Note: Because of the introduction of the Macintels, this list can also be used for hardware that you have tested with the new Macs! Just make sure that you let us know you're using it on an Apple machine.

This is a component level hardware compatibility list. We want to keep it as accurate as possible, but please, do not entirely rely on this list when buying hardware. Add which parts you have working in the categories listed below, or create a new category. Please keep alphabetical order inside the categories. The categories themselves are ordered by popularity. Please list any caveats or problems as well.

  • ONLY add hardware that you have TESTED. Don't add hardware just because you think it might work.
  • Please add hardware into tables.
  • This is for 10.4.6 builds only.

Graphics Cards

Please specify if your card is AGP, PCI or PCI-E.
Also, please try to differentiate chip and board manufacturer (i.e. "ATI / Sapphire" or "NVidia / Gainward").
Note: For NVidia users, visit http://macvidia.starchaser.org/ for updated drivers. For NVIDIA CARDS PLEASE SPECIFY IF THE CARD DOES QE/CI. Saying the macvidia drivers work but not specifying QE or CI is a bit misleading
Note: For ATI users, visit http://omni.starchaser.org/ for experimental drivers.
Note: As of right now, all ATI cards with working kexts have severe slowdown issues with nForce3 chipsets. There is no fix for this, save getting editting out your card from the kext or using Quartz Debug to shut off Quartz Extreme.
UPDATE: ATI Radeon 9600 working on nforce3 with QE and CI with no slowdown, only some little tearing that could be fixed, instructions here. This might work with other cards.

Hardware Name, [Bus] [(VRAM)] Chip-Manufacturer / [Board-Manufacturer] Notes QE / CI Resolution Full Work / No Patch
PowerColor X1600PRO 256MB PowerColor / ATI works with Borisbadenov method Driver @ http://www.installers.dl.am/ YES ANY Only DVI to VGA on one Monitor, anything else works fully
X1600Pro IceQ PCIe 256MB HIS Excalibur / ATI works with Borisbadenov method Driver @ http://www.installers.dl.am/ YES ANY with DVI support Yes / Borisbadenov Patch 3.2 for 10.4.6
ATI Radeon X600 256mb ATI 10.4.6 Goatse image works 1024x768 only out of box. Can get full resolution/refresh rate control panel with Callisto drivers, but must do QE/CI hack/trick to get QE/CI working again after callisto installation. World of Warcraft works perfectly after callisto installation / QE/CI patch/hack. See solutions in insanelymac forum to deal with mouse tearing. YES 1024x768 60hz QE/CI only out of box. Callisto driver needed for resolution/refresh rate control plus QE/CI hack needed to re-enable after callisto driver install. Only
PowerColor X1600XT256MB PowerColor / ATI This card works perfect, all I did was edit the ATINDRV.kext and replaced
"<string>ATY,Wormy</string> to this <string>display</string>"
<string>IONDRVDevice</string> to this <string>IOPCIDevice</string>
. After these changes I could choose any resolution in DISPLAY Preference, and I have full support for QE and CI
YES ANY just the one mentioned before
PowerColor X1600XT 256MB dual-DVI-D PCIe PowerColor / ATI Works with Borisbadenovmethod Driver @ http://www.installers.dl.am/ yielding QE/CI, full resolution support, refresh-rate selection, no mouse tearing, and screen rotation. Full-screen video at 1920x1200 is smooth, full 32-bit color appears to be present - this has been an issue on other cards. However, the card will only send output on the primary DVI-D port; if D-SUB is attempted in conjunction with DVI-D, output is only sent on D-SUB. Thus no dual-monitor support is possible with (at least) dual DVI or mixed DVI/D-SUB. I have not attempted dual D-SUB. YES ANY NO
MSI RX1600 TD256E 256mb ATI / PCI-E works with Borisbadenovmethod Driver @ http://www.installers.dl.am/
Full QE/Ci, able to change resolutions, refresh rates, no mouse tearing.
Yes Any Patch and 100%
ATI Radeon X1600 Pro 512mb ATI / AGP works with Borisbadenovmethod Driver @ http://www.installers.dl.am/
Full QE/Ci, able to change resolutions, refresh rates, no mouse tearing.
Yes Any Patch and 100%
HIS Radeon X1600XT IceQ Turbo 256MB ATI / PCI-E Recognized as VESA 3.0 with full QE/CI and Q2DE supported. Unable to change resolution or refresh rate, minimal mouse tearing that was corrected with mousepose. Used borisbadenov method installer, then ran the uninstall script and everything wored. Yes Any Patch and 100%
Radeon X1800XT PCIe 512MB ATI / ATI works with Borisbadenov patch, no DVI (have to use VGA adapter) Yes Any No, had to patch
Radeon X1800XT 256MB Sapphire / ATI Make sure to use version 3.2 of the Borisbadenov/NeoPheus drivers- v3.6 gives Resolution change but NO QE/CI. Drivers here->[1] Yes! (With v3.2) Any No
FireGL V5000 PCI-E ATI QE and CI supported after patch. 1024x768 resolution only in system prefs. See also http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=10415&hl=ati. With 10.4.4 Ext,Framw,GL files. Some mouse artifacts, fix it with mouse locator. Edit com.apple.Boot.plist to get resolutions other than 1024x768. Yes Tested with 1280x1024
Sapphire X1300XT 256MB Sapphire / ATI Full works: QE,CI,Rotating,Gamma and color adjustments, maybe multidisplay (i dont test it). Check: borisbadenov ATI X1000-series Solution, Full ATI Support with Apple Drivers (Post #820). Yes ANY Yes
Radeon X300SE ATI Supports QE/CI in any resolutions, with Callisto 008 and Koverg driver/patches, leaves mouse trails that can "patchsolve" with MouseLocator (Device ID = 5b60). However, under DVI-D, the full-screen video is very choppy with this card at high-resolution; Aperture is often sluggish when it animates (switching picks in a stack, etc.); the card *does not* support full 32-bit color, although it claims to under Display Preferences. Not a good choice if you're looking to purchase a new card for your system. Yes Any No
Radeon 9000 IGP ATI Works in 1024x768 with no patch and works with Omni Castillo driver version 003 (fails with 006) for higher resolutions No 1280x800 No

Radeon 9800Pro AGP ATI Working. Use Callisto (omni.starchaser.org) to enable Display options. QE/CI Working. Remember to edit AtiRadeon9700Ga.plugin when using Callisto to enable QE/CI. Moderate mouse tearing can be decreased with MouseLocator Yes 1280x1024 Needs Callsito to enable display adjustments in control panel. Has moderate mouse tearing
Radeon 9800 Pro AGP 128MB VRAM ATI Working on SSE2 (with SSE2 patches, DVD already patched). Didn't do anything special but limited to 1024x768x32. QE/CI Working. Also there is mouse tearing. Tried Callisto8+Koverg patch, which killed my installation. So go get higher resolution, I simply edited (see below) the com.apple.boot.plist file to add 1280x1024x32, which works beautifully!

Add to library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.boot.plist (sudo library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.boot.plist )

Radeon X800 Pro AGP ATI QE / CI enabled in JaS 10.4.6 using Callisto b006, modifying the appropriate ATIRadeon9700GA.plugin using the methods described in the Callisto package, by adding AGPGart and by (as odd as it sounds) replacing the following files on my OS X istall with their respective files found on the install CD: All ATI* kext files and the entire OpenGL.framework found in the SystemEssentials directory. Extraction completed using Pacifist. Finally Disk Utilities -> Permissions Repair was run. More info on the method I used HERE. Yes Any Method listed in descriptions gave me 100%!!!!
