This is a component level hardware compatibility list. We want to keep it as accurate as possible, but please, do not entirely rely on this list when buying hardware. Add which parts you have working in the categories listed below, or create a new category. Please keep alphabetical order inside the categories. The categories themselves are ordered by popularity. Please list any caveats or problems as well.

Intel® P35 + ICH9R
|
System Configuration:
- Model Name: Mac Pro
- Model Identifier: Mac Pro 3,1
- CPU: Intel Core2Duo 3Ghz E8400
- GPU: nVidia G210 1gb Dual VGA/DVI
- RAM: 8gb DDR3 1333
- Audio: Intel HD Audio Built-in ALC870 [same as ALC889a]
- Ethernet: Onboard Realtek RTL8111/8168B [10ec:8168]
Component Status:
- Audio works using MultiBeast ALC8xxHDA & AppleHDA Rollback & ALC885/889a Non-DSDT HDAEnabler [1]
- Ethernet works with kext [2], however I could not get this to work as Built-in Ethernet which is required for App Store and iCloud to operate correctly. I had to add a separate Network Card (RTL8139 in this case) which was detected as Built-in Ethernet. I actually use the onboard network card as I have found the RTL8139 to be a bit flaky at times but, without it installed, I could not use App Store etc.
- Graphics card works with NVEnabler64 [3]
iAtkos L2 Installation Guide:
- First, the BIOS of the motherboard needed to be updated 1.40 to add support for the E8400 processor.
- Enter the BIOS and make sure that SATA mode is set to AHCI. No other settings were required.
- Insert DVD, let boot. Will take 5-15 minutes to come up. Use Disk Utility to prep your partition for install.
- Proceed. Select the partition you just got ready, then hit Install. I did not choose any non-standard options, nor Graphics Enabler.
- After install and reboot, you'll see the next setup screens (time zone select, etc). Proceed and you should be at desktop.
- Install your Graphics, Audio and Network kexts as linked above. [4]
- Download Champlist [5]
- In Champlist, choose Configuration and select: Use Kernel Cache, Ethernet Built In, Hide 'boot', Restart Fix, PCIRoot=1. Save this, it will modify the org.chameleon.Boot.plist in the /Extra folder at the root of your Mac drive.
- Then select SMBios, select MacPro3,1 and use Serial Generator to choose CPU as the MacPro3,1 from the 2008 section. Save this to your /Extra folder at the root of your Mac drive.
- Reboot and you should be in action. I was able to update to 10.7.3 no problem using Software Update, as well as all other updates that were available.

Z68 Extreme4 Gen3

Intel Z68
|
UPGRADED TO 10.8.3 WITH 100% SUCCESS AND MORE STABILITY. BELOW HAS DEPRECIATED.
System Configuration:
- Model Name: Mac Pro
- Model Identifier: Mac Pro 3,1
- CPU: Intel i5-2500
- GPU: Nvidia GTS 250 1gb (Intel onboard doesn't work, see notes)
Component Status:
- Audio works with kext
- Ethernet works with kext [6]
- DSDT precompiled just for this mobo [7]
- Only Sleep does not work
Installed with 2 methods, both work 100%: iAtkos L2
iAtkos L2 Installation Guide:
- Insert DVD, let boot. Will take 5-15 minutes to come up. Use Disk Utility to prep your partition for install.
- Proceed. Select the partition you just got ready, then hit Customize.
- After install and reboot, you'll see the next setup screens (time zone select, etc). Proceed and you should be at desktop.
- Install your Audio and Network kexts as linked above.
- You should be fairly setup now.
Installation Guide:
- Approx the same as iAtkos. Only difference is, when you get to setup phase two (after reboot) if everything is going very slow, you'll need to (if you can) load your drive as slave onto a real Mac or another mackintosh.
- Guide: This guy helped me get things working great (except sleep).
- DSDT: Use the DSDT file I linked earlier.
- SMBIOS: Do not change the SMBIOS from what is default installed. It should be MacPro3,1 by default. If you try updating it to MacPro5,1 like I did, your Mac will stop booting and you'll have to start over (or clone from a backup like I did)
- Cloning: Speaking of which, once you get to your desktop, I highly recommend making a clone to another partition/USB drive of your hard work so far. I had to reclone 4 times during the process from making mistakes, and my clone image saved me many hours. Use CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) or your favorite app.
- Booting: Make sure you are using Chimera v1.7.0 (or higher) for your bootloder instead of Chameleon. Chimera is a fork and is required for your mobo.
- Networking: After installing the networking kext provided earlier, you want to make sure you *COPY* (not move) it in /System/Library/Extensions/ but to do so you'll need to delete the one thats already there first (cannot overwrite) then copy in, then use KextUtility to rebuild caches. Then reboot. If it works after reboot, keep that extra copy nearby. You may have to reinstall it once more at some point (like on an update to 10.7.4) as Apple overwrites them again. For the same reason, keep your audio and other custom kexts too.
- Graphics: Intel Integrated Graphics does not work on setup. I was able to install with iAtkos methods just fine with integrated graphics (no graphics card), but after reboot before setup phase two (time zone select, etc) my system just hung at a big off-white screen with Apple logo in the center. I could move the mouse but never did anything. But as soon as I installed a graphics card (for me, Nvidia GTS 250 from my old build) it worked like a charm right away. I think having GraphicsEnabler in chameleon.plist helped but it may be stock with Apple now. You'll need to handle your own graphics card situation. PS- I never tried the Integrated Graphics again after doing setup because I decided to keep my old graphics card afterall.

1. Format USB key (min. 8GB) with disk utility (use the option Master Boot Record)
2. Put you OSX Lion image in your OSX app folder (I did this with 10.7.2. and upgraded to 10.7.3 => step 6 / I think you could start with a clean 10.7.3. image as well, but not tested)
3. Run Chimera (download from and install it on the USB key
4. Boot from USB and choose install OSX on your disk (format with disk utility the boot disk as Mac OSX extended journaled with option GUID partition table)
5. Run Chimera with the following items checked:
- system utilities => repair permissions
- audio: - Realtek ACL8xxHDA - AppleHDA Rollback - Non-DSDT HDAEnabler - ALC889
- disk: - 3rdParty SATA - 3rdParty eSATA - Trim Enabler
- Miscellaneous: - FakeSMC - FakeSMC Plugins - Mohterboard plugins - AMD Radeon Plugin - USB 3.0 - NEC/Renesas and Etron
- Network: - hnak's AppleIntelE1000E Ethernet
- Bootloaders: - Chimera v1.7.0 r1394

System:
- Chipset: (Northbridge & Southbridge)Intel® P45 / ICH10 with Intel® Fast Memory Access Technology
- Lan: Realtek Gigabit Lan (detected as RealtekRTL81xx)
- HDD: Seagate Barracuda Green ST1500DL003 1.5TB
- Optical:Optiarc DVD RW AD-7240S
- Shut down: Great!
- Restart: Perfect!
- Sleep: Kills the system and it won't start back up ever again. So I disabled sleep.
|
- Install Method:snow leopard retail. Then made my own USB drive using chimera and the "Install Lion App" from the app store. Then updated from software update to 10.7.3
- BIOS Version: P5Q SE Plus Rev. 2202 hacked to run all os (This was done previously to install Leopard, it allowed SL and Lion both to run as long as I didn't install an AML! Installing the AML with a hacked bios causes the system to break!)
- Audio: VIA VT 1708s I used appleHDA for via vt 1708s. This works technically, but it doesn't detect any sound has been installed. Also the volume slider in the menu bar doesn't work. (except to mute or full volume) Also I have the front mic and speaker ports working. The SPDIF is listed in sound settings, but I don't know if they actually work. "Line in Blue rear" is listed, but doesn't work same with "Line out Black rear"
- LAN: Model, Realtek Gigabit LAN controller featuring AI NET 2: Works OOB.
- SATA & IDE: As Per usual, make sure to set SATA as AHCI otherwise they won't be seen by the OS. The Seagate Barracuda required me to install a boot1h file to the root of the drive in order to make it bootable. It works great now.
- Optical Drive: AD-7240S seems to be working great. Faceplate button doesn't work to eject as disk while in OSX, but can be ejected easily from the GUI.
Does PC-EFI and/or the Vanilla Kernel work on your system? Darwin 11.3.0 (I think this means Vanilla)
Does everything work without patching? Only sound needed patching

- Updated to 10.7.3 using combo update, not through Software Update (don't know if this is necessary)
- Copied /Extra folder from UniBeast flash drive to root directory (this copies PCIRootUID=1 in Boot.plist, be sure to remove)
- Hardware Monitor works great with temperature sensors!
|
What works/How:
- Install Method: UniBeast w/App Store Lion
- Audio: Realtek ALC889 VoodooHDA (to get rid of noise, turn Input Gain to 0)
- LAN: Realtek 8111DL: Used RealtekR1000SL.kext
- SATA & IDE: Haven't tested IDE, but SATA works 100%.
- Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS324 SATA works 100%.
- Shutdown, Reboot work but haven't tested sleep.
- npci=0x2000 GraphicsEnabler=Yes
- NOTE: Make sure to remove PCIRootUID=1 in org.chameleon.Boot.plist if it is there!
