HCL 10.5.1/Desktops

From OSx86

macOS 10.5.1
Hardware Compatibility

This is a hardware compatibility list ONLY for OEM desktop computers. We want to keep it as accurate as possible, but please, do not entirely rely on this list when buying a desktop. Don't forget to add how you got OSx86 running on your x86 desktop computer, and to use proper English. Please see the discussion page for proper instructions on how to input your system specs. Also, please contribute to the HCL 10.5.1 page, which should list a more granular view of compatibility. If your computer isn't listed, you should try it if you have a SSE2 or higher processor. Use vanilla kernel if it is supported.

  • ONLY add hardware that you have TESTED. Don't add hardware just because you think it might work.
  • Please add hardware into tables.
  • This is for 10.5.1 builds only.

Please list your computers in alphabetical order by manufacturer (Asus, Acer, Dell, HP, etc)

For how to edit the Wiki, please see this thread. Thank you!

Note: Please add whether your device supports QE, Quartz Extreme, graphics. Try playing a movie with Quicktime Player.

[edit] Acer

[edit] Aspire AM5630 Q6600

  • Install Method: Must Do Aitkos-r2 with r3, Both Patches!! With no Hpet SSE3.
  • Need to do Disable APIC. (currently trying to find a work around. definitely for install)
  • BIOS sucks I Agree but do the no hpet sse3 kernel, remove the two kexts, and netkas smbios
  • Runs All four corse. type "sysctl machdep" to make sure
  • Onboard LAN works out of the box. But there is a driver to make it work bettter *shrugs*
  • Built in Media Reader works out of box
  • Firewire works out of the box.
  • Onboard video works but only 1024X768 res. Get a new card if 2400hd. I got an nvidia
  • Issue with System profiler I'm going to try the new appleSMBIOS. by netkas.
  • Audio works with y default. havn't played with to much else of it
  • Doesn't seem to be able to play off the shelf DVD movies, It might have some goddamned DRM craps built into the DVD drive. That was what I thought at first, the DRM. But turned once I replaced the ATI HD2400 pro with a PNY Geforce 7300 gt, got that going, it plays DVDs. :) However, if you see a " ?? 10960 " error like that, it's a Leopard bug, has nothing to do with the hack.
  • It might also because it's a Blue-Ray/HD DVD drive. Seems to burn fine tho. Will try to install an regular PATA DVD drive.
  • Don't buy this machine for OS X unless you are willing to put in a lot of work to get it going. ..
  • But it's worth it.

[edit] Dell Dimension 2400

Installed through iATKOS10.5.1 Install. Stock Motherboard - No PCI Hardware - Removed Thermals and Powermanagement Kexts on install - added SSE2 patch on Install - Booted with Darwin.

[edit] Dimension 5150/E510

Install Method: Kalyway 10.5.1 (upgraded to Kalyway 10.5.2 Combo) - Processor: P4 BIOS A07

  • Audio: Sigmatel 9220 (needed AppleHD patcher 1.15 with available Sigmatel 9220 codec dump)
  • LAN: Intel 100/VE (needed to add 0x27dc8086 to /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleIntel8255x.kext/Contents/Info.plist)
(above fix for LAN only works after update to 10.5.2)
  • SATA HD works. IDE DVD works fine
  • Graphics ATI X300 (needed Callisto 008 with DVI output, CI Software, QE Not Supported)
  • Replaced graphics with geForce 7300 LE PCI-e (NVinject 0.2.1 CL/QE OK, no graphics lag after 9.2.0 universal kernel and the stock 10.5.2 system kext update)
  • How to install: Simple install with GUID partition scheme & PC_EFI GUID bootloader, no other options chosen during install!! (all adjusted post-install)

Installed using Kalyway 10.5.1. and applied Kalyway 10.5.2 Combo+Kernel update

Processor: Pentium 4 HT 3.00Ghz,2MB L2, BIOS A07, 2GB RAM
Chipset: Intel 945G Express
Audio: Sigmatel 9220 (used method above to make it work)
LAN: Intel PRO/100 VE (used method above to make it work)
Video: NVidia 7600GT (used NVinject newest patch) works perfectly in dual display mode
SATA/IDE drives work fine.
Printer: HP OfficejetPro L7680 (used manufacturer's OSX drivers)

--- During installation I unchecked all options under Customize (previously checked options made constant crashes while booting Leopard). Biggest problem was making it boot from HD. Made the partition active using fdisk in Setup Terminal window and ran Leopard using this [1] method to avoid repeating welcome video issue. Afterwards, everything was fine.

[edit] Dimension 9100

  • Install Method: Kalyway
  • EFI v8 (would not boot w/ Vanilla)
  • Audio patched with AppleHDA Patch v1.20
  • Onboard LAN working with patch
  • SATA II worked
  • GeForce 8600GT XXX with NVinject
  • Now running 10.5.2 Kalyway ComboUpdate w/ new kernel
  • Everything is working great. Only problem is Time Machine shows error: "Volume not found" and will not work. Every other program I have installed or used works great.

[edit] Dimension 3000

  • Install Method: Kalyway

[edit] Dimension 3100/E310

  • Install Method: Kalyway -- found HERE
  • Used GUID^^ and when customizing the install I selected SSE2 and GUID only. The vanilla kernels don't work.

^^ This person must have an E310 because GUID on my 3100 gave me b0 error, so if you have a 3100 USE MBR. Also, remember to NEVER select both!!

^^ The E310 also requires MBR, or at least mine did, so I'd use MBR regardless, 3100 or E310.

^Updated working link HERE

^*Great! This codec dump works great for SigmaTel 9200!!!

[edit] Dimension 8400

  • Install method: Kalyway
  • Everything works out of box. (Replaced graphics, x300SE not yet functioning well in Leopard) .

[edit] Dimension 8400

  • Installed iATKOS 10.5.1 v2, used Darwine boot loader
  • Replaced video card with a 7300GT
  • Installed a Realtek 8139 100/10 PCI card

The system is very stable, runs photoshop extended, iLife and iWork great. Very easy install with no hang ups. G.M. .

  • The default card in this system is a Broadcom 57xx. There are drivers for this card, but for some reason it does not detect the hardware MAC address. Thus after the install, you will see the card, but will not be able to get an IP address from DHCP. To resolve this, boot into windows, then open a Command Prompt Shell. Type "ipconfig /all" for the network adapter, you will see a string of hex digits in the form

Write this down, this is the hardware address for your card. Then boot into Leopard, open a terminal shell, and type the following: "ifconfig en0 ether XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX" using the value you got above in windows. At that point, you will be all set.

[edit] Optiplex 170L

  • Install Method: Kalyway
  • Audio & Video works .

Second User

  • Install Method: Kalyway/GUID/hacked kernel
  • Vanilla kernel does not work
  • Processor: P4 2.8 GHz
  • Graphics: PNY GeForce 5200FX dual vga with NVInject 0.2.0; edit NVCAP for dual-screen functionality. Have not tried onboard Intel graphics, but they did not give QE/CI acceleration under 10.4.8
  • QE/CI: yes/yes
  • Audio: Soundmax AC97 works out of the box, but need to edit multichannel options in Audio Midi Setup. Cannot adjust system volume but can change volume in individual programs such as iTunes
  • LAN: Intel 10/100VE works out of the box, but sometimes need to startup with boot flag -f if system reports ethernet cable not plugged in
  • SATA: yes, detected on install and system is installed to 500GB SATA drive.
  • iMovie quits on start; iTunes visualizations broken; other than that, all is well. Good enough to use as my primary.

[edit] Optiplex GX 270

  • Install Method: Kalyway & GUID Partition
  • Audio & LAN working out of the box
  • Nvidia FX5200 AGPx8 works with NVInject from DVD with QE/CI

Second user

  • Install Method: Kalyway

Does not work until now. Problem: Endless rebooting on install. This may be caused by the IDE controller. I tried 2 GX270 in the smallest casing, both slightly different (2,4 Ghz P4 SSE2, 2,6 Ghz SSE2 + HT), Both work fine with the 10.4.8 version. I tried also the medium sized Gx280. Result: the install DVD boots and runs leopard installer without the endless reboot (But I could not do a full install due to the lack of a spare S-ATA drive). Preliminary conclusion: The other users succesfull install on a GX270 could be because a S-ATA drive is used instead of the P-ATA drive in my case. Or the IDE controllers in the GX280 and GX270 are different (but then I can not explain that my Kalyway DVD does not run).

[edit] Optiplex GX 270

  • Install Method: iATKOS, MBR w/ Darwin bootloader
  • Audio & LAN working out of the box
  • Onboard 865G Video has CI but no QE G.M.

[edit] Optiplex GX 270

  • Install Method: iATKOS, MBR w/ Darwin bootloader
  • Everything (Audio, Sleep etc) EXCEPT Onboard LAN is working out of the box
  • NVidia FX5200 works perfectly with full CI/QE
  • For full install instructions check: iATKOS Leopard on a Dell Optiplex GX270 | i <3 the tubes .
  • Onboard LAN is unavailable and causes kernel panics due to the model. It is a Intel PRO/1000 GT which is not supported as of yet on any distro.

[edit] Optiplex GX280

  • GX280 in clamshell case w/ 3.2Ghz P4 HT CPU

  • Install Method: KALYWAY_LEO_10.5.1intel_SSE2_SSE3
  • Board: Intel 945G
  • Chipset: Intel 945G
  • Processor: Intel Pentium D 2.8Ghz
  • Vanilla kernel does NOT work
  • Video: Onboard GMA950 -- works fine, after software update max resolution fell to 1024x768 (bummer)
  • Audio: Onboard -- Works out of the box
  • LAN: Onboard Broadcom NetXtreme BCM5751 -- requires AppleBCM5751Ethernet.kext & configuration of MAC address at every boot to work
  • WIFI LAN: DLink DWL-520 (Seen as Atheros: 168c,3a13) requires patching IO80211Family.kext to work. Sometimes hangs the computer uppon connecting to a network.
  • SATA: works fine

[edit] Optiplex GX620 SFF

Person 2:

  • Install Method: KALYWAY_LEO_10.5.1intel_SSE2_SSE3
  • Board: Intel 945G
  • Chipset: Intel 945G
  • Processor: Intel Pentium 4 HT 3Ghz
  • Vanilla kernel does NOT work
  • Video: Onboard GMA950 -- works perfectly... have not performed software upgrade to 10.5.5 yet. EDIT: after upgrade to 10.5.7 video resolution is stuck at 1024X768. After spending 15+ hours with the kind people of the osx86 IRC I have found that there is no solution.
  • Audio: Onboard -- Works out of the box. EDIT: After upgrade to 10.5.7 it no longer works perfectly, you cannot adjust volume using slider in top right.
  • LAN: Onboard Broadcom NetXtreme BCM5751 -- works perfectly. If installing on 2 computers in the same network then they will assume the same IP address and neither connection will work. You would have to manually set of the Mac's IP's using network utility.
  • SATA: works perfectly

[edit] Precision 390

  • Install Method: iATKOS v1.0 r2
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo (1.86ghz)
  • Ram: 1gb 667 Dual Channel
  • 2x 320 Western Digital SATA II 7200 rpm 8mb Cache Hard Drives
  • Video: MSI nVidia 7300LE 256mb PCIe 16 (bought from newegg.com for less than $30)
  • Audio: Doesn't work, tried multiple patches, has Sigmatel 92xx C Major HD
  • LAN: Onboard doesn't work, used compatible LAN instead (Encore gigabit LAN, from newegg.com, less than $10)
  • For dual boot with XP Pro I turned off second SATA port and installed XP on first HD, then turned that one off and turned on 2nd hard drive and set it as boot drive in BIOS and

installed OS X Leopard 10.5.1 and rebooted and went into bios and turned first hard drive back on and booted into XP and put iATKOS disc back in and copied Chai0 to C:\ and edited boot.ini last entry to say C:\Chain0="OS X Leopard". Dual boot works perfect. Also didn't install any of the patches from the iATKOS disc and Video and LAN worked perfectly. Changed sleep mode in OS X because system would hang if it went to sleep, turned off. .

  • Reboot and boot once again with tohkernel and fill in the question, create account
  • edit the boot.plist to boot with the tohkernel by default
  • patch the AppleSMBios.kext because after install the 'About this Mac' causes a problem

System scored 80+ in MacBench on CPU&Memory

  • RAM: 2GB
  • On-board Audio: not working out of the box. Have not tried AppleHDA patch as I'm using an external USB Creative Extigy sound card which is working perfectly out of the box.
  • Video: Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 3100 is working: no QE/CI, change resolution with "Graphics Mode" => "1280x1024" max, which is not great on the wide LCD which prefers 1680x1050. Also the screen resolution ratio is not good and pictures are distorted. Just received the PNY GeForce 8400Gs 256MB Verto: Punk92 Installer is working with all resolutions but no QE/CI.
  • LAN: Onboard network does NOT work. Belkin F5D8053 USB with drivers found here
