ONLY add hardware which you have TESTED. Don't add hardware just because you think it might work. Please format all comments nicely; don't inject your results into paragraphs.
This is a component level hardware compatibility list. We want to keep it as accurate as possible but please do not entirely rely on this list when buying hardware. Add which parts you have working in the categories listed below, or create a new category. Please keep alphabetical order inside the categories. The categories itself are ordered by popularity.
Please list any caveats or problems as well.

For a list of working PCs, check the HCL. If your hardware doesn't work, put it in the Incompatible hardware list.

This is for 10.4.1 builds only

Compatible Hardware

Also check the System Extensions available in x86 Tiger.

Accelerated graphic cards

If you get an ATI or nVidia card running with acceleration, please write a Howto and link it to your card record.

  • Integrated i915G Intel GMA900 - all resolutions - works with QE, Core-Graphics/Image/Video (2D and 3D) (sony vaio fs550 - only 1024x768x32 - no QE no Core) :(
  • Integrated i945G Intel GMA950 - all resolutions QE + CI. Need to edit 915 kexts to have your 945 Info.
  • Integrated 82865G (device id 8086 2572 - match 0x25728086) - all resolutions - works with QE, Core-Graphics/Image/Video (2D and 3D). Not all versions, though (HP d530 works, IBM desktop doesn't), it's about luck
  • Silicon Image Orion ADD2-N Dual Pad x16 PCI-Express (DVI-AddOn card for i915G onboard chipset, made for HP p/n: DY674A-Full size bracket; DY673A-Low profile bracket)
  • Silicon Image Orion ADD2-N Dual Pad x16 PCI-Express (DVI-AddOn card for i915G onboard chipset, made for Dell p/n: J4570-Full size bracket; J4571-Low profile bracket) Note: These Dell cards are apparently identical to the equivalent HP cards listed above, but are often available at a much lower price; they provide DVI output from the onboard GMA900 video at resolutions thru 1920 by 1200 @ 60HZ.

VESA compatible unaccelerated cards

  • Try to set "Graphics Mode"="WidthxHeightxDept.", ex: "GraphicsMode"="1280x1024x32"
  • If Darwin detects VESA 3.0 you can set the refresh rate: "GraphicsMode"="[email protected]"
  • The Tips and Tricks page has a tip for making Graphics Mode settings permanent.

* Please visit ATI Drivers for progress on loading the ATI driver set. * Download the Ati drivers form this link http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=678

  • All-In-Wonder Radeon (Original) - Delete all ATI* drivers to get to work.
  • Radeon IGP 340M - No QE, No CoreImage, VESA 2.0, 1024x768 at 60Hz
  • Radeon 7000 - VESA 2.0 1024x768 (I got [email protected]). OpenGL works, no QE or Core Image.
  • Radeon 7200 - VESA 2.0 1280x1024x32.
  • Radeon 7500 - VESA 2.0 1024x768x32 @ 60 Hz. OpenGL works, no QE, no Core Image.
  • Radeon 7500 AIW - VESA 2.0 1024x768x32 @ 60 Hz. No OpenGL, no QE, no Core Image. Must remove all ATI extensions from system to make it work.
  • Radeon 8500 AIW - VESA 2.0 1280 @ 60 Hz
  • Radeon 8500LE - VESA 2.0 1280x1024 @ 60Hz
  • Radeon 9000/9200 Mobile - Vesa 3.0 1280 all resolutions worked for me, i'm running 1600x1200x32 but the monitor out doesnt work and a high resolution (i think it only outputs 800x600 at some weird rf rate) and no open gl or direct 3d, video works great tho, and the system looks gorgeous at 1600x1200x32 native.
  • Radeon 9000 Pro - VESA 2.0 - 1024x768 only, no QE
  • Radeon 9100 - VESA 2.0 - 60Hz only, no QE, no OpenGL
  • Radeon 9200 - VESA 2.0 - 1280x1024x32 no QE, or acceleration
  • Radeon 9200 SE - Graphics look garbled when menus move (no 2d acc?) 1 working resolution 1024x768x32 60hz (Worked great for me, even changed resolutions), install maxxus patch to fix
  • Radeon 9250 - No QE, No CoreImage, VESA 2.0, 1024x768 at 60Hz
  • Asus Radeon 9550 - Recognized as "16 MB. Radeon 9600Pro", No QE, No CI, VESA 2.0 [email protected] Hz
  • Radeon 9250 (PowerColor) - VESA 2.0, 1280x1024 at 60Hz
  • Radeon 9500 - The 9700 with the 4 pipelines disabled works fine for me
  • Radeon 9550 - No QE, No CoreImage, VESA 2.0, 1024x768 at 60Hz, 1280x1024 at 60 Hz
  • Sapphire Radeon 9550 (Recognized as 9600PRO) - VESA 2.0, 1024x768
  • Radeon 9600 AGP8x 256MB VRAM -No QE, No CI, Vesa 2.0 1024x768x32 at 60Hz, some glitches. Boot only in safe mode.
  • Radeon 9600 SE - No QE, No CoreImage, VESA 2.0 at 60Hz
  • Radeon 9600 Pro SE - VESA 2.0 at 60Hz, 1024, 1280, works with ATI extensions removed or -x (safemode)
  • Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro - No QE, VESA 2.0 1024x768x32 @ 60Hz. Deleted the Radeon9700.kext file and boots fine with -v -f. No safe mode!

Same for me but DO NOT DELETE the driver quoted, you would need to reinstall in some cases ! Just boot in safe mode with -x, works much better !

  • Radeon 9600XT - Vesa 2.0, 1280, 60Hz
  • Radeon 9600XT Asus AGP (PCI ID 5964) Vesa [email protected]
  • Radeon 9700 Pro AGP - Delete all ATI* files on extensions folder to avoid yellow death screen.
  • Radeon 9800SE AGP - Delete all ATI* files on extensions folder to avoid yellow death screen.
  • Radeon 9800Pro AGP - Delete all ATI* files on extensions folder or won't boot. Set resolution at darwin bootloader ("Graphics Mode"="1280x1024x32"). VESA 2.0
  • Radeon 9800XT AGP - VESA 2.0 [email protected]
  • Radeon 9800XL AGP - Delete ATI* files in System\Library\Extensions to be able to boot. No QE or acceleration.
  • ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 16MB DDR, VESA 2.0, 1024x768x24 by boot command
  • Radeon Mobility 9600 -Remove all ATI* files on extensions folder to avoid yellow death screen.
  • Radeon Mobility 9700 - Vesa 2.0. Delete all ATI* files on extensions folder to avoid yellow death screen.
  • Radeon Mobility 9800 - Vesa 2.0. Remove all ATI*.kext in /System/Library/Extensions.
  • Radeon Mobility FireGL T2 - Bootloader sees card as Mobility 9700 w/ 128mb VRam, behaves just like Mobility 9700. Reason for drivers not loading correctly is that the AGP-PCI bridge driver doesn't load. You must find the VID and DID of your Bridge driver and add it to AppleI386PCI.kext for the ATI driver to load. Problem is that even with the driver kext loading correctly my display comes up purple tinged and still not video accelerated, so more work is needed. [Addendum] Shows up as Radeon Mobility 9600 for me (maybe yours is a T2e?) and runs fine w/ VESA 2.0 at 1400x1050x32; horrible artifacting when loading ATI kext --> unusable.
  • Radeon Mobility X600 PCIe - VESA 2.0 stuck on 1024x768x32, no other options available. - I'm using it at 1400x1050x32.
  • Radeon Mobility X700 PCIe - VESA 3.0. Runs only at 1024x768 with 16MB, while specs say 1200x800 with 64MB.
  • Radeon VE 32MB PCI - VESA 2.0, works at 1024x768 at 60Hz
  • Radeon X300 (Inspiron 6000) - No QE but 2d acceleration works.
  • Radeon X300-SE PCIe - VESA 2.0 , stuck on 1024x768x32 (setting any other graphics mode causes 'frequency out of range') 2d works.
  • Radeon X550 PCIe - VESA 2.0, works at 1024x768 (works in 1280x1024 too, NOT manual refresh rate)
  • Sapphire X600 Pro (You have to delete all card drivers) - VESA 2.0 1024x768
  • Radeon X700-series PCIe - VESA 3.0 1600x1200 at 60Hz
  • Sapphire X700 Pro PCIe - VESA 3.0 1600x1200 at 60Hz

  • Radeon X800SE AGP - VESA 3.0 supported. Must remove all ATI extensions from system to make it work.

Although this doesn't belong here but some people insist on it:

The Apple Developer Platform mainboard is a custom made version of Intels D915GUX mainboard with Firewire (optional to the original D915GUX) and Intel 82562EZ NIC chipset (the variant D915GUXLK with Marvells 88E8050 NIC chipset does not have network support in osx). The onboard ALC860 Azalia (HD Audio) chipset is the same as in the devkit but doesn't work for me with osx. Jack sensing doesn't work on the devkit, jack reassign doesn't work too, microphone in doesn't work, headphone out doesn't work, only line in and line out work on the devkit. Power saving will not turn off the cpu fan. The kit is delivered with version 450 of Intels BIOS although Intel offers only version 444 for download, maybe 450 will be a non-public release for apple only.

Partially Working Motherboards

  • Gigabyte SIS-chipset S478 board (model escapes me) - problems as above. STAY AWAY FROM GIGABYTE FOR OSX86 boxes!!
  • Intel 845BG Desktop Board (6 PCI Slots) (IDE, USB, LAN, Sound all work; PS2 and VGA untested, USB Boot did not work)
  • K8T Neo-FIS2R (K8T800 IDE, LAN, Audio(left channel only) PATA&SATA Firewire and USB2)
  • Mach Speed Viper K8M8M - sound only works left channel.
  • Mach Speed Viper K8M8MS
  • Magic Pro MP-K8AM-G Pro (VGA, USB, Firewire, LAN, IDE works) (SATA, Audio NOT work)
  • Matsonic MS9107C+ Series - VIA P4X333
  • MSI K8T Master2 FAR (ATA,USB,NoLan,MonoSound) eMachines T1740 Motherboard (ATA, LAN, No USB, No Sound)
  • MSI K8MM-ILSR (MS-6741 1.0) ATA, USB OK, all work. AC'97 Audio doesn't work on right channel, No VIA-Rhine LAN, did not test onboard Firewire or onboard video, PS/2 Keyboard didn't work with several models. Seems stable and v. fast.
  • MSI PT 880 NEO (MS-7008 1.0) (ATA, SATA, LAN
  • Soyo 845PE ISA (AC97 audio does not work. Everything else including USB2.0 and on-board networking works, detected and works great.)
  • Soyo SY-P4VTE (No LAN)
  • Soyo SY-P4X400 DRAGON Lite (IDE, LAN, realtek 8139, USB, Audio doesn't function.)
  • Shuttle SB83G Barebones - Intel 915 chipset - Sound, Firewire, USB, PS/2, Graphics (Quartz Extreme, Core Image, & OpenGL work) & IDE works (PATA).SATA Untested. Network doesnt work.Internal Wireless Networking doesnt work (at the moment, although it is being worked on).DVI works at a full 1680 x 1050 on a 20" Apple Cinema Display (via ADC-DVI converter) using the Silicon Image Orion ADD2-N card (HP part #: DY674A)
  • Via P4PB 400 Everything but onboard Lan(Via Rhine III)/Audio(AC97) works.
  • Foxconn 915M07-G-8EKRS All work(QE/CG/LAN/SOUND)but 1394 doesn't
  • Intel D875PBZ - OSX is very unstable(5-10 minutes of running at most), can't boot OSX with any usb device plugged in. After it boots i plugg in the mouse. Used with GeForce FX5950Ultra Leadtek.
  • PCCHIPS - M957G Almost work(USB/Sound{mono-left} LAN doesn't work but cheap LAN card add-on PCI can work.did not test on bord Video.
  • WinFast NF4UK8AA-8EKRS - No sound or LAN

  • Handy for testing out all those different cards with a PC, or if your PCI slots are running out.
  • Avaya ORiNOCO PCI Adaptor
  • Tellus TWL-PCA PCI PCMCIA/PCCARD Adapter - Tested with a 2GB Toshiba PCCard Harddrive and a Toshiba 56k (A.K.A. Psion Gold) Modem and both were automatically recognised and worked fine. Could power cards down and switch between cards without having to reboot.
