-in ethernet--but that can be gotten around by using a USB-to-ethernet adapter or probably PCMCIA card. Deep sleep is being worked on by others more technical than I. The laptop came with Vista basic, but ran like molasses. After installing Tiger x86, it pounces like a monster feline. Battery life seems to be about 3 hrs, depending on Energy Saver settings.

  • Ethernet: - works - AppleIntel8255x.kext (edit plist)

  • Modem: - appears in ioreg but haven't tried to get it working
  • WiFi: - Intel 2100 - doesn't work (experimental driver kills kernel). Swapped for a Dell TrueMobile 1450 which works after editing AirPortBrcm43xx plist, and requires tape over pins 11/13 to prevent the radio being turned off (again no hotkey driver)
  • Tablet: - works with tabletmagic. Needs Apple16X50ACPI plist editing to match "WACF004" to enable the internal serial port
  • Other issues: - clock runs slow, probably due to wrong FSB setting. Will try to fix. . . . . . . . . .

Was able to use PCMCIA using parallels to emulate windows. (I Tried to fix for the Texas Instruments PCI-1420 Carbus Manage, but it dodn;t work, so I got Paralles for Mac from a friend, and am using it for wireless internet.

The only things I haven't got to work is the battery information (I don't need it anyway, it is always pugged in..) and the PCMCIA controller.

Evo N610c == Evo N620c

JaS 10.4.8 Mac OSx86 Tiger work fine.

note: when find a install menu, select only "type intel" work also on evo620, i have installed in two models 610 and 620 and works fine.

Everything is working, excluding ps2 mouse working (badly) after replugging....

Note: in order to let ethernet working, You've to use these drivers...

nc8000 Business Notebook

Intel Pentium M @ 1.6 GHz - 512 MB DDR - ATI Mobility Radeon 9500 64 MB

Working almost perfectly

  • Broadcom BCM5705M_2 (with fix: [2])
  • USB
  • Firewire
  • Sound
  • Bluetooth
  • Battery Indicator (though performance SUCKS while on battery so it's always plugged in for me). Used the power management package on Installation. If I disable SpeedStep on the bios, then it doesn't detect the battery. Shucks!
  • CI+QE Graphics up to 1400x1050x32, editing com.apple.Boot.plist or Callisto 003.
  • Wireless Atheros works following the guides on forum insanelymac.

(Wireless does not work on 1.5 ghz model?! Hardware differs somewhat.)

Not Working

  • Sleep Mode (Hangs, disable in system preferences.)
  • PCMCIA (Have not tried to hard.)
  • SD card reader

My way to 10.4.11. Fresh install JAS 10.4.8. Fix Network above link. Upgrade to 10.4.9 following the guides on forum regarding 10.4.9 update. (Backup certain kexts mach_kernel + network and ATI and then restore them before reboot.). Upgrade kernel to max patched 8.9 for 10.4.9 Repeat procedure with 10.4.11 comboupdate intel.

nc6120

Copied from 10.4.7, the same things apply here

Using JaS 10.4.8 - You need external monitor attached or use the 1-wire trick: [3]. Also, don't select the GMA950 package during installation, install it later on login and repair user/permissions.

Intel Pentium M @ 2Ghz - 1GB DDR2 533Mhz, Intel GMA915 Couldn't get it working on batteries - the performance is badly degraded. To use it on batteries disable intel speedstep in BIOS.

Working

  • Broadcom BCM5705M_2 (with fix: [4])
  • USB
  • FireWire
  • CI - QE & QE2D
  • Optical Drive
  • Touchpad (enable tapping in System Preferences)
  • Keyboard incl Mute/Volume keys
  • Sound mostly (Mic, Speakers & headphones, can't mute speakers w/o muting headphones)
  • Battery & Power Management (with fix: [5]), package is available in Jas installcd also.
  • Bluetooth

Not Working

  • Wireless Intel 2200BB (possible fix: [6], detects adapter and connects to open networks.)
  • Sleep Mode
  • PCMCIA
  • SD card reader

OS: Jas 10.4.8 AMD/Intel SSE2/SSE3 with applied PPF patch 1

Video: Intel GMA900
Audio: Analog Devices AD 1981B AC '97 audio
LAN: Broadcom 440x
Modem: Agere Systems AC '97 soft modem
Cardbus controller: Texas Instruments PCIxx21/x515
Firewire: Texas Instruments generic 1394 controller
Optical drive: Matshita UJ-840D DVD+/-RW DL drive

Warning: do NOT select JaS's GMA900 package during the instalation!!! Install it after the first reboot.

Working:

- Audio ( including speakers out and microphone in ) - working out of the box.

- LAN - it seems the included IONetworkFamily.kext is broken. Get the same kext from JaS's 10.4.7 release ( or from here ), replace the original one, repair kext's permitions and then reboot.

- Video - this is the solution to enable QE/CI:

1. Install Mac OS X 10.4.8 WITHOUT selecting JaS's GMA900 support package.
2. Reboot.
3. After first boot, install JaS's GMA900 support package from Mac OS X 10.4.8 install DVD.
4. Open Terminal and enter the following commands:

sudo -i ( enter your account password, if ask )
 cd /system/library/extensions
 chown R root:wheel AppleIntel915*
 chmod R 755 AppleIntel915*
 cd /system/library
 rm -rf Extensions.mkext Extensions.kextcache
5. Reboot.

Everyday boot is possible only with inserted paperclip or VGA dummy dongle.

- Optical drive - working fine with Toast Titanium 7 & 8.

- Touchpad - working out of the box.

- USB - both USB 1.1 and 2.0 working out of the box.
- Firewire working out of the box, tested on a JVC camcorder

- External USB Bluetooth adapter Belkin F0T013 - working out of the box.

Not working:

- Modem

- Sleep function

Not tested:

- Cardbus controller - not tested, maybe this manual will make it work.
System works pretty fast and stable. QuickTIme 7.1.3 and ITunes 7.0.2 worked flawlessly. The only problem is the slow performance of DVD Player, but I'm using VLC instead.

Another success story:
My NX6110 is like the one described above, the only difference being an Intel 2200 wireless chipset instead of broadcom. I can confirm that the GMA900 support should not be installed during OS install. The solution to get QE/CI as described above did not work for me. I did have success by installing the http://diabolik1605.com/DHF/iNVidia.html GMA900 Patch.

Initially got wireless network working by installing the iwi2200 package. Currently this driver only supports unencrypted networkds. Therefore i purchased a second hand Sitecom WL-113 USB stick for 10 euros and installed the native Osx factory driver which works splendidly. Might try to find a broadcom mini-PCI card which should also work.

Touchpad working, but no scrolling.
Sleep is kind of working. Screen turns black but HD keeps spinning. At least it comes back from sleep normally.

System is very useable and feels even smoother than my Win XP installation. My crappy notebook just got a facelift!

  • Touchpad: working, need to load kext file

1. After installation boot directly into single user mode (-s)
2. DMA: Replace the "AppleGenericPCATA.kext" in order to get DMA working [[7]]
3. Video: Add the PCI-ID of your Radeon to /System/Library/Extensions/CallistoHAL.kext/Info.plist (The PCIID should be 0x59551002)
4. WLAN:

4.1. Remove the "/System/Library/Extensions/AppleAirport2.kext" (make a backup)
4.2. Add your PCIID of the WLAN chip (4318) to "/System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/Plugins/AppleAirPortBrcm4311.kext/contents/Info.plist"

5. Load the ApplePS2 Keyboard and Mouse driver with kextload
6. Delete "/System/Library/Extensions.kextcache" and "/System/Library/Extensions.mkext"
7. Reboot and have fun!

Note: The keyboard and mouse driver have to be loaded each time the system boots; I'm working on a better documentation...

Installed with Jas 10.4.8 Intel SSE2/SSE3. just pick the intel 10.4.8. instal, and powermanagement bundle. no other drivers.

Works nicely out of the box, except for the graphics, no QE/CI (damn intel 855!) For wireless, just take device id (0x43208086) out of AppleAirport2.kext, And put it in the AppleAirPortBRCM4311.kext, inside plugins in the IO80211Family.kext. wheel and chmod them both, then restart.

Sleep doesn't work correctly, display freezes instead of blacking out, but the laptop will turn off display when you close the lid. good battery time too :) .

It is possible to run on this machine.

  • System: 2.39GHz Pentium 4 (SSE2) with 1024MB RAM
  • Graphics: Intel onboard 845GL
  • Ethernet: Untested
  • Audio: Needs a kext which I lost :-S, may vary depending on age.

- another Inspiron 1100 -

  • 2 GHz Celeron (SSE2) w 512MB RAM
  • Intel 845GL - no QE/CI, so mplayer, vlc, google earth doesn't work.
  • Ethernet and PCMCIA works well with the following kexts:
IONetworkingFamily.kext
IOPCIFamily.kext
IOPCCardFamily.kext

all kext are from 10.4.7 installer. Audio out and mic in works well.

Use 8.8.1 semthex kernel with 8.8.1 system.kext for cool cpu!

For 10.4.9, use 10.4.8 install with 10.4.4 loginwindow.app and the modified 10.4.9 system update, and the first version of 2007.4 security update (This two update available on 10.4.9 installer DVD.).

Works with 10.4.10 update too.

After all updates, before restart, copy back the following kexts from backup:

AppleACPIPlatform.kext
AppleSMBIOS.kext
IOATAFamily.kext
IONetworkingFamily.kext
IOPCCardFamily.kext
IOPCIFamily.kext
System.kext

to /System/Library/Extensions,

copy back the kernel mach_kernel to root,

copy back the 10.4.4 loginwindow.app to /System/Library/CoreServices.

Repair permissions and reboot.

You can find a useful cooler fan control app, called i8kfan for Dell laptops: http://potatosaladx.blogspot.com/

Inspiron 2200

Ok, it was quite an ordeal but finally got Tiger on it.

System:

  • Pentium M 1.6GHz
  • 512 MB RAM, 2 DIMMs 256 at 333 MHz
  • Hard disk Western Digital 160Gb (laptop's original was Toshiba 60Gb)
  • Intel 915GM/910GML graphics
  • Audio Sigmatel Tel C-Major (9752)
  • Wireless Dell 1450 (Broadcom 4324)

I tried Kylaway (Leopard 10.5.2) first, it wouldn't work after several tries, I wouldn't even get the white Apple screen. The bars also moved quite slow, so decided on Tiger. Tried first Jas 10.4.6, would install but no startup, I think it was because of my lack of experience in dual boot.

I created ISO install DVDs with MagicISO. Boot from DVD. I successfully installed Jas 10.4.8 with dual boot. Boot is done by the Mac part. Check http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Simple_Dual_Boot. If you want the boot controlled by Windows: http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Stock_XP_and_OS_X_Dual_Boot

Now, the installation went pretty well. You will need a second display during installation, if not, it won't show, you will only see a light blue screen. Use disk Utility to look for and prepare the partition you have saved for OSX. Install only what you need, that is, Custom->Intel stuff and such.

I got five errors messages at the start, related with audio and video, continue reading.

I had to fix the video, wouldn't work without the second display. After trying many things, what worked was to replace the IntelGMA900s with the ones from Leopard, get it at: http://rs81.rapidshare.com/files/121935445/Leopard_915kext.zip. Save the old ones as backup. No QE/CI though, sorry, it seems to be a quite common problem and didn't find a solution on the web for it. I think it is using a generic VGA and the kext doesn't recognize the 915GM chip, some say it is a BIOS problem.

Audio it works changing permissions, follow: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t978.html. Audio buttons work as well.

Wireless didn't work. But this fix worked like magic: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=8522. My Dell Wireless 1450 was Broadcom 4324 (so, write pci14e4,4324), others seem to be 4309.

USB and everything else seems to work perfectly. I am surprised at the speed. Down to three error messages at start, they are permission related, easy to fix. I fixed them but then the display wouldn't work, so, I kept the error messages. . . .

--- Edit by jdoyle ---- It all works! Using 10.4.8 Semthex kernel. Had to install standard networking.kext file available on this forum and battery indicator also easily found here. CI & QE work, DVD player works, firewire, ethernet ( with kext ) . Wireless internet using ASUS WG167L USB dongle and OS X drivers. Makes a great Hackintosh! .

--- Edit by starfighta ---- Started with JaS 10.4.8 then upgraded to Kalyway 10.4.10. Graphics, CI & QE, USB, FW, ethernet, DVD+R burning, work out-of-box. No dual-display yet with NVinject, titan, or natit. No PCMCIA yet. Wireless works by same method as 5160: <string>pci14e4,4320</string> in IO80211Family.kext\Contents\PlugIns\AppleAirPortBrcm4311.kext\Contents\Info.plist. (that is for Dell Truemobile 1350). Thank you sebus for the heads-up.

Interesting note: Performance was okay but graphics were a little sluggish. After reading about Dell laptops in the Speedboost section I figured that must be the reason. However there is no "compatible" option in the 5150 BIOS. Turns out Dell updated the BIOS at A36 to switch the clock speed during startup as mentioned. In OS X this shows up as 1.6Ghz in the System Profiler meaning that the clock never switches into full speed. Downgrading the BIOS if you are A36 or greater (I was A38) will solve the problem and will significantly boost processor and graphics performance. Be warned tho: Dell put the update out in response to issues of a batch of 5150s melting the case which ruins the motherboard! The Dell has shut itself off once since downgrading due to overheating so I blew air into the vents to dust off the heat-exchanger. Has been running for days without any further issue, although it is not nearly as quiet as my MBPro. .

It all works! Original install of Jas 10.4.8 then upgraded to 10.4.9 Using 10.4.9 netkas May 03 kernel

Had to edit IONetworkingFamily.kext by replacing file IONetworkingFamily.kext\Contents\PlugIns\AppleBCM440XEthernet.kext\Contents\MacOS\AppleBCM440XEthernet from earlier version (10.4.6?)

CI & QE work using alllaptop.zip from this forum, Firewire works instantly, USB2 & audio also work

Wireless works by editing <string>pci14e4,4320</string> in IO80211Family.kext\Contents\PlugIns\AppleAirPortBrcm4311.kext\Contents\Info.plist. (that is for Dell Truemobile 1350)

Sleep does NOT work & also battery life is non-existing (currently it eats battery as there was no tomorrow - W2K3 server on same machine keeps battery for ~ 1.5-2 hours of heavy use, MacOS ~ 40min max)

NOTES: After laptop lid is shut internal display turns off, you have to reboot laptop. You can use Insomnia.kext to keep on constantly and take the battery life implications. Sleep isn't working for me it never wakes!I did not find the Microphone port working... SOUND is coming out of laptop speakers and headphone at same time! maybe newer than"1.13" taruga hda patcher will fix this?

EDIT: Sleep will work with the new SpeedStepping Kernel being developed and also speed stepping on Pentium M will then work too. LaptopDisplay.kext looks to be a likely solution for the dongle trick.

EDIT: 1) Are the extra files not bundled with the torrents yet (July 07, those URLs are 404)? 2) Can anyone running this on a B130 please post some benchmarks? I have a B130, and am considering a hard drive upgrade if this is usable (currently VMware on it is pretty slow).

Edit: Dude there is no need for benchmarks, OSX runs great on a B130, I run photoshop and Word(roseta) and it shows in a snap. Besides most of the steps above are outdated as the latest 10.4.9 dvd come with all drivers pre installed.

 - Dell wireless was fixed here [13]
Broadcom Internal 4306 - Com.apple.boot.plist - (Drag to desktop, open with texteditor, make the changes, drag back)
- added the following to it:

<key>Timeout</key>
<string>8</string>
<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>fsb=133</string>
<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>cpus=1</string>
Timeout is allowing you to change how long you see the darwin bootloader screen.
FSB - is for the annoying inconsistency of the time, as well as correct video and audio sync.
cpus - is for disabling the other core, so you dont have to disable it in bios every time you want to use OSX.

- DUAL BOOT - Quick Guide - Use OSX86 installer DVD, goto Utilities > Disk Utility > Create 2 Partitions, one for MS Dos, the Other Mac OSX Extended Journeled. Now install OSX. Play around in OSX a bit to ensure its working correctly. Then restart with XP SP2 CD. You can delete the Fat32(MS Dos) Partition, then create a 5GB partition that is NTFS. Once it completes, it will start to install WinXP. Power down the laptop. Then Turn on with the Vista CD/DVD in. Now you can install Vista to the other partition. Now download EasyBCD for vista. Then you can add OSX as an option to the Vista Bootloader and it should work!

O.K. This is Feb.2, 2007 and I've got it very simple:

I didn't want dual boot (just osX) on my Dell Inspiron 6400 so I did this:

1- Found a Linux Install CD (ubuntu is perfect, knoppix too)
2- Made 1 partition and made it active. shutdown.
3- Booted using Jas 10.4.8 + diskutil fix iso. (defiant fix)
4- In DiskUtil Made 1 HFS+ Partition
5- Installed OSX with Intel and support options.
6- Replace /system/Library/IONetworkingFamily.kext from the one in 10.4.6 Get it here->[14]
7- In Applications/Utilities/DiskUtility, Repaired permissions, restarted.

DONE! (OS X running in 30 mins!) --> I think it's possible to skip step #1 and #2 , but I didn't try.

[GMA950]I got 1200x800 QE/CI. Video is Beautiful with no issues.

Audio: WORKING !!! (Sigmatel 9200)---> HDAPatcher is here : http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=8404
The "linux codec dump" is here --> [15]
Just drag this codec onto the patcher (once you've unzipped it). reboot, sound!! If you get a Kernel panic when you drag the Linux codec dump onto HDAPatcher then you need to switch your Kernel to the DaemonES version. I can't link to it but search insanelymac forum for it. Install it with instructions found here --> [16]
Now the HDAPatcher should work and you are golden!

It only works with the full 10.4.8 installation dvd, not with a combo update to 10.4.8 from an earlier version of os x

DUAL CORE - Laptop must boot with CPUS=1 in boot.plist or via a boot flag. No known fixes for Dual Core on Dell laptops with any kernel.
SLEEP FUNCTIONALITY - (Notebook does not wake up from closed lid or induced sleep)
PCMCIA FUNCTIONALITY no known drivers Good Luck to all!

My (djs5916) DELL Inspiron 6400 Core 2 Duo, ATI X1400 on WXGA graphics findings:

Concur with the above - Jas 10.4.8 with ppf1 patch install. Used only appropriate ATI drivers in the BorisBadenov method within /System/Library/Extensions:

  ATIRadeonX1000.kext
  ATIRadeonX1000GA.plugin
  ATIRadeonX10000GLDriver.bundle
  ATIRadeonX1000VADriver.bundle
  ATINDRV.kext

Moved all others (Titan, Natit, other ATI drivers into an /Old folder) and modified the ATIRadeonX1000.kext Info.plist to include the X1400 vendor & device ID as indicated. The video is still limited to 1024x768 despite the setting in my com.apple.Boot.plist.

I can confirm that the audio patcher and codec above appear to work for my Inspiron, and in order to remove annoying audio stuttering and poor performance, I included Kernel_Flags entries for platform=x86pc cpus=1 and fsb=166. System Profiler sees 0 Processors with 1 Core, and the X1400 is identified as an X1300 (possibly poor editing of the kext's plist!) with CI/QE enabled but with significant mouse-tearing. The EDID work by np on [[17]] appears to be the most promising, IMHO.

Can someone post bluetooth instructions, I heard bluetooth works!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge...

Latitude C640

- JaS 10.4.8
- Processor: Intel Pentium 4 M 2.0 Ghz
- RAM: 1Gb DDR
- Graphics: ATI 7500 @ 1024x768
- Wireless: miniPCI Broadcom 4318 working
- Ethernet: 3com 920 working
- Audio: Working
- Touchpad: Synaptics, Working, Tapping
- Combo unit working
- Note: I've had some issues with installing JaS 10.4.8 after using the C640 for a while. It seems that if it's hot during the installation, the fan will kick in to high speed, and it errors out and forces you to restart. This has happened to me many times and after waiting an hour or so the installation works. .

- I can also confirm that JaS 10.4.8 works on this laptop. Also had trouble with overheating during install. Had to let it cool completely before starting and allow plenty of airflow or it would flake out half way through. Seems to run OK once it is installed though. (1.8Ghz, 512MB model) . .

Latitude C840

Installation Method:

  • Native install using 10.4.8 JaS Intel & AMD SSE SSE2 DVD ISO.
  • Installed Intel and SSE2 patches.

Hardware:

  • Intel Pentium 4 Mobile 1.7 GHz
  • 512 MB Ram
  • HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4240N
  • AC'97 Audio Controller
  • Nvidia Geforce 440 Go
  • 3Com 3C920 Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller

Problems / Resolutions

  • Initial screen errors caused kernel panic. Fixed using theReformed article's instructions: HOWTO: OSX + Dell Latitude C840 - Part 2
  • Screen resolution sort of fixed using MacVidia 1.0.8. Still no QE/CI hardware acceleration for this archaic video card.
  • Though this laptop has two batteries installed, battery icon doesn't show up in the toolbar to represent how much battery life/power is left on the laptop - user must estimate their battery life. - Fixed using the PowerManagement.bundle found through InsanelyMac. - Dell batteries usually have battery life meters on the bottom anyway.

Comments:

  • Ensure you get the IONetworkingFamily.kext from 10.4.3 if you choose to use the built-in Ethernet device. The 10.4.6-10.4.8 kexts will not support the device for some reason.
  • Using the tweaks listed in the Tips & Tricks page speeds up the system about 30%. Be sure to take a look at your BIOS and the Intel Speedstep entries before you install.

CX210X

- OSx86 10.4.8 (JaS ISO with PPF patch applied, works brilliantly)
- Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 1.66Ghz (64bit enabled, no cores disabled)
- Sigmatel Audio 9250 (fully functional, ran the AppleHDA patcher with the -legacy bootup option)
- ATI Mobility X1400 (functional, QE/CI/OpenGL support after manual modification, still at 1024x768)
- Integrated Gigabit Ethernet (fully functional, very quick)
- Integrated Bluetooth (fully functional, gives me a reason to get a Wii Remote)
- Keyboard and trackpad (functional, mouse tearing due to video acceleration, may apply a patch later)
- Tablet screen (Not working, highly doubtful Finepoint has OSX drivers, will keep searching)
- Intel PROset 3945 a/b/g (Not working, will attempt wireless beta drivers)

Even with some hardware not working, OSx86 runs very well and very stable on this machine. I thought I would try it since my hardware had a similar match with the iMac. It runs everything I've thrown at it, including Final Cut Pro and Office 2004, and I'll attempt other software later tonight. Battery Management works well, but I'll patch it with a recently updated bundle for better predictions of time left for the battery. .

MX8711

Intel 1.73 GHz Dual-Core Pentium SSE3, 1 GB RAM, 100 GB HD Installed with JaS 10.8 (original--no PPF installed) Been using as primary machine for over a month. Very stable.

Working: Video - Used GMA950 drivers on JaS Install disc Sound - Patched using Taruga's AppleHDaPatcher_v1.15.zip and Sigmatel9250.txt dump Airport - Modified kext file to change BSD port name from en0 to en1 USB Ports - Worked out of the box

Not Working: Ethernet Port, PCMCIA

NOTE: I initially posted the MX8711 to the 10.4.6 HCL by accident. My apologies.

MX8734

This is essentially the same machine as MX8711, one comes with Vista Home, the other with Vista Premium and has a bigger HD. If you are looking for a new OS X compatible notebook you can't go wrong with this, its is probably one of the most compatible systems

Before beginning go in the BIOS and change the "Plug & Play OS" to "Other" from "Advanced Options" if you don't the keyboard and the touchpad will not work. You need a USB keyboard and mouse during installation, built-in keyboard and touchpad dont respond in the intstaller. After installation they work flawlessly with any additional effort.

Installed Jas 10.4.8 AMD/Intel SSE2/SSE3 DVD Using Custom Install Option and selecting the following Packages:

 10.4.8 Intel Package
 Intel GMA950 Drivers Package
 PowerManagement Bundle
Also used the Sigma package but it didn't seem to have an effect.

Post Install Setup

 1. Sound:
 - Get the AppleHDAPatcher_v1.15.zip from
   http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=32859&hl=applehda
 - Get the Sigmatel9250.txt from
   http://psykopat.free.fr/apple/AppleHDA/sigmatel/
 2. Wireless Card - the wireless card (RTL8187) appears as a USB card:
 - Download the latest OSX drivers from Realtek site this thread has details
   http://forum.insanelymac.com/lofiversion/index.php/t29797.html
 - After installation edit the
   /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist file, change
   <key>BSD Name</key>
   <string>en0</string>
   TO
   <key>BSD Name</key>
   <string>en1</string>
 - fix permissions in diskutils
 3. Ethernet - This was the most challenging, this computer has Intel 100 Pro VE
but the ktext included in this system has a bad driver, there are some threads on it.
You need to get an older ktext for the internal Ethernet card to work
 - Get the older ktext file from this thread
   http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&showtopic=14840&view=findpost&p=97291
 - Delete the AppleIntel8255x.kext from
   /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/
 - Follow the instructions from the zip file, please note that the zip is a little funny
although it expands to a .ktext, its not, the real .ktext is inside, there is readme there.
 - My device id 0x10928086 was already in the file so I didn't have to edit the file

Working:

 - Native screen resolution 1440x900 - out of the box
 - KeyBoard - out of the box (depends on BIOS setting see above)
 - TouchPad - out of the box (depends on BIOS setting see above)
 - Wireless Card
 - Ethernet Card
 - Sound Output
 - USB - out of the box, I made no changes
 - DVD burner works, I have burnt successfully

Not Working:

 - PC Card
 - Memory card slots
 - Microphone show up as 'unrecognized' haven't been able to use it.

Also working:

 - QE/CI out of the box
 - Parallels work flawlessly and I have another XP system running under Parallels

Additional notes: Getting Vista and OS X to dual boot took a couple of times re-writing the MBR and when I let Vista repair itself and set the Active partition to OS X, my boot became sane.

Upgrade Notes:

10.4.9 is working great without any new issues.

Hewlett-Packard

Pavilion dv1000/dv1440 US

Specific build is HP Pvilion dv1440 US

  • Intel Pentium M 2.0 GHz SSE2, 1 GB Ram, 100 GB HD
  • Installed with JaS 10.4.6 Install. Deleted 4 "GMA950" kexts and repaired disk permissions to get FULL QE/CI ENABLED, also used staples to bridge pins 1-6 & 2-12.
  • Intel/PRO Wireless 2200b/g Mini PCI still not functioning.
  • Ethernet port functions just fine
  • Bluetooth works great
  • Volume keys on QuickPlay bar work great
  • Everything works great except screen (works after patching) and Card Reader and Wireless (with Intel 2200b/g)

How to solve the screen resolution problem on dv1440 US (JaS 10.4.8)

This tips may apply to you if your laptop monitor is not working and you have to rely on an external monitor.

I found that the OS X does something abnormal on the screen resolution when you try to output the image to the external monitor, i.e., pressing the "Fn" + the special key. I mainly experience this problem in two places: The first time setup and the first login to the system.

The installation works great until it hits the first time setup. The resolution looks weired on both laptop screen and external monitor. The bottom part of the screen seems being chopped and can't be displayed at all. To solve this problem, I enable the text-to-speech by pressing the apple key+F5(I do this by using an Apple USB keyboard). Note that you can't use the mouse here because the cursor you see on the screen and the actual cursor position are out of sync. Then I can tab into different field to hear and select the option. After the first time setup, the resolution will become normal again.

After you login to the OS X, you can only see a blank screen on your monitor because all of the main activities are displayed on the laptop monitor. You will need to go to the System preference --> Display --> Arrangement to enable the "Mirror Display" option. Again, you need to output the "main screen VGA signal" to the external display by using the "Fn" key. Then I enable the text-to-speech option by pressing the apple key + F5 button. At this point, you can use the keyboard to jump from the main partition to the applications --> system preference --> Display --> Arrangement and enable the Mirror Display option. After that, you can select the correct resolution and the resolution will work fine.

To upgrade to 10.4.9 safely, install 10.4.8 with at least the options stated above, then apply 10.4.9 on the first boot before you install anything else, then reboot.

To upgrade to 10.4.10, do it right after you upgrade to 10.4.9 (no need to reboot) but before you install anything else, then reboot.

  • As of July 9th, 2007, 10.4.10 kernel version 8.10.1 is a binary hacked kernel (vs. compiled from open source) and it lacks SpeedStep support. I suggest you leave it at 10.4.9 until a new kernel shows up, unless you don't care about power management (eg. desktop).

In case you cannot bare to do a clean install (at your own risk):

  • Backup your current kexts, especially your hand installed/tuned ones
  • Install the next version and backup all it's kexts and see next paragraph about crashes
  • Repeat procedure until a running system of the desired version is running; keep kexts from each version for at least 2 to 4 weeks; some claim to have had success upgrading directly to 10.4.10

If it crashes on startup

  • Press F8 on boot, enter "-v" and watch carefully the last messages for errors
  • Reboot, press F8, enter "-s" and try to replace new kexts with old kexts according to the errors you get (i.e. be smart, if your last "message" was a black screen, it's probably video)
  • If "-s" mode doesn't boot either (very unlikely, unless your disk's messed up), here's some options:
    • Access it from the install DVD
    • Boot from a live Linux CD, install hfsplus and force mount your Mac OS X partition for read-write (at your own risk) to replace files
    • Try to boot your Mac OS X partition with vmware

    • By connecting the 6 and 12 pins on the external VGA
      • Note: Make sure that your wire makes good contact. This should allow you to boot successfully to OSX without an external monitor EVERYTIME!!
    • Also has native resolution (1280x800)
  • Graphics (Quartz Extreme [QE] and CoreImage [CI])
    • Fixed by downloading special .kext files (I can't find the website where I got these, if I can find it again, I will update)
    • Note: If you mess up something when you edit your .kext files and you get the funky colors when you try to boot OSX, don't panic! Simply boot OSX in safe mode (press F8 to get to advanced start up options, then type "-x"), and you should be able to see your desktop. Now you can replace the modified .kext files with the original (You did keep the originals right? Always, always make backups, NEVER replace system files!)

--Other Helpful Hints--

  • Whenever you update or edit your system files, be sure to remember to repair your privileges. This will also improve your overall system performance, even after a fresh install.
    • This can be done through Disk Utility; there is an option to repair privileges. After clicking, wait for it to finish, and then restart.
  • Always, always make a backup of all your system files before you update or edit them.
    • To keep mine straight, I make a new folder for them and add "original" or "mod" in the file name.

Graphics are working (without acceleration) using MacVidia's 1.0.8 driver. (1440x900x32 resolution)

Sound working after updating the AppleAzaliaAudio.kext with the vendor id/dev ID. (ID: 0x504714F1) I also had to remove the HDA kext for this to work.

For the network card, I edited the IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleIntel8225x.kext and added the dev id. (ID: 0x10928086)

Was able to use the USB ports after I followed the directions and downloaded the Generic EHCI USB kext from this thread.

Firewire is working.

- JaA 10.4.8 SSE2/3 Intel/AMD (SSE2 Kernel) - Intel Pentium 4 M 2 GHz 512 cache - 70GB 4200rpm IDE laptop hardrive - 1024MB RAM

It works for the most part, if you know what you're doing. I picked out the SSE2 kernel and ran it with other patches, such as laptop power management, loginwindow patch to fix "About this Mac", I put on all the sound drivers on (it's a little glitchy), and did nothing about the video, because I didn't want to ruin something that works so beautifully out of the box. The ethernet didn't work, with the provided kexts, but my usb wifi dongle works great. I recommend that you don't update it, and you just browse the Internet with Firefox 3.6.19 (they're still making security updates), and when that's done with, Camino is great too!

  • CPU : Celeron M 410 (1.46Ghz)
  • Graphic Card : VIA/S3G Unichrome (1280x800x32)
As far as I know, there is no specific driver available. Without any configuration modifications it boots
with the resolution 1024x768x32 (streched to fit the widescreen display).
To use an other resolution is necessary to pass it to kernel as a parameter.
You should pass this to the kernel: "Graphics Mode"="1280x800x32"
To pass this parameter automatically everytime you boot, edit
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist and put it in Kernel Flags.
 It should look like this:
   <key>Kernel Flags</key>
   <string>"Graphics Mode"="1280x800x32"</string>
Because of the lack of a propper video driver, you can't watch a DVD for example.

 Driver: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=1&Level=6&Conn=5&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false&Downloads=true#367
If the OS in BIOS isn't set to "Other" (if it's set to WinXp), the card is disabled in boot and the driver isn't loaded.
  • PowerManagement: works
 * You should select the driver to laptop power management in most common hardware section of the installer.
 * It detects if you are using the battery or ac, shows the percentage of battery remaining and if you are
 charging the battery or not.
 * I couldn't make it shut down the display using the keyboard button, only closing it.
 * It does some thing when you tell it to go into sleep mode, but the display is still on and I don't know
exactly what it turns off, what it leaves on and if the power comsumption is acctually reduced.
  • Sound output: working badly with AC97 driver
  • Sound input: Mac OS X shows in Preferences that it is receiving the sound from the embedded microphone, but I didn't tested the quality yet.

Vaio VGN SZ series

-Installer: Jas.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.sse2.sse3 with v1 ppf patch

-CPU: Intel Pentium Core 2 Duo 1.67Ghz, Core Duo 1.83GHz (VGN-SZ120P) both cores recognized.
-Video (Stamina): Intel GMA950 Video works. Core Image & Quartz Extreme are supported with JAS GMA950 patch. In the Sony Vaio BIOS, set the laptop display area to extend the screen to get 1280x800 resolution in OS X. Otherwise, your maximum resolution will be 1024x768 (not centered) and there will be black to the right of your screen and a white bar across the bottom. 64MB recognized.
-Video (Speed): nVidia GeForce Go 7400 brings up a black screen when using Titan, although the desktop loads and computer is running under the black screen. Natit hangs during boot. Connect a second monitor to the VGA output and once in OSX, that monitor will have full, multiple resolution support (tested with Westinghouse 37" 1920x1080, 32-bit), while laptop screen will remain black. CI & QE work. 64MB recognized.
-DVD-Writer: DVD Burning not tried yet (will test soon), but "About This Mac" reports all functions supported, e.g. DVD+/-RW, DL etc. DVDs play back perfectly (GMA950), but fast-moving objects have interlacing artifacts (lines). Enabling "de-interlacing" option causes slight blockiness.
-Sound: Works. Sound quality is perfect in iTunes, DVDs, and MIDIs play nicely. Occasional tiny pop during boot. Must edit kext file with properly identified vendor/device ID (use Windows to identify). http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=32859&st=1020&p=294823
-Ethernet: Works. Must edit kext file with properly identified vendor/device ID (use Windows to identify). http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=28680
-Wi-Fi: Intel WM3945ABG does not work. Dell 1390 WLAN mini-PCIe internal card (~$13 on eBay) confirmed to work! Works on XP side too (Dell Drivers Here), but you can no longer turn off Bluetooth separately from WiFi. http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=13522
-Bluetooth: Works natively.
-56k Modem: Not recognized.
-USB: Works Natively. Full USB 2.0 speeds
-Firewire/iLink: Works natively.
-PCCard (PCMCIA) Slot: Does not work out of the box. About this Mac says, "No information found."
-ExpressCard34 Slot: Works natively. The Sony-provided card reader (VGP-MCA20 seen as UMH-U09 under USB) works great. Tested with SD card.
-Touchpad: Tapping/Dragging can be added with phb's release, but pointer speed must be turned down to minimum or it's too erratic. Dragging can't be disabled without also turning off tapping. Scrolling support shaky. http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=5419&st=80&p=54090
-FingerPrint Scanner: Recognized. Appears in USB devices as Biometric Co-Processor. Not sure if it does anything.
-Battery icon: Works with hack. http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=14912
-Webcam: Does not appear to be recognized.
-Dual-booting with XP: I have to press F8 after BIOS screen to get the Darwin loader to appear to choose the XP partition, otherwise OSX boots; in under 20 seconds, I might add!
-SATA: Works, but about 20MB/sec. using WinBench 1.3 (XP gets 35MB/sec. on HDTach), dragged down overall score to 79, but all others aspects of laptop were over 100.
-Sleep: Like most laptops, prevent this laptop from entering sleep mode. The only way to wake it up is to restart.
-Power Management: The power management does not appear to be working. Icon reports 2:30 on a full charge in "Stamina" mode but it does not seem to last t hat long. I get 4 hours in XP. Too bad no screen dimming option.
-Applications: All applications work perfectly. Firefox 2.0, iTunes (updated), Photoshop CS, Quark Express, Open Office (w/X11), ACDSee 1.6.5.
-Memory Stick Card Reader: Does not work.

Now, it's nearly the perfect MACINTOSHIBA for OSX86. Looking for a solution for wifi card (purchasing an Atheros card?). The rest of the devices work pretty good! To be continued... The best way to dual boot is installing first XP in the second partition, then OSX86 in the first one. And that's all. The darwin boot loader will do the rest for you

What does NOT work: WIFI, Audio Input/Output (Speakers work), MODEM, PCMCIA slot, S-Video -- DB15 VGA DOES work.

NOT TESTED: FireWire recognized but not tested, 5-1 Card Reader

IMOPRTANT!!! If you have installed the laptop power management bundle the cooling fan will not turn on when connected to AC power!

If you have this installed, briefly unplug the power after MacOS boots to start the cooling fan.

What Works After looking for kexts, the following devices work:

  • Realtek High Definition Audio
  • Realtek PCIe FE Family Ethernet Controller
  • USB

What doesn't Work The following devices don't work. (Maybe these devices work if I upgrade to 10.5 or 10.6???)

  • SB600 Chipset
  • Serial ATA Hard Drive. (Jas Installer won't display HD in Installation, and Disk Utility won't detect HD either. Had to install into my 8 GB SanDisk Cruiser flash drive, and booted off of that.)
  • ATI Radeon x1200 doesn't work. Resolution stuck at 1024x768. Had no luck using Callisto b008. (Anyone had any luck using Callisto on Radeon x1200?) QE/CI unsupported.
  • Atheros AR5007EG I'm trying to get to work. Unfortunately I used either a 10.5 or a 10.6 kext.
  • Also, Mac OS X thinks that its on battery power, even though I have it connected to AC power.
  • I haven't experimented if my PCMCIA slots work or not. Will try though.

it is working, but no sound no ethernet, no wifi, and no nothing but it works greatly. I haven't done anything with it yet so this is the bare system. I used the JaS.Mac.OS.X.10.4.8.AMD.Intel.SSE2.SSE3.PPF.1 system, and there was no problem during the instalisation. The system do not like the crazy keyboard of the notebook so I had to use US peyboard preference, instead of hungarian.
